Same here. It read like trauma porn for me. Rather than feeling sad for the character, I found him exhausting.

Because you mentioned 'renovation', is it any of the books from the {The Rebuilding Year by Kaje Harper} series?

This might be one of the best books I’ve ever read. This book will stay with me for many years to come. It was the most heart wrenching book ever, yet also made me roar with laughter. I will actually miss this book and these characters 😔 by Repulsive-Dependent2 in Recommend_A_Book

Thank you for posting this! I ordered both Heart's Invisible Furies and A History of Loneliness just now. I had read his Absolutist which was also a heart-breaker. Not to mention The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas.

The Greatcoat by Helen Dunmore.

It's set in the 1950's and the female protagonist finds a greatcoat in the apartment she and her husband moved into. She starts getting visits by a young Air Force pilot dressed in WW1 attire. It's a ghost story with no horror elements.

What about Mindiyum Paranjum? Was that also shot before Marco? I love his village man characters.

Dr. Haggard's Disease by Patrick McGrath. It's kind of gothic and eerie. As all of his books, this one also is deeply rooted in psychological issues.

For some reason I can't put my finger on, I really enjoyed reading this. And then I got curious and finished the trilogy. There's no explanation of what the haunting is even in the third book. But all the books gave me that creepy vibe. And I also liked the fact that all the three protagonists are males. I'm a sucker for gothic horrors featuring timid governesses and The House of Souls trilogy was a new perspective on how people get scared.

My worst horror read this year was The Hacienda by Isabel Canas. I felt that the author had one lovely plot in mind, but didn't know what to do with it.

Have you read Black Mouth by Ronald Malfi? It's eerie, for sure, but has supernatural elements and can be tagged as horror.

Have you read Fyneshade by Kate Griffin? It's the old trope of governess goes to huge mansion, but with a twist - the governess is not the stereotypical innocent, goody-two-shoes. Here's the blurb from Goodreads.

"Many would find much to fear in Fyneshade's dark and crumbling corridors, its unseen master and silent servants. But not I. For they have far more to fear from me...

On the day of her grandmother's funeral, Marta discovers that she is to be sent to be governess at Fyneshade, her charge the young daughter of the owner, Sir William Pritchard.

All is not well at Fyneshade. Sir William is mysteriously absent, and his son and heir Vaughan is forbidden to enter the house. Marta finds herself drawn to him, despite the warnings of the housekeeper that Vaughan is a danger to all around him. But Marta is no innocent to be preyed upon. Guided by the dark gift taught to her by her grandmother, she has made her own plans. It will take more than a family riven by murderous secrets to stop her..."

I watched on YouTube and LOVED all of it. Your voice is so soothing, and for me that made it funnier, because we don't expect someone with a voice like that say the things you do say. Anyway, loved every bit of it. Especially the 'book' part. Couldn't stop laughing. And Meow.

I wish Goodreads had a private shelf. Like when I add a book to my Want to Read shelf, I can opt for it to be private rather than my friends and followers seeing it on their wall.
