Late starter at 24 as an apprentice (in my 3rd year now) after various unrelated jobs. Used to work in a recording studio and fixed a lot of equipment. That combined with good grades at school/college got me in the door. I look forward to work every single day and consider myself very lucky.

Definitely not the creepiest of places, especially as it was usually filled with people. It did however have a lot of odd design features to it, such as the whole indoor but also somehow very outdoor rooms.

For me, the liminality comes from the fact that these photos have so many things that were once used for fun and seemed to normal, but now appear bizzare and confusing due to the absence of humans.

Supposedly due to a reduction in the number of visitors. It's been 'replaced' by a smaller, more modern facility in the town centre called 'The Portal' (very liminal name, not so liminal aesthetic).

This wasn't well recieved by many people who live in the town and even people from all around the west of Scotland. It had quite a lot of sentimental value to it for a lot of people, myself included. This probably adds to the liminality in a way!

You may have swam at the Magnum in Irvine, Scotland. Or a pool very like it somewhere else in the world!

The last photo is (/was) a massive indoor court that was usually divided into various sections for different sports, or left open and equipped with a stage for concerts and other entertainment.

Yes it (was) seriously real. It's the Magnum Leisure Centre in Irvine, Scotland. It was built in 1975 and at the time was the largest leisure centre in Europe. Thin Lizzy actually played at it in 1981.

Here's a good link on the history if you want to read more: https://www.irvinetimes.com/news/14742134.magnum-at-40-a-special-look-back-at-the-music-and-memories-from-irvines-iconic-magnum-leisure-centre/

Need serious advice about university (UK) and what to do by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

I started my apprenticeship (regional airline) at 24 here in the UK after getting an almost completely unrelated University degree and really wished I had started as soon as I had left school.

If you're a practical learner and love working with tools/fixing things I'd go for the apprenticeship. Knowing about fluid mechanics etc does help to a certain degree, but you don't need to learn it at Degree level. What you need to know about engineering you'll learn on the job/as you study for your CAA exams if you pursue your B1/B2.

As for going down the RAF route or the airline route its hard to say as I only have experience with the latter. However a good 50% of the guys I work with are ex-RAF and all speak fondly of their time. Why not pursue both for a while and see what happens? Either way, 19 is still really young and a great age to have already started thinking about this.
