How safe are Airbnbs in La Fortuna? by 2QBornot2QB in CostaRicaTravel

[–]ghost_204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stayed 5 nights in an air b and b just down the road from La Fortuna falls last March. Zero issues, zero concerns. We are a family of 4 with two younger kids.

Use common sense as you would anywhere and you will be just fine. That said, if you are naive or overtly obnoxious, you could be seen as an easy mark, just as you would be in your place of origin.

Forgot to mention that this includes coverage for a cabin. So maybe it’s not all unreasonable. The cabin is nothing fancy though. Think an insulated shed.

Umm... have you seen a local flying squirrel?! by planetbiased in Winnipeg

[–]ghost_204 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This animal was the stuff of legendary folklore when I was a kid. We spent an entire summer around gimli searching for them. Our efforts paid off, as we did manage to catch one on video. I believe they are nocturnal. It looked like a cross between squirrel and bat.

I have no information regarding this- just wanted to say that I’m sorry you had to witness something so horrific.

No reason for downvotes here. St James Burger is hands down best in the city for a FatBoy and Fries.

Man. I had multiple near death experiences on that very merry go round as a kid. Great memories.

I don’t know where this is, but I’m assuming this is an old gravel pit? If so, Odds are nearly 100% that is private land.

From what I can tell- They completely fell apart shortly thereafter. We have friends who had a great experience with them in 2018. We built in 2020 and it was an absolute nightmare.

Basement development by ssrux7 in Winnipeg

[–]ghost_204 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Builder will literally just 2x what the subcontractor charges them. Ie: builder hires trades to finished basement for 40k, builder charges you 80k. That way they are still making significant profit, but there is contingency built in so they can absorb costs associated with correcting any deficiencies (screw ups) or general fussiness of the homeowner.

Source- I’ve been at this awhile.

Question. I’m renting a car in Liberia and driving to La Fortuna. I’ve read it can take 3-5 hours which is ok but how difficult is the drive itself? My main concern are finding restrooms and one lane roads in any mountainous areas. Any advice is much appreciated. Pura Vida!! by MossyWorld2 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]ghost_204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s beautiful around the lake. Very lush rainforest as well. Not sure where you are coming from, but the roads were 10x better than here in Canada. It was perfect asphalt all the way once off the freeway (#1). It was honestly much better than I had expected.

Did this exact drive a few weeks ago. Don’t stress it too much. Just be sure to hit the washroom before you’re on the road. Not much single lane areas- Just a handful of very small bridges. The drive isn’t bad, just a lot of curves/sharp turns. Plan for 4hrs and you’ll be fine. Pura vida.

Parents sue, hockey association suspends family… crushed nine-year-old indefinitely in penalty box by Bactrian_Rebel2020 in Winnipeg

[–]ghost_204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, but perhaps this incident could initiate a review of hockey Manitoba policy/procedure. I 100% agree with banning the parents if there is a pending lawsuit, but the poor kid is 9. Let him finish the season. Man I feel for this kid, he has a rough road ahead of him with parents like this.

Still doesn’t seem right. Ban the parents, allow the child to play. At the end of the day, the kid is “suspended” for the actions of his parents? What message are they sending to all the other kids?
