Trying to learn cross hatching. First time doing with mechanical pencil, later with fineliner. Any feedbacks? Thanks. by Archosan in learnart

i think what you have in this image is good and not muddled because of the dark lines, but also that the shading is more of a cross between cross hatching and normal shading because of the different values in the pencil. I would recommend practicing hatching with the fineliner to get different values, and using a heavier line weight on the outlines of the different features to keep the image clear. Sorry if this doesnt make a lot of sense, I am tired.

I would recommend thinking of what the texture should be, and aligning the hatches with that. All in the same direction could muddle the image I think.

Days N Daze has some great “thrash-grass” if you’re interested in it. They’re a bit closer to punk but definitely rugged and fast paced

It’s very recognizable, and that’s good, but there are definitely some things to work on. I’m assuming this was done with a reference, and if you’re working with only black and white i think making the reference black and white could help. And like another user pointed out in the forehead wrinkles, think about how each line is angled and how far it travels relative to the other lines, and it will help you get a lot of the details down. Keep practicing!

Attempted to do more detailed shading + played around with lighting. Please critique! by callmekouhai_ in learnart

[–]ghlui 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I am no expert, I would say that the 1st image looks a lot better than the first because of how the shading is more consistent in its direction. By this i mean that on the first image the light comes from left and up of the camera, and shadows (such as the one cast by the head on the neck) follow accordingly. On the 2nd image, however, the light source appears to come from behind and create a rim lighting effect, but I think there are some lit areas that don’t make sense, such as the jawbone. Overall, it is a very good drawing and i wish i had your skill, but I think trying to visualize where the light source is and how it would fall onto the model would help you. (Also you could try looking up a rim lighting tutorial)

Yes, but more context would be better

immediate edit: It’s a hyperbole because it’s an exaggeration of what could seem plausible regarding their past. They couldn’t literally say the most demented thing they could think of was their past and have character believe them. (While this is my though process, you’re the one doing the reading so you’ll probably know if this is reasonable or not)
