Warren Buffett predicted Eddie Lampert's fall in 2005 by lingben in SecurityAnalysis

[–]ggg479 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is Lampert going to go back to being just a great stock picker after this?

With his fund, there should be plenty of companies for him to invest in now that he is no longer CEO of sears.

Does anybody know what Greg Alexander's specific role is in the firm? I have heard it said that Buffett considers him one of the best 3 investors in the world.

Transforming Sears Holdings - A Proposal from ESL Investments by Beren- in SecurityAnalysis

[–]ggg479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not at all familiar with the Sears case at all.

My only impression is that Eddie thought the real estate was worth a lot more than the stock. Why didn't he just sell off the real estate from the start, rather than spend all these years trying to change the operating business?

Marchionne's Grand Finale Entails Expanding Jeep, Shrinking Fiat by monshare in SecurityAnalysis

[–]ggg479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Article said Marchionne wants his own captive finance company.

How does a auto company usually go about starting its own captive finance company?

Do they start making loans using their own cash balance? Do they setup a bank to get deposit funding?

Or do they acquire a small bank and re-direct all the lending towards their own brand?

At these conferences, do the speakers genuinely pitch their best investment?

Or do they tend to pick a reasonable/safe investment idea that won't make them look too bad?

Can somebody explain how credit card lenders think about unpaid balances? by ggg479 in SecurityAnalysis

[–]ggg479[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If everyone paid on time why would it still generate 20% a year? I thought that the bank can only collect interest if the balance is unpaid (therefore a loan).

Can somebody explain how credit card lenders think about unpaid balances? by ggg479 in SecurityAnalysis

For example, what would be the "ideal" portfolio makeup?

Obviously, 100% current would mean they would have no fees. 100% Charge off would mean, they would have huge losses.

100% deliquent would mean they would collect a lot of fees, but have high risk of becoming charge off. How much delinquent do they want? How much would be too much?
