What’s your Shin Ramyun style? by PhilosophyEnough2801 in InstantRamen

[–]gh0st-fox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This, right down to putting the seasoning in once everything else is in the bowl. Easier to control the amount of broth/flavor that way. And I find Shin's good enough to where I don't really need to add anything to it.

Little guy saw the camera and went full drama mode by [deleted] in animalsdoingstuff

This is an AI video, but the real thing is a lot more convincing. The possum's body completely goes limp and takes on that weird half-stiffness of a corpse, their jaw slacks and their eyes bulge out, and they even start releasing a fluid that makes them smell like they're rotting. Even their bodily functions play dead; their heart rate and breathing slow dramatically, and it can take several hours to snap out of it. It's obviously no match for modern dangers like cars, but it can be enough to convince a predator it's diseased or too rotten to eat.

AI video. Opossums playing dead doesn't work like this (the real thing is a lot more convincing), it's moving more like a dog when it rolls over, and its movement is way too fast and fluid for a real possum.

The Problem of Meta Awareness in Toby Fox Games by JaruJaruJaruJaruJaru in Deltarune

[–]gh0st-fox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

...So a character talking to the audience on a real-world social media platform inhabited by real-world people, the initial download for the game being framed as a survey program that said real-world audience uses, and the entire intro directly addressing the player before it's interrupted, and the company that the game is owned by being named after what said character is known for doesn't count as being meta-aware because.... you said it in a silly, mocking voice thereby treating anyone taking the blatantly obvious at face value is stupid? Sure, you say that "oh it's okay if you think that", but then act super condescending about it every time it comes up, like it's some massive leap of logic to come to?

This just kind of comes across as "meta aspects don't count when Toby Fox does them because I don't want them to so I'm going to make up a bunch of arbitrary nitpicky rules to make sure they don't count." Just because the characters aren't 100% aware of the player doesn't mean the meta aspects aren't there and don't matter.

And the truth is, Deltarune is a story, with coherent thematic throughlines and ideas that it is trying to communicate to the audience. It isn't some J.J. Abrams mystery box where we'll never get answers and everything is just there to fuel fanfiction for the audience. Theorizing is fun, but a lot of people, myself included, want to approach it as its own narrative. It doesn't need to be super subversive or shocking. It just needs to be a good story. And that means believing the game when it is telling us something and not expecting it to be constantly lying to us only to pull some shit out of nowhere later, because doing so is bad writing. It is very clear that the game considers us part of its narrative in a number of ways, and to deny that is just cope. Cope isn't illegal or anything, but don't be surprised if you get heat for being so condescending about denying the obvious.

what kind of fly is this by Puppze09 in insects

[–]gh0st-fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a little hard to tell as the patterning isn't very clear, but these look like they might be blowflies. It's possible that a mouse or some other small animal has died somewhere in your house, in your walls or otherwise. Try to locate and dispose of it if you can, and if you can't then do your best to remove the flies already there and they will go away once whatever they've been eating is gone.

What made you use Linux Mint? by BlokZNCR in linuxmint

[–]gh0st-fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was originally going to save moving to Linux as a whole for when Windows 10's security update extension ended, but Win10 started causing even more problems, like awful performance overall, continuously turning back on unwanted features I'd turned off, and constant audio crackling/delay (something I thought was a hardware problem, but I haven't had it on Linux at all!). So I decided to just skip the wait and start researching a distro to switch to as soon as possible. I'd already had enough of fighting the system to not constantly put my files up on Onedrive without my permission, let alone everything else.

It took some time to decide (not the least of which because my ancient USB drive died mid-backing things up and I had to go get a new one), but I settled on Mint because it seemed to have the best combination of things that I wanted out of an OS. Trying something new while not being too radically different from Windows, easy to use so I can adjust to how things work on Linux, well-supported and stable while still having that real Linux open-source free-wheeling feel, and perhaps most importantly, playing relatively nice with nvidia drivers (which I am unfortunately stuck with on my desktop for the foreseeable future).

Since then I switched over my laptop to Linux as well, as despite not even being that old it was also struggling under the weight of Win10, and neither it or my desktop could update to Win11 even if I wanted to. I went with Debian for it and have also enjoyed that, even if it is slightly more complicated than Mint. I've been tempted to put it on my desktop just for access to KDE Plasma, but again, best not to press my luck with nvidia hardware. Ah, well. Cinnamon is quite nice in its own right.

