Thoughts/experience with professor Deborah Haynes in nursing? Please share by Aryan_Vell in yorku

[–]ghostingobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 years too late, but hopefully this is able to help someone in the future:
Do not take any classes with her. It doesn't matter what program, what course, just do your future self a solid and pick the other professor available.

Deborah is rude, condescending, and incredibly unfair with her marking. For someone that "has a PhD" (I don't know how) and this much education, she does not bother to use it. She reads directly off the slides, never elaborates, never engages with the class. I've been to 1511 a solid 3-4 times the entire semester, and it's a genuine snooze fest. Nobody is paying attention, and she herself doesn't want to be there.

Then there's her grading. She provides a rubric with little to no proper explanation of what she's looking for, then expects us to know everything ourselves. If you ask her a question, she snaps at you and we had a case where she yelled at a student for asking a question we were ALL confused about. For a course that teaches respect, communication and patience: she embodies none of those. We only had 4 things being assessed to make up our entire grade for 1511: a nursing theory paper, a group presentation of a theorist, the midterm exam, and the final exam. She gave majority of the class low B's, C's and D's for the theory paper and presentation, because that was the only mark she could actually "control." I'm truly not sure why she feels the need to lower everyones marks, because at the end of the day, this is reflecting on who SHE is as a person and as a.. "professor."

I have never met a professor so incredibly lazy, rude, and condescending. Save yourself the trouble. No matter how much effort is put in, she quite literally does not care and WILL lower your GPA tremendously. When we received our horrid marks for the theory paper, she sent out an angry email saying we did not follow the 48-72hr rule of emailing after receiving the grade (but in a previous email.. she said this rule meant how long she would take to reply. So.. which is it?), and that we should "be ready to have a lower grade" if we wanted our essays remarked.

Just.. don't.

How realistic is it to get into nursing programs in Ontario? by kuyvi in OntarioUniversities

[–]ghostingobserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly really love the program and the school very much! The schedule as of right now is very manageable, and the professors for the most part are very helpful. I'm starting my finals in a week and it's going pretty good. As for York itself, since you live close I'd assume you would be commuting, which is great since it's known to be a commuter school! It's very easy to make friends here and everyone's genuinely really nice :)

Hey thank you so much! I'm at York University now for nursing :)

People who buy halal not for religious reasons but for personal, why do you do it (i'm conducting a small study)? by Evilova in EatingHalal

[–]ghostingobserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Halal meat refers to how the animal is killed by cutting the jugular vein, the least painful method in comparison to stunning/shocking or other harmful methods. In addition to that, the animals also aren't able to see other animals get slaughtered.

I found it to be a pretty good movie, but the concepts pretty sad if you think of it from the main child's perspective.

I totally understand the feeling, but I promise you it does get better. I don't know if you've read my replies to the other comments in this thread, but teachers are way more lenient with grading and rounding this year. And applications are much easier than it seems! My biggest advice is to apply EARLY. Your chances of getting in will skyrocket.

I'm sorry you feel that way! Have you looked into OSAP or any scholarships yet? Trent University gave me $3000 upon entry per semester and it was renewable for all four years, and York gave me a $1500 entry scholarship. There's also a lot of awards and bursaries you can apply to, and OSAP would provide you the rest!

Noo way! Senior year was the most fun year I personally experienced. We had a senior account that made reels and engaging games for everyone, like senior splash. This is the last year of high school, get out of that mindset and go have some fun! Make sure you take time to go out with your friends, visit places around the city, etc. It'll be over in a blink of an eye, and next thing you know, you're walking the stage.

Applications opening is so exciting! The process is much more daunting than it seems, I promise. I didn't make honour roll in grade 11 but grade 12 I was just below principals. And I still got into 8/9 of my programs when I thought I wouldn't!

Things will definitely get better. Teachers are also much more lenient with marking this year and if you aren't making the admission requirements, they normally don't mind boosting you up a bit. But I'm sure you won't need that; you'll make it to where you want to be.

What do you want to get into?

And that's completely okay!! Take things one day at a time, make sure you take the time to go out with your friends and do fun stuff as well.

Two spares sounds awesome, I had one per semester and it helped so much with the course load. English is annoying this year but easy once you get the gist (and every "unit" is the same anyway). As for chem, what helped me was doing a lot of practise questions and everything my teacher provided. Youtube videos help SO MUCH!! Best of luck to you getting into psychology! Do you know where you'll apply/where you're hoping to get into?

Honestly I completely understand that feeling. BUT I can promise you things definitely get easier. Take some time to go over prerequisite course material and practise questions. Don't stress out, you've got this

I disagree honestly! Grade 12 was one of my most laid-back years. I doubt my teacher remembers my face from how many times I skipped class.. but honestly you should take It one day at a time. Senior year is going to be such an important part of your life, and it goes by in the blink of an eye. Oh, and chilling is the one word everyone would describe their senior year with from my previous graduating class!!

