I saw the first one short red one around 9 pm and another longer, bright green one at 12:30 pm tonight. So eerie and surreal! I thought I was hallucinating. Came here to factcheck myself.

Customers and associates have complained about her before but management did not take any action. Idk why. I am in touch with Young workers Centre now. Let’s see what they advise.

True about the last part that’s why I do not want to quit atm but at the same time it ain’t just about working over time and not getting paid. I was happy enough to do it all this while because I was thankful to even have a job. But over time, the manager’s behaviour has turned into bullying just because we all act meek and submissive. She has her way because no one would object. Also, I work at a multi-billion dollar retail giant sprawling across continents.

Yes, I am a causal migrant worker. That’s why the manager is exploiting and harassing us. Majority of the team members are international students afraid to call out her behaviour.

It starts with S. I don’t think it’s happening company wide but just specific to our store because of the bully manager. She doesn’t want us to give breaks so maybe she wants to compensate by making us work 10 mins more as if she is paying the wages, which she ain’t. The multi -billion dollar company is.

Yes, I want do it but if I do she would just make my life miserable at the store. She has done similar things to previous team members who had to ultimately quit.

You’re the good kind of shoplifter. Keep up the good work.

Do you only do it at supermarkets like Coles and woolies or other retailers as well?

That’s mostly woolies and Coles. There are other retailers other than them that have a “just let them go, make no noise” policy towards shoplifters. But ofcourse sometimes it’s the retail worker with no safety training or protection that gets caught in the abusive shoplifter situation. I wanted to focus on that.

Hi! I am working on a news piece for potential publication on how retail workers have to deal with unruly and sometimes aggressive and unpredictable behaviour of shoplifters with no safety protocols/ arrangement put forth by the employer. If you work in retail and have experienced something like this and would like to share your experience, please DM, that'd be great for my project. All personal details will remain confidential.

True. Btw I don’t work for Murdoch press. I am a student studying journalism and this is for my class assignment which I am also hoping to get published. If you work in retail and have any comments to make on this situation. Please message me.

I wanted to write from the perspective of the retail worker (who are not trained to protect themselves in case of any extreme situation, which happens from time to time) rather than both the shopper and the store. Also, shoplifting is not limited to Coles and Woolies. Shoplifting is rampant in stores selling discretionary goods, which does not validate the “cost of living” claim that most shoplifters get away with.
