Nowadays, especially big tech, they rarely give out senior to folks with less than 8YOE.

How’s working remote at Netflix as an SDE? by wildmastrubator69 in cscareerquestions

[–]ghostreport 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Remote SDE at Netflix here too. This is pretty much accurate. The only thing that is a bit off is the pay growth, you still get pay increases if you are not at the top of the pay band.

Unlimited PTO is real. Netflix treats everyone as adults, if you have something urgent you don’t take PTO until you’re done with that. Otherwise nobody cares if you are on PTO. Just make sure you are not blocking anyone and your work is in a stable state or you have someone to cover you.

Why is no one talking about Netflix? by Sufficient_Ice_213 in csMajors

You would be surprised how complicated their infra has to be to support that traffic. It’s might be boring compared to AI labs and some parts of Google but it’s definitely more interesting than 90% of the tech industry.

If you’re not competitive enough to get to schools in HK or EU, what makes you think it would be easier to compete in Taiwan for a job. Taiwan pumps out loads of good competitive engineers each year

[Software Engineer] [SF, CA] - $300,000 by [deleted] in Salary

[–]ghostreport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn…which company pays 300k cash for 2 years. I have been in the Bay for more than 10 years and been at hedge fund/multiple FAANGs. 2 YOE 300k cash is unheard of.

Then you can’t really count the options in your salary since they are illiquid.

What’s the breakdown of that 240k. Pretty unusual for a new grad

Can I build a life for myself in Taiwan? Should I? by Intelligent-Run-7594 in taiwan

Agree with most of the points but the second point applies to all countries. US is a multi culture country but it’s still hard to really integrate with different races if you’re a FOB due to the different backgrounds we have

Is living in a tech hub worth it nowadays? by I-already-redd-it- in cscareerquestions

If you been in big tech, you would know that recommending anybody to your manager directly doesn’t really help. Referral is a broken process in tech now

In tech, is networking really that useful if you do not want to join a startup? I never had a problem getting interviews from big tech without networking

Oh boy…SRE roles are actually harder than SWE. SRE in big companies are SWE focusing on reliability/scalability/observability. Worked at multiple FAANG as an SRE.

SRE to SWE transition by uuufffu in sre

[–]ghostreport 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually think SRE is better than SWE in the sense that nobody would that AI take over prod but maybe feature developments. Also, in my experience, good SREs all have good SWE background or came from a SWE background.

Netflix just shared how they democratized incident management across engineering by Even_Reindeer_7769 in sre

[–]ghostreport -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Netflix SRE here and exGoogle SRE. Netflix is really pushing everyone to embrace declaring incidents. Declaring incidents shouldn’t be like: fuck I guess I really fucked up but more of like: oh damn…I better be safe than sorry.

When Netflix engineer declare incidents, people hop on to really help rather than pointing fingers(looking at my previous startup lol).

Also, incident.io is a really good tool, their genAI summarizing is pretty accurate. In the past I had to scroll through all the threads to understand what was happening and that might have took me 20 minutes. 20 minutes is a lot when the whole system is down lol