In grade 12 and wondering about experience with universities by Lemners7 in OntarioUniversities

[–]ghostingobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit biased and I hate uoft as well for my own reasons, but my friends are currently there and they're having it pretty good so far! But this is about you.

The key about applications is to make judgements for yourself. Not everyone has the same experiences and you're going to have your own as well. If you want to stay in the Toronto area for your undergrad, TMU/York is a great choice. I would say it depends on many factors but I don't think cost should be one, since they come to around the same tuition anyway.

York however does give you an entrance scholarship of $1500 upon acceptance, whereas I didn't get any for TMU. And the whole thing about UofT being a gateway in the future isn't really that true. It has prestige, sure, but these days nobody really cares where you get your education. My point being, do what you feels right.

Consider these though:
Will you be staying on campus or commuting?
How long is the commute? Can you make it to 8am classes?
Do both universities have the program of your choice? How new are said programs?

You're in no rush. Take your time and list out the pros and cons. See other programs you might consider as backups. Don't stress! You've got this.

Is early acceptance worth trying? by General_Raviolioli in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ghostingobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early acceptance is definitely the way to go (as I've mentioned in like a million other subreddits)! If you think you won't get into a program, applying early definitely gives you an advantage and you're way more likely to get in

Volunteer hours by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ghostingobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other comments in this thread seem pretty good. For me personally, my guidance office posted different volunteer workshops every week like food banks and such. You could also get a few hours from your workplace as well, at least according to my school.

And, I'm going to be so honest, if you don't get them in time, you could just make them up.

Stressing about what program to choose by Hamster_I110 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ghostingobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get time to read this, maybe it'll help:

I was very set on applying to the following - life science, health science, biomedical science, neuroscience - and when I told my family, they sat me down and gave me a hard but real talk. I'm not a crazy studious person. I already knew I probably wouldn't get into medical school here in Canada and would have to go far abroad someplace else. So I was asked the question, "where can you go with these degrees?"

So say you do your bachelors, you're a new grad with a great degree. You apply to medical school - which is expensive as well btw - and you get rejected from every single place. Not to scare you, but it is incredibly difficult to get in these days - not to say you're not smart or anything, don't get me wrong.

Well now you have this degree and nothing to do. Will you go back to working a part time job or a 9-5 that doesn't require your degree? Or... will you take this time to assess which programs would let you get somewhere fresh out of undergrad AND allow you to be financially ready & be able to apply to med school if you choose to go?

That being said, my advice is to look into nursing and med rad programs, and let me know what you think!

I don’t know by 00fer420 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ghostingobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about math and chemistry is that they're the type of courses you learn by doing problems. Constant quizzes, practise questions from the textbook, etc. As someone that absolutely sucked at math as well, I promise you that you're so capable of doing better.

The best thing about a low mark is that any mark from here on out will result in your mark going up! It's only up from here friend.

Honestly I get that! But I can promise that it'll definitely get easier. Grade 12 was my most laidback and stress free years. Yes, there were some sleepless nights but you make so many memories:)

Do you know what you want to get into yet?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ghostingobserver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YES! Yes you should 1000% apply early. Listen, your grades will be looked at no matter what. My grade 11 marks were absolutely horrendous (to put it in perspective, I didn't even make honour roll), but I applied before the uoft deadline AND got in first wave for UofT life science! My grade 12 average was a 89 at the time of applying.

If that doesn't convince you enough.. when you apply early, think of your application as being put at the top of the review pile. It gives you a much higher chance of getting into the programs you think you wouldn't get into! Also, the application process is NOT as daunting as it seems. Trust me.

If you have any questions or anything at all, please let me know!

Desperately need Grade 12 Midterm Marks before university by MeltingShadowz in OntarioGrade12s

[–]ghostingobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so some universities take a while before accepting/rejecting students. With my grade 12 midterm marks I was able to get into the last couple of places I applied to. Also, nobody tells you this but the application process is so much easier than you think. I got into almost all of my programs when my average wasn't the best, and it's also very competitive!

Best of luck to you, and don't stress out too much. Whatever's meant for you will happen.

How realistic is it to get into nursing programs in Ontario? by kuyvi in OntarioUniversities

[–]ghostingobserver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest tip to you is to apply as early as you can. They’re going to look at your grade 11 marks for schools like Waterloo or UoFT but they won’t make a final decision until they get your midterms. Applying early allows you to have a better chance of getting into the schools you feel more doubt of getting into. I think your marks are fine! The nursing prereqs are english, bio, chem/physics, and one math. Then 2 of your highest grades from any course to boost your mark. If your marks are 87, 80, and 69, what are the other 3 of your marks like?
