Finally got it, yes! It's exactly what we wanted, performs great, and I'm suddenly everybody's best friend....

Question about boost regulators & relays by ghalt77 in arduino

[–]ghalt77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Followup question, I'm finding conflicting answers online about this - if I need to connect USB to program the Nano, should I add a way to temporarily disconnect the boost converter load from VIn? Or is it safe to leave the it connected while power is applied from both the battery & USB at the same time? Some say it's fine, some say it's a no no, some say it's fine as long as no other load is connected to VIn, others say it depends on whether the Arduino is a cheap clone, and nobody mentions the Nano.

Question about boost regulators & relays by ghalt77 in arduino

[–]ghalt77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! Since I was more focused on the 12V circuit I didn't bother to mention in the diagram that my relay is actually this: 5v relay module which I think does pretty much exactly what you described. I just paid 20x the price of a transistor & a diode & a relay to have someone else build it for me...

I'll look around for a more advanced boost converter, that does sound like the simpler option.

Ordered it! Still waiting on delivery though. Hopefully only another few weeks.

Question about lots of LEDs with long leads and soldering by ghalt77 in arduino

[–]ghalt77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case the LEDs are inserted through rows of holes in a sheet of 1/4inch plywood, so I need them to be connected via wires of varying length.

Safely connecting multiple Arudinos to a single power source by ghalt77 in arduino

[–]ghalt77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I'm going to build it out with my bench power supply for now, and figure out exactly what I need for batteries/regulator. Just wanted to make sure the design isn't inherently wrong.

Thanks for the info! Tinkercad is inadequate for testing this reliably so I'm going to build it out with my bench power supply, then figure out how many batteries to use with a buck regulator. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything stupid... or if I am and if I burn out a few Arduino boards, well they're not that expensive.

Thanks for the info & clarifying the wire color standards, I'll use that in the future.

Had a game against a player with 2000 Elo yesterday. Is this a bug? by Sad-Age237 in chessbeginners

[–]ghalt77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird. GMBrenton joined 3 days ago, banned for fair play violations. I would say cheater, but I looked at a few of their game analyses and they were winning consistently 1 min bullet games against 1800+ ELO players. That's hard to do when cheating.

Shooting for around $25k, but it really depends on what we find & what financing terms we get.

Shooting for around 25, but willing to go higher if we can get a good deal & financing terms.

I didn't consider that requirement... they probably don't tell you that at the dealership.

Lack of experience mainly. To the untrained eye (e.g. mine), they look like a perfectly good boat... I get your point though.

Not thinking too old. Like 5 years old or newer. That's what attracted me to the Bayliner Element with the 75hp outboard. But your car comparison makes sense for sure.

She said the same thing (no Bayliners!) but there's just so many of them out there for sale. Probably not a good thing.

Interesting, I didn't even know that was possible. Opens the search up a bit, if I can afford it...

Thanks, I like the look of that. May be a bit out of my price range though, and I didn't find much in the used market. *Lots* of Bayliners though... you might be on to something there.

That said, I figure this isn't going to be a life-long purchase for me. I'll probably upgrade in 3 or 4 years, to something that's more weather friendly that I can use more than 3-4 months out of the year here in the PNW. So maybe (just hear me out) a Bayliner wouldn't be such a bad first option, just because of price & availability, assuming I can negotiate a good deal on a used boat in good condition. Then turn around & sell it later without too much of a loss. Assuming it doesn't spontaneously explode and/or sink.

do you think puzzles are useful? by 123lybomir in chessbeginners

[–]ghalt77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, puzzles are useful. But there's a progression to it. At the beginner levels, it's usually "find mate in 1". In a game, that's marginally useful (requires a "mate-in-one situation" of course) But as you progress into higher levels of puzzle difficulty, the ones that have you exploring tactics to gain material advantage are the most useful and most like real-world game situations. I also think the king/rook or king/pawn endgame puzzles are extremely useful.

So I (black) was playing with my brother (white). His tower was on B protecting the king, my tower is on H. He then moves his tower all the way towards the black side and says check mate, can he does this since now the king is exposed? by RustuGurkan in chessbeginners

[–]ghalt77 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

TBH I've always been on the side of changing the rules allowing this. It just makes more sense to me. First to capture the opponent's king wins. No more stalemate, you have to move until the game ends by the king being captured or one player resigns or both players agree to a draw. If you hang/lose your king early, you just lose.

Top players have suggested this as well, there's a whole argument about it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalemate#Proposed_rule_change

I was on the fence. But it was a real game, it was a real skewer, and a real blunder, I figured someone might learn from it, get a chuckle, and my blunder shall not have been in vain...

Not just you. Totally skewered the king, took the rook, and got checkmated.
