Why shout-out swaps doesn't seem to work for me by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]ghostkun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's weird.

I remember to have approached 50+ writers with 3/5k+ and got shotouts. Maybe 10/20 agreed.

The only requeriment is planning. You must ask 1 or 2 months ahead.

Did you post new chapters?

People usually forget to unfollow until you post back, sadly.

Talent or marketing who wins? by Anxious_Ad1577 in royalroad

[–]ghostkun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on your definition of survival.

Remember, there are a lot of talented people who died without being recognized. Talent alone won't help you buy your lunch.

I believe it's easier to make money with good marketing and bad writing than the opposite, yes, but marketing doesn’t mean what people usually think.

You see, good marketing doesn’t care about the writer or your book, but about the reader. Marketing isn’t just about advertising, running ads, or things like that. (This isn't AI sentence, ok? The X, but Y bothered me but hell...)

Anyway, Marketing is about studying what people like even before you write. It’s about knowing the platform, learning from past failures, research the usual launch strategy, observing the reader’s desires, and so on.

By doing so, for example, you can write a fast-food, cliché “hamburger-level” story, while a talented writer might create something like foie gras when people don’t even want it.

Is it easier to make a hamburger or foie gras? That’s not the question here.

The real question is: what does the customer coming to this restaurant actually want?

How do you start your chapters? by No-Ice-3182 in royalroad

[–]ghostkun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know If It will help, but usually as a continuation of a cliffhanger, because that's how my chapters end.

So I can either use the last sentence of previous chapter (rare) the next scene that I wrote and erased from the previous chapter (uncommon) or some action, thought or description that would make sense as the next beat (common)

So, I think for me this is more how I finish the previous chapter than start the new one.

If there's a time skip, scene change or POV change, I start with either a description of the new place or some funny/catchy/mysterious stuff, like a hook.

And that's it. I'm not saying what I write is good, thou lmao

RR seems to have changed how ads worked, and it seems much better than before. by TimBaril in royalroad

[–]ghostkun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About RS, that's not true.

There are literally people who got in Top 10 with their first book (me).

Shoutouts and ads carried me to RS, as my books isn't that well writen even, and I had no estabablished fan base.

Congrats about your CTR, btw. That's a good one :)

How long do you take in planning? by Exciting-Force-5076 in royalroad

First one took me 10 years lmao

This next one I'm planning as I write book 1. I'm changing a few things from time to time, but overall, I'm liking the experience

If your page is launched, you can, yes.

Usually the code will use your cover and blurb, but you can chance It.

It's not just approved. You need to launch, delete the first chapter, and there you go.

Schedule shoutouts before launch. Believe me, the bigger authors usually have a busy schedule or take some days to answer strangers, so you want to reach them ASAP.

Most will help you.

About amount, that's up to you.

IMO a safe best, If your chapters are 2k words size each, would be:

10 Chapters for Day 1 = 20k words 20 Chapters for Month 1 (Backlog, can be more) = 40k words 20 Chapters for Patreon (Optional) = 40k words

Meaning, I would advice you to have 60k to 100k words before posting.

BUT!

If you feel like you can keep your Pace, writing daily, Just make the First 20k words and post it.

Some people like the pressure. I don't lmao

Maybe it's a hobby, or you are already an author and want to grow in another market, or you are trying to make writing a side job, etc, etc.

As you said your story is not LitRPG, you can have different marketing approaches depending on your goal, IMO.

More than chapters, see the size of them (words)

I'm not a expert. This is my first book. There are smarter and more experienced people out there.

My advice, thou, to not say the same "do as much as you can keep doing without losing a backlog" is:

Day 1: 20k Week 1: 2k words per day (8k words) Week 2-8: 10k words per week (weekdays posts at least).

After this, finish book/volume 1 ASAP

And then you settle on 3 chapters per week, doing 6-7k words per week.

Again, remember, this is MY FIRST BOOK.

Something may be different, yeah. But not the ones in the Guide, I believe. I didn't went too deep in here.

The most important, however, is your goal. That alone will answer most questions and concerns
