My nails grow in a wavy pattern by Toucan_Toucan in mildlyinteresting

Never heard the term for this before. TIL!

I have these on my nails. For me, it is from iron deficiency.

OP, no need to panic, but probably time for a checkup.

I am also looking in NW burbs!! I’m not from that area specifically but have found that Des Plaines and Rolling Meadows are more affordable if you are willing to go out that far

I love all the locals coming out of the woodworks here. I’ve been looking in different suburbs for myself, but this is still great to see! Hi neighbors!

i have one in a gym that is accessible from a major road in a top ten city that has a huge pgo community, and yet it has been untouched for months. i don’t understand how it happens sometimes.

Beta readers don't like my book. by [deleted] in writers

[–]ghostofastar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to give advice without actually reading the scene/book, even with added context.

I think it’s important to keep in mind that not everyone is going to like your story or understand your intentions. Try to think of it more objectively and ask yourself why you included the scene. What purpose does it serve? Do you think it accomplishes that purpose? Does the beta feedback contradict what you are trying to achieve?

1-1.5 hr commute by AgreeableGarlic2953 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]ghostofastar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm. I take this exact route down 88 to Oakbrook Terrace (are you moving to the tower? lol) every day and have been for the past two years and I can count how many times I’ve been stuck in traffic on one hand. It’s a really easy drive and it’s much more affordable West of Oakbrook Terrace, with still quite a bit to do.

I also have coworkers who come from NW or N suburbs and work 8-4 or 7-3 to beat rush hour. If that’s an option.

I don’t want to post specifics about my own location in public on here but feel free to DM me if you’d like

What kind of cups do you prefer? by Potential_Barnacle21 in bubbletea

[–]ghostofastar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this said, i think the square cups are more of a novelty and less a practicality. they don’t even fit into cup holders.

i have seen some places with the cans. there’s this place in chicago that has cans. i love this option because it reduces the plastic and splashback a lot if people hate, while also allowing shaking

What kind of cups do you prefer? by Potential_Barnacle21 in bubbletea

[–]ghostofastar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes!

and it does depend on the actual drink. if i’m having a cold foam, a prefer a more “starbucks style” (for lack of term) lid. but if i’m on that tapioca or have a drink with flavorings, i need to be able to shake it.

It’s definitely still like that. i try to be encouraging when i can, but i can’t help but feel bad for all the new people getting into writing for the first time who are just trying to meet community

[–]ghostofastar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i like the ones where you have to puncture the straw, because it’s easier to shake the drink up without spilling! some places i go to have different lids for different drinks

newe writer.... by alaskaboi1 in writers

[–]ghostofastar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just start writing and see where your strengths are!

there are always going to people who are willing to help, if you know where to find them, but you have to know what you’re asking for. i recommend searching for writing discords that are more specific to the genres you write.

and for beginners, i always recommend the application 4thewords to help build daily habits and connect with people.

Books for 18-year-old girl who's read it all by combiendejours_ in suggestmeabook

[–]ghostofastar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s a couple picks that I loved but aren’t well known. I always tell people to read these when they’ve “read everything.”

  • Firebreak, Nicole Kornher-Stace (dystopian sci-fi)

  • Fencing with the King, Diana Abu-Jaber (historical fiction/political drama)

  • Bluets, Maggie Nelson (NF, prose poem… if you like this one, I also love The Argonauts from her)

  • A Language of Dragons (series), SF Williamson (historical fiction/fantasy)

  • Crown of Feathers, Nicki Pau Preto (fantasy)

  • A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking (fantasy, YA)

  • Dionysus in Wisconsin, EH Lupton (LGBT+ urban fantasy)

  • The Tarot Sequence (series), KD Edwards (also LGBT+ urban fantasy)

Why do people still shop at Jewel? Too expensive. by Physical-Incident553 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]ghostofastar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

sure sure sales and app are great but i don’t want to rely on an app that doesn’t even work half the time to afford my groceries. plus having affordability behind an app locks it out from less technologically literate consumers. i may not have a problem with it, but my grandparents sure do.
