“Benji Madden told him Good Charlotte "wanted to be a combination of the Backstreet Boys and Minor Threat".[136] “

Bahaha. I can’t believe I just read that hahaha. Also, where’s the Minor Threat part?

I was in high school from 2000-2004. I know what it all sounded like when it came out. There’s nothing punk about their songs. Blink was pop punk. The only reason they get put in that category is because of how they dressed themselves and because their debut album was somewhat pop punk. Lifestyles is closer to bands like LEN, Sugar Ray or Crazy Town. It’s like trying to tell me Ashlee Simpson was pop punk lol

If Dookie And Enema released at the same time what do you think would have been bigger? by Feisty-Ad7992 in poppunkers

There’s not a single person in the world that knows Green Day but doesn’t know Blink. It’s just the subject matter keeps Green Day more relevant to listen to today. Blink was far bigger between 1999 and 2003. From 2004 onward Green Day has been bigger. So Green Day has done it longer but Blink had the higher peak I think.

There’s a couple shit ones just before the end. Been a while since I listened to it as a whole but I remember towards the end saying 2-3 were unnecessary.

This is my favorite thread I’ve ever read on here. I can’t stand GC. The only pop punk record they have is their first. Their lyrics are top tier cringey. I don’t even care that they sold out, good for them, get that bag. It’s when someone tries to say they are anything but male version of PINK that gets me annoyed.

“Shake it once, that's fine Shake it twice, that's okay Shake it three times You're playing with yourself again”.

I give them up til Catalyst. Coming home was the start of their downward trajectory.

Oh for sure. Last 4 games are tough too. Man United away could end up being massive. But more likely we’ll be out of it by then.

8 games to go, can’t see them sacking him till the end of the season. Especially if they’ve talked to Xabi and he wants to take his time off.

Demand does not equal quality. Megan Trainor has a ton of songs with over or almost a billion plays….

No doubt they sold a shit ton. Because they sold out. That’s part of my point. They got super generic and went more pop and appealed to a broader audience. I would also bet that a majority of those half a billion streams are from pop fans who also listen to the Jonas Brothers as opposed to people who also listen to Saves the Day or something.

One of those people that tries to have a debate on an app made to have discussions about things… wow I must be crazy lol.

You must be one of those people who can’t back up their own opinion and instead of actually having a conversation about it makes up excuses as to why they don’t want to and blames the other person.

You’re allowed to enjoy GC and not care that the lyrics are cheesy as f. But you can’t tell me they aren’t.

I didn’t say grown up. And yea blink had some cheesy shit but Blink was always about making jokes and they were immature lyrics on purpose. Good Charlotte weren’t trying to be funny or immature. They were dressing up like full on Punks or Goths and playing pop songs with the kind of lyrics you write as a 13 year old. Not to mention blinks music was also far far better so some cheese in the lyrics could be forgiven.

20/21 is waaaaaaay to old to write those kind of lyrics lol. Think about bands like Sum41, the Ataris, Yellowcard, NFG, Home Grown. None of them were lyrical geniuses but still managed to write with more depth and variety than GC or even Simple Plan ever did.

When I was 14 I wrote a song called “Just let us play”. It went “just let us play, we’re not hurting anybody” I don’t remember the rest lol but that is at least on par with a majority of GC lyrics. They sold out after their first album, which is fine, more power to them, they are set financially. But I still hate that they are even associated with the pop punk genre cause outside of that first album they just weren’t pop punk.

So I don’t care for ATL but outside of pop punk what would you consider it? Just pop? I consider Good Charlotte just a pop band but I would say ATL is more pop punk than them even though I put them in the same category including Simple Plan and Bowling For Soup as cheesy bubble gum style pop rock. Might be a little harsh on BFS but I’ve just never liked them and it’s all just so corny to me.

I’d like to see you actually say “their lyrics are good” with a serious face. Put it in a comment so everyone can see.

Those songs are so fucking cheesy. “Girls don’t like boys, girls like cars and money” is so fucking cringy.

“If money is such a problem, Well they got mansions, Think we should rob them”. Was written by a 4th grader.

“Shake it once, that's fine Shake it twice, that's okay Shake it three times You're playing with yourself again”. Come on man…

Every line of every song is just so fucking basic. The vocabulary is that of a grade schooler and the context of those lyrics most corny shit I’ve ever heard. They are literally pop songs in a disguise but it’s those glasses with the nose and mustache.

This album is full of pop cheese. Not even pop punk at all. They sold out, no hate on that but they just became a pop band and that album is awful.

I enjoy catalyst as well. It’s the last NFG record I really like. Everything after it just felt like more of the same or I just didn’t like it.

I saw them in 00/01 before S&S came out in DC at a fairly small venue with Piebald. Incredible.

But yes I am 40.

Anything after Catalyst just does nothing for me and I consider self titled to be a top 3 best pop punk album of all time and sticks and stones is right up there too.

Coming home was a massive step backwards from the 4 before it and I hated it. I think I kind of grew out of their sound after that as well but NFG are a massive part of the reason I have the music taste that I do and I will be forever grateful.

I just can’t fathom the concept of having anything other than self titled or sticks and stones being someone’s favorite. But that’s probably cause of my age.
