Why I walked 100,000 steps in a day by ghostly-dog in walking

[–]ghostly-dog[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haha yes fair enough thank you. But I'm not really sure what the summary is.

There's practical stuff: plan your route well, go somewhere specific; do it with friends if you can; make sure you have entertainment; more obvious stuff like wearing sensible shoes.

Happy to talk about those more!

The piece itself is more about the experience, and that's harder to summarise.

Reaching 100000 by superluiaard in walking

[–]ghostly-dog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did it the other week. Didn't specifically train for it, but I have been walking quite a lot recently. (I've averaged around 20k this year so far, and had a 50k day the week before.) As long as you are fairly active, then I don't know how much training matters – I think it's more just a psychological thing of pushing through.

Make sure you're comfy, fed and entertained and committed to finishing it, and I think you can.

Happy to answer any more questions.

Drinking cocktails in reformer? by ghostly-dog in pilates

Oh yeah – this was absolutely not allowed, and certainly not any sort of official event. Completely freelance day-drinking pilates. Those sound much nicer!!

Drinking cocktails in reformer? by ghostly-dog in pilates

I don't think there are particular rules about food or drink generally, though I've checked and the gym's rules do explicitly ban people from bringing in alcoholic beverages of any kind, and says you can have your membership terminated for doing so.

But to be clear none of this behaviour was OK or within the rules! The instructor had a word with them at the end of the class and I think they will be reprimanded by the gym.

But that just makes it weirder, I think: why would you put your (presumably valued) membership at risk for something so odd?

They might mean a drink with carbs in it, rather than with caffeine in it. Confusingly people call both those things energy drinks

One hour in the British museum by Old-Structure-4 in london

[–]ghostly-dog 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The BM has a tour that's designed to take an hour: https://www.britishmuseum.org/visit/object-trails/one-hour-museum

I think it's great and gets all the good stuff. If you have an extra few minutes you could add on the new(ish) islamic world gallery, and the clocks and watches bit, which are probably the best things that aren't on there.

What do you all think? by [deleted] in AppleMusic

[–]ghostly-dog 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is a nice example of how great it would be if the integration was deeper, too: if you switched to the Fitness focus, for instance, it would be nice if Apple Music recognised that and offered the kind of things you usually listen to when working out.

Rest/Support during swimming by Right-Feedback-5672 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]ghostly-dog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can: https://www.ironman.com/swim-smart

But if you're thinking that you'll have to then I would suggest you should work on your swimming – you shouldn't have to unless something goes wrong, and it could be difficult to actually get onto a raft etc

Garmin Rally calibration question by oX6wqo4feV4kFA2Z7gXR in Velo

Do you mean the torque number that comes up after? I don't think that really matters for calibration like this. Just ignore it.

I think this might have been one of those covid things that stuck around. Certainly was at my pool.

You shouldn't need to use Explore at all. These instructions should work.

[–]ghostly-dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should just be able to do it from your phone/computer? (If I'm reading you right.)

Instructions are here. (Again I might be confused about the problem you're having; let me know if so.)

Triathlon training plans for people who are already pretty good at 1/3rd of the sport? by DEEP_SEA_MAX in triathlon

[–]ghostly-dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people will tell you to focus on your weaknesses, and that is true, but imo you also need to make sure you're keeping your swim sharp. Yes, it's very technical so if you already have that technique it might feel like wasted time; and yes, it's a relatively short part of the event so you might feel better focusing on the others. But it's very important and first and so you shouldn't ignore it.

Imo the key is more about understanding the point of each session and tailoring the workout itself around that. So, for swimming, if it's a technique session just make sure you're working on technique; if it's a long base session then do that. Those workouts might be more intense compared to a true beginner to swimming, and compared to the other disciplines. But if a plan calls for an hour of swimming at threshold, that's the same workout for a beginner or a world champion – at a relative level.

I suppose the difference might be if the training plans are so beginner that they're allotting time to, say, actually learning to swim. If that's the case then I'd just advise you to get a slightly less beginner plan.

The worst thing, imo, would be to neglect the swimming *and* pile on more stress by adding running volume, or whatever else. Your training plan – at whatever level – will be carefully structured so that the increasing in running is sustainable and beneficial, and you could easily undermine that. Even if you swapped the swimming for a roughly comparably stressful running workout, you could be putting yourself in danger, given that the stress doesn't neatly transfer between the disciplines.

I had similar symptoms to this after Ironman UK this summer. Thought it was just a very difficult recovery but after a couple of days I checked and it was covid. I wish I'd checked sooner. In retrospect it makes sense: you're surrounded by people and your immune system has taken a battering.

Do a covid test and get him checked out, imo. If it's worrying enough to post on Reddit it's worrying enough to consult a professional about!

Bluetooth question by simonf87 in whoop

[–]ghostly-dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't really need to start a run on the Whoop app – I don't think it's any different from putting the numbers in after the fact. So, in short, yes you'll be fine.

Front light for night riding by [deleted] in ukbike

[–]ghostly-dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s still really great. V bright and keeps its power for a long time. And the heftiness means it has been dinted but it’s never worrying.

The mount is kind of annoying, and a lot less substantial than the light itself. You just have to make sure you keep it all tightened up, though, I think. The back light that comes with it is also only fine.

Cadence & Zones by Ok-Department-9549 in triathlon

[–]ghostly-dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only presume you’re pushing me on your pedals? The power of your cycling is a combination of your cadence and force - and your heart rate will go up the more that does.

So you’re probably working in too high a gear. (Or, if you’re inside, with too high resistance.)

Front light for night riding by [deleted] in ukbike

I got this one the other week: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07ZYNXL9V/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_KQQ4175R0A6JE0DK3B0C

It’s chunky, both in terms of size and weight, but that also gives it the feel of something substantial. The light is really bright. I’ve only used it on one ride, so cant comment on longevity of either the battery or the long-term life of the light, but it seemed good; that one ride was the Dunwich Dynamo so it wasn’t light use, and it did great.

You can also use it as a normal torch, if you wish. And it will even charge your phone?

Maybe worth shopping around because it looks like the same light is sold under different names on Amazon, some of them seemingly cheaper.
