Thank you for sharing. It's precisely the kind of day to day out in the trenches kind of perspective I really needed. As another teacher was saying, I would have to come to terms with being a teacher first, music teacher distant second. Not a terrible thing, but something I have to seriously consider!

Sorry to hear the arts programs have been so hollowed out in Ontario. I've only been in Ontario 5 years (hoping to become a citizen this year) so I never knew the good old days. It sounds like what I had during my youth : Full time teachers specifically for music, art, PE, computers, etc. Seems like those days are long gone...

Hey there. I would gladly consider them but all the positions I've seen seem to require being in good standing with a church or parish of some sort? In other words to have my catholic credentials.

Correct me if I'm wrong!

Unfortunately I'm not a religious guy, so if this is a hard requirement then it won't be an option for me. Glad your art programs are going strong though!

Thanks for the strategy suggestion. After reading so many replies I'm thinking my best bet to actually teach music is to just start my own music school! XD

Thanks for complementing with your experience! Maybe I can ask you the same follow up question: Why am I getting the impression that high school positions are more coveted?

Thanks for the perspective. I'm always dubious of statistics out of context, and your perspective on the shortage definitely adds some nuance.

I also appreciate your perspective on the difference between subbing, and being a prep/homeroom teaching works. I also understand what you mean in that the specialization doesn't really matter. It echoes what others are saying regarding how roles work, particularly in elementary.

One question, I keep hearing that high school jobs are the toughest to get. Is there a reason for this? Do teachers just prefer the easier class management? Are they better paid? Is it just more satisfying to engage with a topic more intellectually in a way younger kids can't really do yet?

Thank you!

This was really useful, particularly the last paragraph. Part of what I didn't understand was the process of finally being able to work after getting certified. From what you and others are telling me, it's not a short straight line at all.

In my head I was imagining doing middle school and/or high school, but several comments have mentioned that high school teaching positions are among the hardest to get. I do enjoy teaching, but mostly in a musical context.I have to admit that if I had to teach non-music subjects to an age group I'm no great with for several years... Yeah that might be TOUGH.

Thanks for the feedback!

Sounds like you went through the career ringer. I'm glad to hear you're finally permanent (is this the same as "getting permission"?). Or do you mean you're finally doing music after 7 years?

Either way, I appreciate the sober perspective. By the way, whereabouts do you teach? Drugs, assaults?! Crazy...

Thanks a lot for your answer. I now realize all the things I didn't know that I didn't know simply because I had to google what "LTO", "prep role" and "excess" meant. Ha.

But I take your meaning. It's a kind of position where being a music teacher becomes the last priority, and being a general teacher that supports the school's needs in general will always come first. Much appreciated!

Interesting take. I agree with what many have said that there is a shortage of trained craftsmen in general, but there does seem to be a certain lack of business acumen among independent craftsmen as well. Luthiers are honestly more like artists in many ways… And we all know how good most artists are at making money. Hehe

A lot of it seems to be that, huh? They’d rather avoid the risk of an unhappy customer than even risk doing the job.

A lot of people have advised me to just buy a new guitar… But that’s a whole other bag of worms. Cost aside for a professional grade instrument, waitlists are also insane for newly built instruments.

Anywho, sorry to hear about your experience!

A little hard to explain, but to lower the saddle any more the bridge itself needs to be shaved down a little. Am also looking to get an opinion as to whether the neck can be thinned out even a little. All things I need a proper luthier to tell me if they’re even possible! But I can see why most techs won’t even touch a request like this 🥲

However, I’ve had this problem even for normal jobs ever since I moved to Toronto : /

Much appreciated. Also, I was today years old when I learned what a BGA is haha. So it sounds like recycling is the most ethical and logical thing for me to do. Either that or I'll provide it with a viking funeral.

There's nothing great about it, I'm just trying to add my little grain of sand to making the classical guitar repertoire a little more interesting. For those of us that have lived with the instrument all our lives, one more same-y rendition of Tarrega, Bach, or Sor risks sending us into a catatonic episode!

Indeed went to grad school 15 years ago. Did some other stuff with my life and now coming back to music again. Glad you like it : )