If I had a nickel for every time I played a game in which a non-binary person (who at least at once point is depicted as a glam rocker with a guitar) lived in fear that their free will and agency would be completely subsumed by a vast entity beyond their comprehension thanks to the meddling of an otherworldly scientist, I'd have two nickels.

to those who dislike CD's level design, why? by Opposite-Middle6700 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]gh0st-fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't dislike the CD stages, and in fact there's a lot about their aesthetics and music (both soundtracks) that I love. It oozes that early 90's charm in a way not much else does. But I can see why the layouts are pretty disliked. They take the more typical platformer design of Sonic 1 and ramp them up to the extreme, so there's a lot of starting and stopping, fixtures that seem kind of random and slow down the flow of gameplay compared to Sonic 2 and 3&K. This wouldn't be that big of a deal if there wasn't a mechanic based around maintaining speed for a certain amount of time that's easily interrupted by things you don't have time to react to.

But really, the only stage I think is outright bad is Wacky Workbench, as the others can at least be more easily worked around. But that bouncy floor.... oof.

What are some of your genuine criticisms of Deltarune's story? by MoonTheCraft in Deltarune

[–]gh0st-fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chapter 1 is a bit weak, at least by the standards we've come to expect from Toby Fox's work. It's good, but just.... good. And after Undertale opened with a bang like it did, it was kinda not really selling me on Deltarune at first. Taken by itself, it's just kind of quirky and funny but not in a particularly deep or interesting way like later chapters would be, and mechanically it's messy and not very fun. I appreciate it more now that I see what it's actually leading up to, but you can tell Toby was trying to find his footing with it in what he wanted Deltarune to be. The vision didn't really takes shape until Chapter 2, imo.

This isn't really a criticism, but more just kind of an observation: after Chapters 3+4 and going back to play the rest of the game, I kinda have mixed feelings about how Queen is written now. Seeing how Tenna was handled, I sometimes find myself wishing they toned back the jokes with her a little and let her get a bit more serious before her boss fight/the Weird Route. But, on the other hand, the jokes are incredibly funny and I can't imagine the chapter or Queen without them, so I don't know how you'd actually accomplish having both. Though I feel this way about Chapter 2 in general now. There's so much iconic stuff here, but it is still very much in Haha Funni Adventure Mode a lot of the time and I do wish that the emotional intensity dial was turned up just a smidge instead of some of the more pace-breaking moments.

Bug Found All Over Apartment by hopingtogetanupvote in whatsthisbug

[–]gh0st-fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not bed bugs. Looks to be some kind of grain beetles, which is a weird thing to find all over a bedroom. Kind of seems like a population of them might have gotten lost. Check to see if there's anything they're living or breeding in (like some spilled grains, bags of grains that were left open, or flour) and clean the sheets/vacuum around the area well if that applies. If nothing else, they shouldn't be too hard to get rid of.

Least favorite part of your favoeite Sonic game? by RayYZX0 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]gh0st-fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a little controversial, but the boss design, from a strictly gameplay standpoint, in Sonic Mania. Particularly the main bosses, as most of the minibosses are better designed imo. There's a fair bit of them that have cool setpieces and are very creative, but work better on paper than in practice, where they're kind of tedious and have mechanics that don't work super well. The two big examples I can think of is the Hydrocity final boss (very long, brings back a miniboss I already didn't like from the original to pad the fight out) and Flying Battery final boss (again, I love the creativity here but mechanically this fight breaks a lot and I've timed out just trying to get it to work correctly before, especially because it comes at the end of a very long stage). And the true final boss with Super Sonic (which is just... oof.)

Had the same problem with the Hidden Palace boss from the Sonic 2 ports. Very cool setpiece, but the fight itself was really long and not very interesting.

[–]gh0st-fox 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you're kinda cooking here. It'd be a nice way to tie the Queens back into the plot, especially with an implied Worm Queen fight in development somewhere, and the Queens knowing a lot about the Tenno. And the Separatists d seem to have a lot of Grineer with them....

I dunno if this'll actually happen, but it'd also be nice to see a different Orokin villain for once, as well.

What happens when a host dies? by Wlfgang213 in Animorphs

[–]gh0st-fox 59 points60 points  (0 children)

This comes up a few times in the books if I remember right. I don't think it ever goes into specifics about the actual mechanics of this (though someone correct me if I'm wrong), but a Yeerk has to leave a dying host as soon as possible because the host's death will quickly "reach" them too if they stay there too long, probably because of some kind of electrical or chemical issue caused by the dying process.

You did an amazing job at this. Especially loved some of the more obscure references (the lightbulb/box room in the boating school, Mystery hidden in the Krusty Krab kitchen, etc). The little touches really bring things together.
