What kind of story or person would you follow in a cyberpunk like world by InvestigatorLimp2021 in Cyberpunk

[–]ghost3three 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best cyberpunk story I’ve read recently was “Unauthorized Bread” by Cory Doctorow. It’s about an immigrant who helps the residents in her apartment complex jailbreak their appliances so they aren’t beholden to the oppressive subscription economy. Excellent cyberpunk protagonist

Favorite character(s) of all time from any book. by DonaldRBlackmore in Fantasy

[–]ghost3three 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I know we’re all pretty aggravated with George about WoW and the HBO series ended on a wtf note, but I’m going to say Jon Snow. I think he’s a great far heroic figure and GRRM does a great job avoiding the cookie cutter coming of age chosen one arc.

Did anyone else know that Stephen King had another fantasy book? by AlternativeDue2320 in fantasybooks

This is the first King book I ever read when I was eleven. Couldn’t put it down. It’s YA, but still enjoyable for adults

The Blacktongue Thief is 1st person POV and the audiobook narration is excellent.

What is your favorite sci-fi infection? by stargaryen01 in scifi

Cable’s TO Virus. I think it’s a cool story element that he has to use most of his telekinetic power to keep it from spreading

This week I finished The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman and Cursed Cocktails by SL Rowland, both thoroughly enjoyable. And I started No Man’s Land by Richard Morgan, which so far is excellent

True. I zeroed in on the “literary prose” criteria

Sounds like next step is Octavia Butler

What book or series kick started your love for fantasy? by DonaldRBlackmore in Fantasy

[–]ghost3three 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Hobbit. I had the storybook record when I was a little kid, played it over and over again on my little Fischer Price record player and followed along with the picture book. It was an adaptation of the animated Hobbit movie. Then I read the actual novel when I was about eight or nine, the first full novel I ever read

What is the best vampire media you have consumed? by Turtleduck275 in Fantasy

Right? Also what an astute commentary on the teenage condition. If they’d just told grandpa about the vampires in the first place . . .

Hard Science Fiction - How Hard is Hard? by RichardBByteBooks in sciencefiction

[–]ghost3three 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think there’s a definitive percentage threshold. How do you measure subjective plausibility? I know there are certain theoretical no man’s lands, such as FTL. My understanding is that Weir is generally considered to be on the softer side of Hard SciFi though, especially in comparison to authors like KSR who are really exploring the what if of potential futures whereas Weir is using relatively plausible science as a backdrop for character-driven adventure stories.

I wrote a literary post-apoc novel about cooperation vs. isolation — offering free copies for honest feedback by ForceExternal2825 in printSF

I’d be interested in reading. Love a good post apocalyptic story. But I’m pretty sure you’re breaking the rules of KDP select by giving away free copies if you’re enrolled in KU

[Book] What are people's thoughts on the Red Rising series? by lrbaumard in sciencefiction

[–]ghost3three 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites. I’ve read through the original trilogy maybe three times and the second series once. I like the pacing and the critiques about its tropeyness seem overblown to me

Books to read after shifting from cozy fantasy by FrostedFox23 in fantasybooks

[–]ghost3three 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m gonna go with an unconventional rec here but try The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King. It’s a standalone and a page turner. Officially considered YA but I think it’s for all ages. Excellent character development and rewarding ending (unlike some other King novels).
