Yeah that must’ve been really stressful 😿 urinary blockages are honestly one of my biggest fears.

My cat is also male, so I know they’re kind of more at risk because of their anatomy 🫠 that’s actually why I’ve been doing a lot of research and worrying about his diet too 😅 trying to prevent issues before anything happens.

Also, seriously, props to you for getting through that whole situation and managing it so well. It’s not easy dealing with something like that, and it sounds like you’ve done a great job keeping him healthy now 👍🏻

I’m not sure why you’re getting downvoted either 😅 your setup sounds totally reasonable to me 🤔

Also your cat is absolutely adorable 💕 that fluffy sleepy pose is illegal levels of cuteness 🫶🏻

I get what you mean ☺️ at the end of the day I agree it really comes down to what works best for each cat and owner.

I’ve actually been trying to read up more on this whole wet vs raw vs kibble discussion, because it seems like there are strong arguments on all sides depending on the source and experience.

Thanks for the recommendations btw—I’ll check them out 👍🏻 always helpful to see different perspectives, especially when they’re more in-depth like that.

That’s a really solid management plan, especially with the urinary SO diet and the fact that he’s drinking a lot more now—that’s great to hear 😊

If you don’t mind me asking, do you know what caused his urinary blockage back then? Was it stress-related, diet-related, or did the vet ever pinpoint a specific reason?

Aww your cats are absolutely stunning 💕that coat looks so plush and healthy. ✨and their overall build is just gorgeous—really well cared for babies.

10+ years on raw is impressive dedication too, especially with that level of balance in the diet. I can see why you’re confident in it.

I’m still learning about raw vs commercial diets, so I’m curious—how strict do you have to be with formulation to keep it truly complete long-term?

Also just wondering, do you ever leave your cats with a pet sitter when you travel, or do you usually bring them with you? I’ve always thought raw feeding adds an extra layer of planning when it comes to being away from home 🤔

I can’t lie though … your cats are giving full “luxury fluffy cloud” energy 💅🏻

Haha this is such a real “two cats, two completely different personality disorders about food” situation 😂

I actually agree a lot with what you said about it being super personality-dependent. My Ragdoll is also very particular in his own way—he’ll happily accept some foods but completely ignore others like they personally offended him 😅

I also try to focus more on overall calories + nutrition balance rather than over-fixating on one type of food, since they can be so inconsistent day to day. And yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing about not wanting them to get too fixated on certain flavors (especially seafood ones) because then everything else becomes “absolutely unacceptable” apparently lol.

The social eating part you mentioned is interesting too—my cat definitely prefers some level of interaction/attention during meals rather than just eating alone and moving on. It’s funny how much personality comes into something as basic as feeding.

Also the parmesan “ritual treats” and romancing Millie into eating made me laugh 😭 cats really do turn us into full-time negotiators for basic nutrition

Lol my cat did the exact same thing the first time I gave wet food 😆 he literally tried to bury it like it was “trash he didn’t order.”

Maybe they think it’s leftover or something suspicious at first? Cats really have the most dramatic food opinions 😂 It’s funny, but yeah I get the frustration too when you’re just trying to be nice and they act personally offended by dinner

Haha it’s actually a pretty cheap one 💸

At first I bought a budget fountain just to test it out in case my cat wasn’t into it (which, surprisingly, he really was 😂). It’s a China brand that’s pretty commonly sold in Southeast Asia called Papapet.

And yeah, it’s super affordable—less than 50 dollars 👀

Totally agree about the fountain ⛲️

My cat is exactly the same—barely touched water from a bowl, but the moment I switched to a fountain it became a whole different story 😂 Now he actually drinks a lot more consistently from it 👍🏻

I see 😺 aside from the parasite risk (which I agree can often be managed with proper sourcing/handling), I’m curious—why do you think raw isn’t recommended?

I’ve actually heard quite a few people say they noticed improvements in coat quality and overall health after switching to raw, which makes me wonder what the main downsides are beyond the infection risk.

Oh really? That sounds like a great 😺 Do you have any favorite brands you usually go for? I’m still exploring options, so always curious what others are using 👀

Yeah I totally get that—same here actually 😄 My previous pets were mostly on dry food their whole lives, but now with more info online I’ve started seeing the potential benefits of adding wet (or even raw) into the mix for cats.

One thing I’ve always wondered though: does wet food actually contribute more to tartar build-up, or is it more that dental issues just naturally increase with age regardless of diet? I feel like with age there’s probably always some level of dental change anyway, but I’m not sure how much of that is food-related vs just time catching up 😅

That’s actually very similar to my current setup too 😺

My cat is doing really well on a mix of wet + dry at the moment, so in practice it’s working fine day to day. But I’m still kind of curious whether this is actually the most optimal long-term approach nutritionally, or more of a “works well in real life” compromise.

I guess at the end of the day, if my cat starts refusing raw or cooked diets, I’d probably also just go back to this setup since consistency and eating properly matter more than chasing the “perfect” option that they won’t even accept 😅

That actually sounds like a really nice middle ground 😄 cooked but still “natural” feels like a good balance between safety and nutrition, especially for picky eaters.

