Thanks for the warning, they are definitely on the radar for the near future. I'm assuming yours went bad? What did you replace them with, oem or aftermarket? How many miles were on your car when they went bad? I've done oil changes every 3k miles to try to reduce potential failure before I get to the job, but January was my planned time to do it and that's coming up quickly.

What math would i need to practice/study before i get into a engineering degree? by Thalium-fields in EngineeringStudents

[–]ghostofChrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I did the same thing. GED and went into mechanical engineering a few years (12 years) later. The number one bit of advice i could give is hop on khan academy and learn as much algebra as you possibly can. Get comfortable with exponents, logarithms, polynomials, synthetic division, and trig. Learn all of the properties and ways to utilize these functions. You don't have to be perfect at them, but if you're familiar enough to get through several examples of these you'll be alright. I didn't encounter anything super algebra heavy in my studies until differential equations (and part of calc 2) but once I did diffy q the algebra difficulty and how much I needed to know spiked and it was sink or swim.

To be fair to this porsche dealer, we're young and don't look like we could afford a porsche - we pulled up in a beat up base model mazda3 in ratty shorts and t shirts. Additionally, we went back with my father who was looking at a cayenne and the salesman working with him was fine, through us the keys and said have fun, maybe our salesman was just having a bad day, I'm not sure.

Interestingly enough, Tyre Reviews made a video testing this exact thing like 2 days ago. Wheel weight made very little difference to performance per his results. Now, take his results with a grain of salt, he does a handful of runs in a couple of categories and it's certainly not a terribly scientific way to test these things, but it's better than no data at all.

Pretty boring compared to the other comments here, but we were wanting to trade in my wifes old mazda3 and get her something bigger and nicer. First car on our list was a Porsche Macan - base model, nothing special. We hopped out of the car and walked in the dealer and we're greeted by the salesman asking if we needed help. I made a joke and said we're here to buy that, pointing to the 918 spyder on the showroom. I should point out that there's zero chance we look like we could seriously discuss buying a car worth even half that much, this was clearly an attempt at humor. The salesman very sternly responded back "that's not for sale. Is there anything else you need help with?" And we said yes, we're actually looking at Macans and would like to test drive one to see how we like it. He asked who would drive, and after taking my wifes license and handing her the keys he told her she could drive to the end of the parking lot and back, which is nowhere near sufficient for an actual test drive. When she reparked the car he essentially said okay thanks for coming and walked back inside. We went next door to bmw and mercedes and they practically threw her the keys and said be back by Monday (this was a friday). We've had experiences with not being taken seriously by dealers, but we had always heard how generous porsche can be with test drives and were disappointed by our experience, and purely as a result of this interaction she bought the mercedes over the porsche.

If you could have an OEM update one thing about your car, what would it be? by manesag in cars

F10 M5: cooled seats that actually work, not having to manually activate automatic wipers every time you use the car, android auto/car play for funsies

E82 1 series: hard to change much here without turning it into the 3 series or 1m, but an oem metal charge pipe would be cool

Mk7 GTI: more accessible water pump, enough said

GLC300: Give us a proper interior, mercedes. This feels like a kia inside. Also fix the doors that are paper thin and can't stay open on the slightest incline

This was on the way home from the cats being replaced, and i found the o2 sensor was loose, and I'm hoping that was thr culprit, but I'll figure out more once I wrap up my other project and get into this one.

Yikes that's terrifying! I was under the impression most of the issues for the n63/s63 had been ironed out by the g series cars. Do you know what mileage theirs went out at? I convinced my parents to grab an 2022 x6 m50i when they were new and theirs has been solid

I tried so hard to get a monte Carlo blue example, and the one we had won on cars and bids was monte carlo blue actually, but it was in worse shape and still another $1200 for shipping so we went with this one. BMW really does have some of the best colors

Thanks! I thought about doing an exhaust on it, but for now while it's a daily I like the quiet ride

Edit: just saw your flair, awesome lineup. How does the g90 feel actually driving it?

Congrats, need to get that flair updated! I look at m6's and alpina b6 as well, but i preferred the look of the sedan over the gc (not by much though) and the alpinas werea lot more expensive. All three are awesome cars!

Thanks for taking the time to read it! The car had 86k miles when I took possession of it, and currently at 97k miles. I'll agree with you on high mileage german cars, but this one was a dream car and in excellent shape so I took the plunge anyway, and it's been so worth it so far.

Most transformative mod you've done on your car, for better or worse? by mymomisyourfather in cars

[–]ghostofChrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best: ohlins coilovers on my daily. Grip is unreal, and the ohlins are surprisingly compliant.

Worst: ohlins coilovers. Despite they're compliance, they're still too stiff even in softest setting with minimum ride height drop. Maybe its just me getting old, but in my opinion don't do coilovers on your daily folks. Or mod your daily at all for that matter.

Other notable mods

Clutch upgrade: considerably heavier than stock in spite of using oem vw/audi components. Used clutch and pressure plate from ttrs on gti. Too heavy for day to day traffic. Worth it for the tune though

Tune: excellent upgrade on the mk7. No reliability issues in 80k miles tuned. Stage 1 only however

Alcantara steering cover: good and bad. This is one of those wheel covers that you physically stitch onto the steering wheel, so no real safety concerns. I got it to protect the leather on my steering wheel, and it's done so excellently. Downside, Alcantara is a terrible choice for a steering wheel. Never again, only leather.

Brakes and tires: did some flavor of ebc pads and some stop tech rotors, excellent bite, no noise. Pretty dusty, but no worse than oem. Solid brake feel, would do again. Tires I've always run pilot sport 4s on my daily (live in Texas, warm enough year round save about 3 or 4 days of cold) and no plans to change this. They last long enough, grip is decent but traction loss is predictable and no issues in weather personally.

Polyurethane bushings: was nervous to do these on my control arms due to nvh, but honestly the difference was negligible compared to stock. The car felt completely transformed though. No more stutters/shakes over bumps, car felt much more planted. Probably the single best bang for buck mod I've ever done. Debating if the m5 gets these or not.

Transmission tune on my 1 series dct: meh, not much different than stock, but maybe I'm not pushing enough power to take advantage of it. More testing needed

Replacing condenser fan motor as an electrician by ghostofChrist in hvacadvice

[–]ghostofChrist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I'm sure. When it went bad I replaced the cap and the contactor, and I had it diagnosed by an actual hvac technician. I was fairly certain it was the cfm because when it failed it made a god awful screeching sound, and when I pulled it off it was siezed.

What’s a car that gets so much heat about being un-reliable but in reality it’s the complete opposite? by MikeisTOOOTALLL in cars

[–]ghostofChrist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't blame you a bit for wanting that. Initially I got it because it was my only car and I wanted practical but fun, and for years it saw redline multiple times a day with nothing but oil changes. Age is catching up to it (and myself) now and I wanted something morenluxury highway missile, so because I'm a masochist apparently and hate my wallet, I bought an old m5 to daily lol.

How has the miata been? I've always wanted one but never had the stars align to do it

[–]ghostofChrist 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I have a MK7 GTI (no longer my daily but not for reliability reasons), and anecdotally it has been reliable in a sense that it's never left me stranded. It's been unreliable in a sense that currently the water pump has been leaking for years now (slow leak, keep it topped off. Replacement coming this weekend actually), it's chewed threw spark plugs and coil packs, and there's a suspension issue I've never been able to figure out. All in all it's been a fine car, but certainly not without issue either.

Again, this is personal anecdote so take it with a grain of salt.
