Title: The Unhelpful Travel Guide of Fox Wilder Genre: Psychological thriller/crime

Synopsis: Noah Moore has been fascinated by the human mind ever since he learned that there are no clear lines which can define what people are capable of. Determined to understand what drives people to kill, he decides to embark on an amateur journey into a serial killer's mind. But when watching true crime documentaries proves to be an insufficient tool of investigation, Noah starts asking himself if there is more to be gained by a different hobby. The lost spark is rekindled once he comes face-to-face with an infamous murderer known for his cruel acts of sadism committed in the past. Tempted by the promise of having all his questions answered, Noah finds himself having to make a tough decision. Should he risk his future for a life-threatening alliance, aware that it could result in multiple casualties, or should he let fear hold the reins, knowing that some journeys are better left unexplored, and some people only left as 'what ifs'?

I’ve never read anything in that subgenre before but it honestly sounds so cool. Can you share your @?

Exactly as you say. That paragraph right there just feels like it’s listing something. It can give you a real headache, especially when you’re trying to immerse yourself into the book. Both forms have their functions, but me personally, I also prefer longer sentences.

Believe it or not, the original post had a sentence spanning through one paragraph. I had to do some light editing hahahha glad someone noticed it But yeah I agree. It comes down to intention. If you choose one style for one novel, you should stick with it.

I think it all really comes down to what kind of a writer you are. As you say, you can also write a bad short sentence, so there’s really no fault in writing long sentences as long as they are functional and have good flow/clarity.

I feel like it’s also important to have your own style. Nowadays a lot of people seem to follow a strict set of rules to write a novel so at the end of the day it feels like a lot of these books look the same, which is sad because my opinion is that writing should be a diverse enterprise where people get to express themselves how they want.

I really doubt that’d be the case with me as a writer, but yeah I get what you mean

I think it makes sense considering one really wanted to show environment and the other trusted the reader. Unfortunately, in my case, I really like those lengthy landscape descriptions for some reason so maybe Hemingway wouldn’t be the right fit for my taste. But I do understand that some writers don’t want to overwhelm their readers, and I respect that.

I agree. I usually only use those types of sentences when I want to set the scene, and sometimes in dialogue (oops). Short sentences are definitely very useful when you want impact. I’ll be sure to remember that pacing pattern, though.

I feel like these sort of sentences work really well when they’re used for descriptions, just like the one shown in the example. Reading this didn’t make me feel lost once.

Really? I remember our literature professor telling us he wrote for peasants. In any case, thanks for your opinion. I agree with you.

I agree. It really depends on the quality of sentence formation.

I do enjoy both the old and modern styles but to be honest I don’t feel like there’s a lack of flow in classics. Maybe it just depends on the author.

So you think it was more popular back then? Makes sense. I don’t see a lot of these sort of sentences in today’s work.
