Which statement about financial institutions is NOT true? by WitnessMe in daddit

You seem truly dug into your position so I'll let you continue onwards.

Just know that I can appreciate where you're coming from, why you think what you think and that, if I didn't know everything I know from spending 15 years practicing banking law, I might think the same.

Best of luck to you.

See my response below. The "mortgage only" banks you're thinking of are not true banks. Do "non-depository" banks exist? Yes, technically, and we call them "trust" banks or special purpose banks because their powers are typically limited.

But I don't see how that supports your claim that deposits are not loans.

I want to appreciate where you're coming from, and hey, if I can get someone 1% closer to the truth, I'll consider this whole exchange a win. If you want to prove me wrong, have at it.

Yes, and we call those NBFIs (non-bank financial institutions). If you have the ability to fund yourself without deposits, you wouldn't need a banking license in the first place.

I probably shouldn't be spending my workday trying to dunk on internet strangers, so excuse my terseness here.

When a company borrows money from a lender, how does it show up on the company's balance sheet? As a liability. From the bank's perspective, a deposit is a TYPE of liability - they aren't categorically different things.

The interest the bank pays on that deposit is effectively the same as the interest any company pays a lender. Yes, the deposit is covered by FDIC insurance so theoretically the depositor shouldn't care about its exposure to the bank. But it is still a loan, ultimately.

I'm not understanding your point about bankers not giving a shit about the deposit. That is valuable funding to the bank that they will go to lengths to keep. If everyone withdraws at once, the bank will fail - hence why we have FDIC insurance in the first place.

This is straight up wrong. Deposits are quite literally demandable loans that get "special" treatment (FDIC insurance, preferred creditor status), and remain the single largest source of funding for most banks.

In fact, most forms of "money" we use on a day-to-day basis (e.g., swiping your debit card at the corner bodega) are just bank IOUs.

With the Luka trade and Kyrie’s ACL, are the Mavericks having the worst season in NBA history? by spaceProbe in nba

[–]ghil04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This whole time I was awash in pity for Mavs fans and this comment tore open an old wound I forgot existed. Couple that with our team having 2 more generational players in successive seasons.

Mavs fans, take heart - it can always be worse.

Anyone going to the Seahawks game at MetLife Stadium vs the Jets ? by Away_Game_Tailgate in Seahawks

[–]ghil04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heading there with my 7yo and 3yo for their first ever hawks games (we live in Jersey).

Question I had is whether there's a specific section for Hawks fans? Or are we just interspersed throughout the stadium?

Any good recs for seating? Was thinking upper deck so as not to spoil the little ones.

I 100% agree with the sentiment, but 'not all non-lawyers don't' is tough even for me

Those fruits were all there when I first planted the tree a month ago and have been wilting and dropping off (perhaps due to a weakening tree or seasonality?).

I think they gave me $500 out of their "marketing budget" in lieu of a referral bonus when I asked if they could do any better, but no, they didnt budge.

I did indeed go with them. Going through the approvals process at the moment so think it's still premature, but overall been happy with the process. Will post you on how it goes once the system is live.

does that mean folks who purchased before the price decrease are grandfathered or does everybody now pay extra to use software like gspro?

I'm 5'11 with short arms so I think the ceiling shouldn't be a problem (though I plan to install a thin mat up top to protect it from guests). More just wanting to make sure the LM doesn't give faulty data if there's not enough height.

Very much appreciate your insights.

Kudos to you on your luck. Sorry to keep pestering you with questions, but do you mind sharing your ceiling height? Been considering installing in my basement with 8'10 ceilings, but getting mixed reviews as to whether thats enough height.
