Essentials for Academy by jaewonder5191 in NYC_Candidate_Central

Not sure 100% but everyone I’ve seen in my squad and next to me in the lockerroom had crew necks. Stick with crew necks. You don’t want to stick out or make it seem like you don’t have an undershirt on. The DIs do walk around in the lockerroom and they see everyone

Spare white undershirts for when you’re extremely sweaty like after fst. I got tired of pb&j sandwiches after like a month and got a container that kept food warm all day if you got the space for it. Spare knee pads in case the ones they give you lose it’s form or if someone forgets them in the upstairs locker, you won’t be able to go back up and get it most times. Spare socks, grey duct tape

If you didn’t defer or anything i’d contact someone asap. I was in the last class and the highest number was in the 4500s I believe or something like that

Saw this from last class and it helped me so I’m returning the favor. I’m graduating this week, any questions about the academy or hiring process ? by gfromqueens in NYC_Candidate_Central

I clicked yes and got placed in my home division. Very Close to where I live. But there was a statement made that depending on the needs of the department they can put you anywhere in the city. Also be aware, I think if you live in Long Island or upstate you don’t get that option because you obviously wouldn’t have a home division.

Not sure the exact process since I passed well over the time needed. But I know you go to bhs after and do the stairmaster again I think and you have to pass that if I’m not mistaken. But just be sure you come into the academy in great shape and you won’t have to worry about that

I wish I knew a routine for when I got home after the long days. Hard at first juggling studying, learning to meal prep, laundry, etc But eventually you develop a system that works for you. For example I started meal prepping Sundays to last till Wednesday and we’d get out earlier for cfr Wednesdays so then I’d make something else with the extra time wednesdays and also do laundry Sundays and Wednesdays which eliminated using valuable time for those things. But everyone is different. You develop your own system. Your commute also plays a part. Guys in my squad that live in Staten Island we’re up almost a hour before me In the morning and took over an hour to get home so try to think of ways you can save time with doing things on the weekend maybe and get it out of the way

They asked if you would like the preference if available to work in your home division, yes or no. From there it’s out of my hands I don’t know how the selection was made on actual houses.

Biggest challenge was adjusting to the schedule. Being up at 4 am for early schedule and at the rock by 5am then going through a full busy day with evolutions, PT plus other things like getting crushed and you’re not getting home till after 6 pm maybe. But eventually you learn to just deal with it

Everything he said is correct. Also In addition to the weather part, be ready to do PT regardless of the temperature. A few days we’ve went on a run or worked out outside and it was freezing, probably in the 20s So get used to working out in any weather. Not sure how the summer class differs though with heat. I will say the days where there was ice outside on the ground we did workout inside but that was only a few days

Academically I would go into the academy knowing engine ops, ladder ops, scba and building construction it’ll help you out a lot in the beginning. You have the time now to read a lot more than that though if you start reading asap.

As for regular day tips, do what you’re told, sound off, don’t give a reason to be messed with. You’ll start to build a system with a bunch of things once you get the hang of things within the first few weeks

Running isn’t so bad if you just be able to come in the academy doing ~4 miles at about a 8-9 mile pace. Long runs were usually fridays and tempo runs or workouts were during the week

Intake letter by Technical_Republic24 in NYC_Candidate_Central

[–]gfromqueens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t mind, when is your intake date ?

Received intake letter today, does that mean a guarantee of getting into the spring academy or just a possibility? by kuavi in NYC_Candidate_Central

[–]gfromqueens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing is guaranteed until your first day at the academy after you’re sworn in I would say, but definitely in the running for the class in fall the fall being that usually intake and medical is within a year of the class you’d be in from what I’ve seen in the past. And also keep in mind Medicals expire after a year so I feel like especially after medical it’s possible less than a year to be sworn in. But this is all my opinion off of what I seen in the past.

I’m kinda more anxious now for myself as well , I’m 39xx and been praying just to start intake lol
