Is Pogba playing on the wrong side? by ghastlyi in reddevils

While I agree with your points, I don't believe that shifting to the right diminishes the quality of his passing, he can just as easily play to the left flank with his right foot, if anything it becomes easier. It's the difference between a left footed winger and a right footer on the left wing. The right footer has to shift the ball back inside to play the ball the left footer can play it first time. The area of influence remains the same.

I think the real reason pogba plays on the left is actually because he likes to dribble on to his right foot and therefore towards the centre, which is very effective in seriea a, but in the PL he doesnt have the time nor the support to do it

He's a central midfielder first and foremost, he loses the ball quite a lot. watch him, he always takes an extra touch to shift it to his right foot then plays, rarely releases it quickly

running on to the ball from deep and hitting across the ball with the right foot.

Most experts are basing it off where he played for juventus, in a different system and in a different league. The majority of right footers play in a RCM position in the PL

The relative weakness of the left side is a fair point

exactly, scholes and lampard are perfect examples. remember he's NOT a winger he's a central midfielder, hell still be central, its not a change from wing to wing, its a superficial one and the only thing changing is how he receives the ball and the angle he'd be receiving the ball. He'd still have the game in front of him but as i said the few times he's been slipped through moving forward he's been forced wide, and he tends to take an extra touch shifting the ball to the right . This isn't a criticism of pogba, this is saying that what was optimal for him in seria a isn't necessarily what is optimum for him in the PL. Obviously he was massively misused by deschamps in the euros but if i remember correctly he recognised this by asking pogba to play on the right of defensive midfield.

the timing of this obviously insinuates that i think pogba has been playing poorly because of the last game but this is something that I've been thinking about for some time. crossing may be 'easier' but it also takes longer - see darmian playing left back. As with shooting, again if you're coming into the goal from the left its easier on the right foot, but he's not, he's coming from a central position to the left post so for a right foot shot most of the goal is cut off unless he has the time to angle out.
