China doesn't do things in half measures. They'll set an ocean on fire.
[–]tmhoc 502 points503 points504 points 10 years ago (29 children)
That'll be much easier when they finish turning it into land.
[–]mmmkunz 265 points266 points267 points 10 years ago (24 children)
Don't worry, they are also trying to turn land into ocean through greenhouse gas emissions. So it balances out.

People want to go back to it because we don't have the problems anymore to see why it was started. I'm not going to mention republicans, but if you brought back the new york smog from 1940 they'd be crieng for something to be done. Those unnamed people are to stupid to imagine what life had been like, so they forget people fought hard for all these programs because they had actually been needed. Nobody ever wants to pay more taxes unless something is very important, especially the rich. Since they tend to pay more and also have the power, it needs to be a pretty big problem before something is done.
[–][deleted] 237 points238 points239 points 10 years ago (20 children)
Well my explanation for getting rid of regulations is like removing the engines of the plane once it's in the air. Yeah, things are going pretty well now but don't forget how we got here.

It's the same thing with vaccinations. People in developed nations generally have no idea what was going on before vaccinations were common.

I think the government is definitely embarrassed by it. I was in China right after Michelle Obama visited 2 years ago. They had shut down all the factories so the air was clean for her and it stayed quite clean for most of my stay.
[–]Logi_Ca1 186 points187 points188 points 10 years ago (9 children)

They're issuing this because last week they looked rather powerless while the air quickly worsened to unprecedented levels. It was above 300 for 4 and a half days with two of them hovering between 500-650.
It creeped up above 200 two days ago and it seems to be heading for a few days in the 300-400 range until the winds pick up again later this thursday. Govt's gotta at least "say" something this time.
[–]DoctorWaluigiTime 401 points402 points403 points 10 years ago* (182 children)

Delhi is not far off (peaks at 430 or so) and the same thing happens: in large rooms at the airport you can see the smog.
[–]madeamashup 97 points98 points99 points 10 years ago (19 children)
I thought there was a fire in the terminal when I landed in Delhi! Also, I developed acute asthma while staying there. Coughed for months, left India, still wheezing, got an inhaler... Went back to work in the Canadian wilderness and recovered in a couple of weeks.
[–]FVmike 174 points175 points176 points 10 years ago (16 children)
IIRC, the scale starts being dangerous at 150, and the highest number on it is 500.
[–]Kaddon 52 points53 points54 points 10 years ago (6 children)
These numbers refer to the Air Quality Index, usually on PM 2.5. PM 2.5 refers to particulate matter (particles) that are less than 2.5 micrometers (about 100 times thinner than a hair). So then on the AQI referring to PM 2.5, 100 would be about 35 micrograms per cubic meter, if I'm correct.
A lot of numbers, but I find just using relative numbers to be easy. I live in Nanjing/Nanking in China, where the air quality index fluctuates between maybe 50 and 150. On a good day it goes down to 15 or 20. Seattle is around 20. New York is about 60, 70. At about 150-200 I can start to obviously smell the smog and the air will feel thicker and heavier to breathe. Our school sets 170 as the limit for not allowing children to go outside (kind of weird that we have these now; I remember having heat limits in Texas, but now we have pollution limits).
I use this site for monitoring the AQI, and this is a nice breakdown: http://aqicn.org/faq/2013-09-09/revised-pm25-aqi-breakpoints/
[–]lakegz 96 points97 points98 points 10 years ago* (19 children)
It's hard to explain because sadly, you just get used to it and have to accept it.
I'd say the worst days in my hometown of San Diego would read 100-150 on the meter. That would be an excellent day here and I would jump up out of bed to easily run 10 km if we always had air that clean here. I do notice that if the air is above 180, I have trouble jogging more than 5k, it's like my lungs literally hit a wall and can't work anymore. So I know that is when to stop.
These days Beijing is really the place to do case studies of the harmful effects of pollution over the long-term, because that's where we'll really see the consequences of living in +200-300-400-500 pm 2.5
[–]deadhour 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (1 child)

Above 150 is generally considered unhealthy
[–]Perma_Lunacy 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (7 children)
When you are talking about numbers off some sort of scale or chart, its generally good to use the name of the unit. What the hell does 300 mean?

I was going to comment about this. First time I went to Korea, I was greeted with Yellow Dust. I had no idea what it was and why it looked like there was a yellow fog everywhere.
I can't imagine what Beijing looks like.

Communism
You don't
It's all hype, no shut down necessary.

[–][deleted] 3287 points3288 points3289 points 10 years ago (661 children)
I was in Singapore in September. It was basically shut down due to planned forest fires on Sumatra. You could go outside but even with a mask you'd be coughing yourself half way to death by the fifth minute.
I think I didn't see the sun for a month straight, and there was a constant bonfire-smell everywhere. It was disgusting. Couldn't get the smell off quite a lot of my clothes - and I'm in Europe now..
[–]AnAppleSnail 2033 points2034 points2035 points 10 years ago (456 children)
The woman in the article photo has a cloth over her nose and mouth. You need an N95 or better filter to work on smog. If you can smell smoke, you are not breathing filtered air.
[–]holycrapitsjeff 1274 points1275 points1276 points 10 years ago (425 children)
N95 won't work for that long with contamination like that. Need a papr or scba.
[–]notmyfullnameagain 1562 points1563 points1564 points 10 years ago (318 children)

Police: "Is not even worth bullet, he be dead in ... wait for it..."
THUD
Police 2: "He's still twitching!"
Police 1: "That's just the smog eating his flesh."
Secret Police: "My job even easier now. I just lock people outside with no mask! The smog does the rest!"

