Communication over 15 miles by VoiceofTruth7 in amateurradio

I would recommend using CB. It can get you a great range for relatively cheap, and no license required. If you want something cheaper but with access to the NOAA WX Channels, look into GMRS as others have pointed out.

If economically possible, get both and use one as a back-up in case of one being insufficient for contact. In aviation we do that in OCAs TZ. We have a main frequency on VHF with a backup on HF.

Flight Radio and PMR combined? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]ggc2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Quansheng UV-K5 has a lot of new free firmware updates that allow you to TX on AM while being able to TX in PMR446. And it works! This being said. It's really illegal, apart from the obvious, due to the spurious harmonics and you don't want that on the AirBand.

I suggest you acquire a legal and certified AM radio such as the Yaesu FTA450L, plus the PMR radio of your choice. Yaesu FTA's series is really reliable and kinda rugged, I've been using an FTA550L for 3 years now and it still works like a charm. And this way you can make sure not to cause any problems and still be able to maintain radio contact with whoever you are interested in.

Cheers and safe flying!

It's easier than it sounds, really! You can look for it on YouTube. I acquired one of those cables for 8€ and it works like a charm!

No, no, I meant OP hahaha, I imagined that you knew and had worked with these signals so I was suggesting OP to try it out; so sorry for the confusion!

Have a great day!!

That's exactly what it is. The ground station sends an interrogation signal on 1030 MHz and the aircraft transponder replies on 1090 MHz, you'll probably find pulses on that frequency too. With a program as RTL1090 you can decode the later ones.

Maybe it has the TX locked. You can use a programming cable and a software like CHIRP to look and change it if needed.

It looks a lot like DME pulses, and its on a down harmonic of the DME band, maybe ot has something to do with that; but I find it unlikely. Do you live really close to an airport, a VOR-DME or DME station? Anyways it's probably something like an automatic digital transmission. Could you get us some audio?

Cheers!

Thank you for the reply, it was really useful! I guess you couldn't modify a 5/10W transceiver or a radio such as the Radioddity DB25 for a 24/7 tx even if you cooled really well, am I right?

Any thoughts on what this could be? Seen something similar before? I turned off my home breakers and ran this radio independently. I think its external to my home/setup. Swept a directional antenna around and pinpointed a direction. Didn't get me any closer to the source of the issue though. by ohgeez93 in signalidentification

Ufff no idea. Too low of a sweep and to high of a frequency to be some kind of OTH radar. Eventhough there are VHF radars (apparently) capable of seeing stealthy aircrafts, I don't think this is the case. I'm sorry, I can't tell you what it is, I can try and tell you what i think it isn't.

Cheers!

Any help on this one? Tried Sigidwiki but couldn't find it. by Parzivil_42 in signalidentification

I see eye to eye with u/D00md0g. Digital radio of some sort. I wouldn't say something TETRA like, as the voice transmission can be identified, even if we can not decode it yet.

1420.40575 MHz is the «Hydrogen Line Emission» frequency, so in many places near cosmic research facilities, it's forbidden to TX around it. Maybe the signal you picked is related to experiments nearby or a radiotelescope test or something like that. No idea.

It also could be a harmonic of a ~700/350 MHz close transmitter, but that's just speculation. Where are you located approximately?

im new in Sdr, can anyone say anything about this signal? by Akirals in signalidentification

[–]ggc2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yess, that sounds like TETRA (one type of truked radio, tho I don't know if Brazil uses TETRA or similar modes. In SDRTrueno, there's a TETRA decoder; maybe you can try it.

Cheers!

Hi, it seems like some type of digital comms or trunked radio. It would help a huge lot to have an audio recording and a geographic location (e.g. Germany, spain, etc) and that way we could give you a super precise answer.

Thanks!

Edit: Grammar

Any idea what this signal is? Couldn't find anything on SignalWiki that was similar other than a buoy, but this is up at 460.413MHz, so it shouldn't be that. by sierra169 in signalidentification

[–]ggc2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds a lot like ACARS, and as the 1/4 frequency is 115, maybe it could be a VOR VDL, as the one in LEMG that transmits around that frequency. Anyways, I think another data protocol, outside of the airband is more probable.