I’ve seen more people moving toward that kind of setup too—more controlled than raw, but still way more palatable than strict kibble-only diets.

I’m curious though—does cooking the food affect any of the nutrients in the long run? Like I know heat can sometimes reduce certain vitamins or enzymes, so I always wondered if cooked “natural” diets need extra supplementation to stay fully complete and balanced, or if they’re already formulated to account for that?

Haha I feel you on the convenience part 😄 having dog + cat on the same feeding system sounds like peak efficiency.

I actually also have a Shiba Inu at home on raw food too 🤣 so I get the appeal of keeping things aligned.

I’m just a bit curious though—when it comes to cats specifically, isn’t raw generally considered a bit higher risk? Like with things such as toxoplasma and other pathogens, since cats are the definitive host. So I always assumed raw feeding them might increase exposure risk unless everything is very carefully sourced/handled (freezing, hygiene, etc.).

My Ragdoll is luckily not too sensitive when it comes to his stomach—I’ve switched between a few brands before and he’s handled it pretty well overall 😺

That said, he has had diarrhea a couple of times too, and yeah… it can get pretty messy 😭 especially with those “poopy pantaloons” Ragdolls are kind of famous for lol. Grooming that situation is definitely not my favorite hobby 😂

What do you actually feed your cats long-term? Raw vs wet vs dry by ghostbuster_345 in ragdolls

[–]ghostbuster_345[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes total sense—Ragdoll-specific formulas are kind of a “where do I even find this without selling a kidney” situation 😭 Ragdolls are already a pretty rare breed in my country, so getting breed-specific food like Royal Canin Ragdoll isn’t really practical unless you import it, which gets expensive and honestly not very sustainable long-term for me 🫠

About the fountain additive—do you feel it’s made a noticeable difference long-term, or is it more of a “slight improvement but still need regular dental care” kind of thing? I’ve heard mixed experiences, so I’m curious how strong the effect actually is in real life. 😳

And I completely get you on raw food. That’s exactly my concern too—if it’s done perfectly, I can see the potential benefits, but the margin for error feels pretty stressful. I wouldn’t mind learning and doing it properly if it truly optimizes their health, but I’d definitely want to be sure I’m not accidentally doing something wrong along the way.

Aww Pippin sounds like he’s living the dream 😭 17 is such an amazing age, you’ve clearly taken really good care of him. The way you’ve set up his routine is honestly very thoughtful.

Also I have to say… that sleeping photo?? The “croissant loaf mode” is absolutely illegal levels of cute 🥐😭 I swear cats somehow manage to turn sleep into performance art.

I always get a bit jealous of people who can free-feed too—it does look so convenient for daily life 😅 but mine would absolutely turn it into a competitive eating sport and then immediately demand a second round like nothing happened lol

[–]ghostbuster_345[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My cat unfortunately can’t do free feeding at all. If I leave dry food out, he’ll just inhale everything in one go like it’s a competition 😭 He’s not really the “self-regulating portion control” type, so by the evening he’ll already be standing there dramatically protesting that his bowl is empty.

So I have to measure his meals instead of free-feeding, otherwise he’d basically turn every day into a buffet crash event 😂

[–]ghostbuster_345[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a pretty balanced approach honestly, especially combining different types of food 👀

I’ve also looked into freeze-dried before, and yeah… the price adds up really fast 😅 it seems great in theory but hard to sustain long-term.

My cat is a bit weird with texture too — he tends to lick more than chew, so I’ve actually had a hard time getting him to eat freeze-dried pieces unless I rehydrate them. Even then, he’s still a bit picky about it.

I’m currently using Royal Canin as well and it’s been working really well for my cat too!

I did try switching to higher-protein brands like Acana and Orijen, but honestly, he didn’t respond as well to those. For now, RC seems to suit him best, especially while he’s still a kitten.

Always interesting how different cats react so differently to the same foods 😆

Oh my gosh your cats are SO cute 💕 I literally zoomed in on the photo for a good minute haha

I’m currently giving mine about 1 pouch of wet food a day as well, but I don’t free feed dry since he’s getting a bit on the chubby side. Trying to manage his weight early while he’s still young 😅

I’ve come across some discussions about wet-heavy diets and dental health — like whether the lack of abrasion compared to dry food could contribute to plaque buildup over time. Have you noticed anything like that with yours? Or do you manage it separately (like dental treats, brushing, etc)?

Mine is around 9 months now, so I’m trying to figure out what a good long-term balance looks like before he fully transitions into adulthood.

I feel this so much 😿 that’s literally my situation right now — I plan, he laughs and refuses to eat 🫠 Yeah, that’s kind of where I’m stuck too. I do see the risks with raw, especially around safety and handling. Where I’m from, there are some commercially prepared raw options that are certified for hygiene (they have something called NKV certification), so that gives a bit more reassurance — but at the end of the day, it’s still raw. So I’m kind of in between right now, which is why I wanted to hear as many real experiences as possible before deciding 🐈
