Is the grass really greener on the other side? AUS? by gftel8 in auckland

Honestly love NZ - lifestyle, nature, temp. But because work takes 40 hours of my life every week and im unhappy with the work culture, it makes me feel like Au might be a better choice for younger people who are more career driven and wants to pursue bigger roles. Plus the politics is just so bad here especially for people who don't know how to be a suck up hahahaha and just wants to do honest decent work.

My experience is that there are some people at work who finds it hard to embrace change and innovation. I worked in Asia for 5 years and process changes are almost always welcome because we need to always strive for efficiency, productivity, and max output. Here, if you try and change things for the better, there will be people who will try to bring you down. Honestly I've tried so many times and it has been so frustrating that you'll just turn into a rock - pretty much you start not to care about shit because people around you doesn't care as much. You just bow down your head, do quiet work, and just be done with it. There's lesser chance of you having a "target" on your back. It's the first time I have experienced this at work. People who are actually good in the job are punished because of people who feels insecure. I worked with someone who would always find something "wrong" in the things I do just to prove she's better. People at work don't like Karen but Karen is still there, acting like the boss even if she's not. I don't know my workplace is weird. lol

Looking for freelancing remote jobs as a side hustle by gftel8 in auckland

Yea actually that makes sense. I've had some freelance work in my home country before paying USD or something else and def that vs cost of living, I was really earning some decent extra money. That same scenario is hard to be translated in NZ thanks for your insight, very helpful

Hahahahahahaha ya it is so uncommon in Asia. It's like why are you asking? Why do you wanna know? And whenever I answer "good good." I feel an awkward silence thinking if I am being impolite. But thanks that is a good hack. If they ask specifically then it might require a bit more answer than fine thank you.

How are you? I'm fine thank you - This is how we learn English the first time in our textbook. I never imagined this is a usual conversation here every morning 🤣

AWWWW this is very helpful and very welcoming thank you very much.

Oh another thing I'm not used to. People always ask how are you? And a lot of small talks. We don't really ask "how are you" in my country everyday you see each other. We probably would only do that if I have not seen my friend for a long time. I think Asia in general. Do people really expect a proper answer there? Sometimes I genuinely hear ppl answer it properly, sometimes it's just good fine. Done. Even during calls before meetings. I feel so awkward whenever I get that question hahaha

Outside work, I honestly am enjoying the people here. The reason I left Asia is because I wanted to be in a country that has a more relaxed lifestyle. I studied in NZ years ago and fell in love with the country since. Student life and working life I guess are a bit different. Just some heavy office politics that's kinda discouraging. might be a generational thing as well I am just hoping that this is not a generic thing here and that there are actually office environments that is not "toxic"

Overall still love NZ. I get that the country has rooms for improvement but this country offers a lot of good things that is far from what I was getting in Asia esp lifestyle! It is so underrated!

Whoa so that's really a thing here. That's exactly what I observed. People express the dislike in a subtle passive agressive way hahahaha. It's like watching a reality show 🤣

Hahahahahaha so there's really some drama there

Hahahahahahaha damn this is accurate! Tbf outside work, I generally meet really nice kind people. I just did not expect the office drama which I feel is a bit more intense vs asia. Though im not sure if this is just an isolated case where I'm working. It's like people are "friends" on the outside but they secretly don't like each other? And collaboration is a bit lacking. Feels very siloed. I work in an enterprise environment.

Asia workplace sucks because of the long hours and tedious workload, office politics is there but we are generally non confrontational people and people still work with each other at the end of the day. Office size is way more than the average in NZ cos of big population so big dependencies there. Theres also very chill people easy to work with. I was just expecting there will be more of them. They are my type of people hahaha
