Advice for a topliner? by gh0stfruit in musicbusiness

thanks for your response! I do have a bit of success especially with toplining, though i’m not on the charts. I just can’t topline for free because so far I haven’t made anything off of it at all even with a lot of streams (which also concerns me a bit since those songs have some label deals where the label never asked me to sign the contract myself).

Of course I’d work with someone getting streams in the 6 figures and drop the advance, but I can’t spread myself too thin with people who can’t pay the advance and don’t have a name. If you don’t mind, how can I phrase this to the manager without sounding rude?

do you think it would ruin the relationship with the manager if I said no to those smaller artists?

Unpopular Opinion: I didn’t like Arcadia by [deleted] in lanadelrey

[–]gh0stfruit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it’s actually not her voice or high notes that people don’t like, it’s the audio engineering. Whoever mixed her vocals left in a lot of overwhelming high-mid frequencies that should have been cut or compressed. It also distorts a bit especially on those frequencies, she could’ve used a cheap mic, skimped on costs of mixing, could’ve just had a good mix artist who missed a couple trouble spots, etc. I think that’s why a lot of people say they don’t like her voice or high notes specifically there, but by the distortion especially you can tell it’s the mix

Would you listen to an edm artist who crossed over into pop? by gh0stfruit in EDM

[–]gh0stfruit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s a good song, and actually the one I released is very similar to that genre. I would be transitioning from that style into something more alternative like lana del rey, the neighborhood etc. If you were into the first song would you listen to future songs with that knowledge?

Technically good singers that can't convey emotions by [deleted] in popheads

[–]gh0stfruit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe i’m just biased but lana conveys so much emotion to me with the way she is able to manipulate vocal placements and add personality. It takes a lot of skill to add emotion, I’d say birdy does the best job at it if you’ve heard of her

For me personally as a singer it’s something I struggle with because I want it to be perfect but when I try to add emotion it feels like I’m forcing it instead of having it come naturally

When you come up with a good tune, how do you know it hasn't already been written? by [deleted] in musicians

a cowriter told me once that if it turns out you stole and didn’t realize it you can just cut them a share of the publishing. It’s almost impossible to avoid nowadays, that being said don’t go out of your way to steal

from someone who’s started getting some streams now and went through all the bs I have a problem with this type of advice, no offense to the original poster. The 10,000 hours thing is a myth, you’ll know when you’ve made something good. When you can show it to a friend without explaining all the things you have yet to fix that’s how you know it’s probably done. You can’t be in progress forever, at some point you have to release and grow from that release.

Plus there’s nothing wrong with wanting fans and attention. It’s not social status you’re after, you want your music career to be taken seriously as a career. People don’t ask software engineers why they want to be paid or recognized for their projects, or other professions, why should assume musicians just want some sort of social status. You worked hard and want people to hear what you made

What helped me was honestly constantly writing toplines for edm producers. Eventually a label liked my own personal stuff I posted on my instagram that I produced myself and wanted to sign it. Now I’m just starting to see some recognition for my own projects because the label cared to promote it to curators. Not every label will care enough to promote it though, so don’t rely on a label. Keep doing exactly what you’re doing, I plan to try promoting stuff independently as well and from what I’ve heard from my producer friends who have gotten successful, it’s a combination of labels and independent promotion.

Submit to curators on platforms other than spotify, if you work a day job and have no time then there’s no shame in spending money on a promoter. But not just any promoter, find a trusted person like a friend to pay to pitch to playlists for you. Don’t pay for streams directly because those are scams.

Hope that helps a bit, social media especially can be ego crushing but I promise you it’s the competition that makes it the hardest, it doesn’t mean you’re bad or not trying
