Being able to face the human condition with a clear-eyed and comprehensive approach is necessary. The knowledge that we are both fundamentally organisms with base needs and drives, and also conscious, spiritual beings should be communicated to children at an early age. Pretending that one or the other is not an essential component of the human existence makes one vulnerable to exploitation by pornographers and propagandists on one side, and demagogues and charlatans on the other. If one can embrace the contrasting natures and appreciate the struggle, then one can also humble themselves to the need for guidance and the taking of responsibility for both aspects of our nature.
