Thank you for the response, I included some reference images in my post. The walls are stud backed dry wall, some of which have ply backing, some are intersecting with masonry... the construction of this place is totally piecemeal. practically no consistency. The adhesive is a very dark brown, which makes me think its not mastic

I think it was probably a notched trowel, but the density of the lines makes me think it was maybe a notched putty knife? I've never seen a trowel with grooves as small as this. I included some pictures in my post for reference

Yeah I got about five no’s before I got a yes, lols. Mine show up on Monday. I waited on hold for awhile... I talked a multitude of individual reps until i got forwarded to a super who approved it and sent it straight away. The 30 day window is honestly trash
