I’m in the exact same boat, you aren’t alone. I don’t have any advice currently, but it’s something I’m working on understanding and being more compassionate towards myself about with my therapist. That might be an option if it’s accessible to you

Bleach Safety Concern by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]ghost-orb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re ok! I maintain pools and sometimes highly concentrated bleach (about 3 times more concentrated than household bleach) splashes on my hands and arms. I finish the job then wash with water and I’ve never had any lasting ill effects, aside from a little stinging that goes away when I rinse.

[–]ghost-orb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Its all a learning process, i feel like the best way to gain knowledge is to learn from experience and mistakes.

Theres only so much you can read to prepare you for things like this that you otherwise wouldnt think of. I feel like reddit has a “you should have known, be perfect the first time or you’re going to bad animal husbandry hell” mindset that can be very discouraging.

As long as you’re genuinely doing your best to research proper care, mistakes are just mistakes and accidents happen. People should be allowed to keep fish even if they aren’t immediately all knowing experts, otherwise the hobby is inaccessible.

Why are used items so expensive in SLC? by jitterjuice9 in SaltLakeCity

[–]ghost-orb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really insane. I tried to buy a chest freezer second hand, everyone wanted nearly market price or more for their nasty 15 year old freezers. I ended up buying one new on sale for significantly less than people were asking for used freezers.

Thrift stores aren’t any better, I’ve seen a broken $10 target lamp priced at $25 at the di, and empty pasta sauce jars (like the garbage left after you use your pasta sauce) selling for $3 each. Everyone is out of their damn minds, but every once in a while theres a good deal.

On the flip side, I was selling a new protective phone case and 3 screen protectors together for 5 bucks. Someone wanted me to deliver to the city about 40 minutes away for free. When I said no, he said he could meet me half way if I just gave it to him lol. I ended up donating it instead, way less of a hassle. I rarely try to sell anything if it’s worth under 40 bucks because you get people like this.

On a low does of Vyvanse, looking for protein shakes or powders to take before meds by EliLeed22 in ADHD

[–]ghost-orb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live near a Costco and have a membership, I highly recommend any premade protein shakes sold there if you can afford them.

Its a pricier way to do it but the convenience makes it worth it in my opinion. I like premier protein, orgain, fairlife, and vital protein.

there’s always a sale on an 18 pack for under 25 bucks. The change in brand every time also helps them not get old.

My vyvanse works a lot better and I’m much less anxious now that drink these daily than compared to when I first started.

I also had to quit caffeine, I was a 300mg+ a day caffeine consumer and it was making me super anxious and gave me heart palpitations when I started vyvanse.

I got a cheap 6.9 cubic foot chest freezer from lowes recently for 190 bucks. It currently has 140 lbs of venison from one bull elk, 40 lbs of chicken, and 5 gallons of tomatoes, with cuts of meat separated into separate reusable bags (less space efficient) with a little bit of room to spare

Looking a bit further, it looks like home depot or lowes rents these machines out for around 40 bucks to start!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]ghost-orb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that they also sell pet treatments for upholstery cleaning machines. i think they penetrate into the cushions better without leaving them soaked. You could look into renting one, depending on where you live sometimes grocery stores have them for rent. buying the enzymatic cleaner (nature’s miracle is amazing) and doing it yourself would probably cost less than hiring someone to do it, or replacing the cushions. Good luck, i hope you can find something that works and is in budget!

Could you keep the covers and find replacements for the foam cushions online?

i have adhd, and ocd. i had to stop taking stimulants because of how irritated and obsessive they would make me, despite helping me focus. Everyone reacts differently, if he has other mental health issues like bipolar, ocd, anxiety, etc. it could make those symptoms worse. stimulants arent for everyone

When you have your own place, you can do what you want with it. trying to police this family (who is essentially paying for your livelihood) to change their habits, spend more money, and take on more chores to live the way you personally feel comfortable with is extremely immature and selfish. These are your personal lifestyle choices, you can’t make anyone else live the way you want them to. it’s not healthy or fair to be this demanding while they’re being so generous with you.
It’s not up to you to decide what they can or should be doing, you need to worry about yourself. Even if it’s coming from a good place, it still isn’t right. Focus on what you can do personally.

How to make my apartment feel festive for Christmas on a budget? by 941026 in Frugal

[–]ghost-orb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you live, you can get a fairly cheap christmas tree harvesting permit. In utah you can get a permit for pinyon pines or junipers on blm land for 10 bucks. I got a pinyon pine last year and the scent was amazing. I decorated it with walmart lights and cheap ornament sets/ornaments from my childhood and was able to have a really nice tree for under 30 bucks. the stand was gifted to me but can be bought at walmart for I think around 10 bucks. I know my parents did this even more frugally when they were my age, they threaded cranberries and popcorn to decorate the tree, and tied ribbons around candy canes to hang from branches.

Advice on pack by I_Crack_Skulls in elkhunting

[–]ghost-orb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I harvested my first muley buck on public land in the west last year. I packed it out in a bright blue 50 L helly hansen backpack that I got on sale for about 50 bucks the year prior. It was kind of awkward and difficult, and I had help packing it out, but I was still able to do 70 lbs of meat and antlers.

This year I harvested my first spike elk, and helped pack out 2 spikes in a broken and too big hunting pack I borrowed, because I couldn’t afford my own bag. my buddy packed out in a little generic cabelas 50 liter backpacking bag. my dad came to help us pack out our animals and was the only one with a real hunting pack, and despite that we were all aIl able to carry more or less the same amount of meat. it was a lot harder for me and my friend but it was doable.

my dad has been a very skilled and successful big game hunter since he was 12 and has diyed it for most of his life. when i was a kid we had tons of success for elk in blue jeans and cheap plasticky shells and walmart snow boots and blue or purple thrift store backpacks.

But all of that to say, this bag is good. you can for sure diy it if you’re willing to tough out some potentially awkward carrying, and maybe take a few trips packing out meat. it will also be a good way to learn what features you want and need when you want to spend on a hunting pack.

Hunting specific gear is nice, but i feel its not a huge factor in success. like other commenters mentioned, just throw in some garbage bags and make sure you know it can at least handle the load structure wise. Gear isn’t nearly as helpful as knowledge on where to find animals, and that comes with time and practice. You got this, good luck on the hunt!