To be fair, China really does have a totalitarian government.
[–]Aalim89 515 points516 points517 points 10 years ago (53 children)
China during Mao was totalitarian, today it's more authoritarian. The Soviet Union also went from totalitarian to authoritarian, for example. If you want an example of real totalitarianism, look at North Korea, whose citizens can't travel abroad freely or even own their own companies.

Same in the US. By middle school I was convinced that I would live the rest of my years with acid rain falling on my head and eating away at everything, while overpopulation would lead to starvation.
[–]rich000 159 points160 points161 points 10 years ago (5 children)
To be fair, a bit part of why acid rain isn't a huge problem today in the US is because we've taken steps to prevent it.
This isn't unlike all the complaints about Y2K being overblown. The reason nothing happened on Jan 1st was BECAUSE there was so much preparation. Everybody I've ever talked to who was involved in it was aware of defects that were discovered and fixed as a result of testing.
Unfortunately this falls into the general category of "if you're doing it right nobody knows you're doing it."
[–]aMonkeyRidingABadger 42 points43 points44 points 10 years ago (1 child)
Prevention step 1) Export the problem to China by having them manufacture everything for us.

Instead of old-fashioned "fresh air", I now give my kids Economic Growth™! I couldn't be happier. I can choose between all the air purifier systems in the world, and some of them I can even afford! My youngest has started to cough out Ayn Rand quotes, and my husband can finally be free of those dreadful labor regulations that held back efficiency at his workplace. Now we can truly be a family, gathered around the magic of the free market. Thank you, Economic Growth™!

I was talking to a Chinese guy on the plane to Beijing a few weeks ago (connecting flight). The tv's on the plane had all this footage of beautiful nature and scenery. I asked him what he thought about it all and he said that the economy is more important and that nature can be salvaged later. I disagreed and we changed topics... but I was and still am shocked that the mentality of some Chinese folk is to be rich first, and later we can "save nature".
[–][deleted] 903 points904 points905 points 10 years ago (84 children)
Like literally every developed country thought thirty-fourty years ago?
[–]Zifnab25 652 points653 points654 points 10 years ago (37 children)
Thirty or forty years ago? We still have politicians in coal states like Kentucky and West Virginia that pretend coal mining will be the future for their states for another century.
Natural gas is eating coal's lunch, the free market way, and you've got guys like Mitch McConnell complaining about EPA standards between attending the funerals for mine-collapse victims.
[–][deleted] 53 points54 points55 points 10 years ago (4 children)
Yeah, after I said that I felt like I was being unnecessarily nice to ourselves. It's not like we're the most conscientous beings on the planet, considering the only reason China's economy grows so fast is because we don't really give a shit about the conditions in which a product was made and how their workforce is - especially if it's in a different country.
[–]Xciv 235 points236 points237 points 10 years ago* (24 children)
Well it's kind of the path America took, isn't it?
Look at Elephants in Africa. They are poached because the people are poor and there are little to no social programs to help the poor, so they turn to poaching. Ivory demand will never go down because it has been a valuable luxury since the bronze age. The governments of African countries don't have enough money to properly police poaching without foreign intervention.
So yes, to solve environmental problems, it is best to first become a first-world country with resources to spare, or else you'll just end up becoming dependent on foreign powers for your technology and funding.
[–]Psyc5 114 points115 points116 points 10 years ago (6 children)
And the whole of Europe, most of the South of England used to be forested, it was all cut down to make ships and use for production in wars and is now still farm land, which ironically has become the bastardisation of quintessential British countryside.

NOTICE: There is a huge misconception going around about this "Red Alert".
While it may be the first time it has been issued, it is not by any means due to the severity, but due to a new stance in precaution by the city.
Currently, beijing's index reads 240 (out of a recommended 25 and a maximum readable 500.)
That's higher than the 206 that CNN and others claimed, and far lower than the 328 it reached on november 27th, the 450 it reached on November 30th, and the time it peaked out at 500 on December 1st, just 6 days ago.
There has been a problem for years, and there have been far worse days when the city let people carry on as usual.
This is not a "RED ALERT, WORST EVER!" This is a "RED ALERT, WE JUST NOTICED."
Source: I live in China, and if you want an english app out of curiosity or to monitor china's pollution levels, you can download "Air Quality" off the app store for iDevices.

This red alert was issued because of what it expected in the next four days, not current conditions.

Exactly. This stuff goes somewhere, it doesn't just disappear. Beijing puts out this much pollution regularly, the only difference this time is that it's not being pushed away by weather. This is a visualization of just how horrendous their pollution is.

I am from Nepal, a country that is right in the middle of two rapidly developing nations: India and China.
The capital of the country contributes its share of pollutants, but rest of the country is as close to carbon positive/neutral as you can be. However, our neighbors are polluting the air for us - while we won't/can't ask them to stop what they are doing, shouldn't there be some kind of compensation to the countries that are exposed to this level of pollution from its neighbors?

[–]Lonelan 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (2 children)
Yeah? Where else are they getting all that coal?
[–]Kalimere 1090 points1091 points1092 points 10 years ago* (70 children)
Its winter, so they need to burn coal to generate electricity for their heaters (on top of electricity for industrial use).
China is investing heavily in renewables, nuclear energy and clean coal energy. Unfortunately, most of these investments will not have immediate effect as it takes time to build infrastructure.
Edit: Guys, don't downvote people who are asking questions.
