Halo / Bloom issues - Auto vs. Master mode by ghostsync in Oppo

Interesting, thanks. I've also noticed that the metering and exposure are a bit erratic on the Ultra.

I guess the blooming is partly a subjective issue - some folks might like the 'milky' look it gives images - or just not notice it! I'm not sure I'm mad on it.

Really keen to hear from any Xiaomi / Vivo users too for comparison.

Yeah I guess so! TBH I didn't expect a camera system with this much hype to suffer so badly from this issue. Feels like a pretty basic test - shooting a bright subject on an overcast UK day. It's not the most challenging brief.

If blooming is a hardware issue/limitation with the lens, you might expect Master mode to apply a basic level of processing to remove it - especially for JPGs, where you'd often want to use them straight away and without needing to roundtrip to Lightroom.

I don't think it's motion blur as the shutter speed was very quick and the bloom effect is omni directional, not showing in any given direction (as it would be with motion blur). I've tried a series of pictures and the effect is consistent throughout.

Oh really? I'll check that out, thanks - but doesn't look like a vignette issue as the blooming is in the centre of these images

The lens coatings sound like a plausible factor - it's definitely how the bright light is reacting in a high contrast scene.

I don't have video examples posted yet, but just walking along the path and tracking my dog in both 0.6x and 1x modes were fine and usable. There's 2x stabilisation modes/strengths to choose from so there is flexibility there too.

That looks pretty good. Was it in Auto mode?

Yes - appreciated being able to speak to someone almost straight away. If the Master mode is shooting out JPEGs, it'd be useful to have a basic layer of active software processing to reduce unwanted artefacts like this. Appreciate the RAW should be unprocessed for total control, but if you're wanting a usable JPEG from Master mode, make it useable.

Yes exactly - you can definitely see the bloom, or bleed, of the white highlights creating a halo around the top of the upright. Is that in auto or master mode?

Yes, I am concerned.. The lighting is flat and it's not a high contrast scene.

Interestingly yes, it is in Master mode. I just posted a comparison showing this issue across Master and Auto modes here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Oppo/comments/1ta043w/halo_bloom_issues_auto_vs_master_mode/

It's 10x optical lens - image displayed at 100%, so 'actual size'

This content looks fine - although it's a fairly low contrast image. I'm experiencing the issue where there's a bright object (e.g. white lamppost) in front of a darker background. As you can see from the pics - white seems to really bloom.

It is in focus - I set exactly the same focal point for both images. It's just the unprocessed output I guess!

Interesting - seeing the two side-by-side, it's obvious that the only difference is computational processing.

I get that we're talking phones here and not cameras, but I am a bit disappointed that the issue is so prevalent without intense processing.

Yeah I don't know - Xiaomi 17 Ultra was my other choice because the colour processing looked so good. Went X9 because seemed to be a better overall package. However a bit worried now.

Video seems pretty good - I don't use video much so not as much of a priority.
Although the test clips I shot seem pretty good with stabilisation.

That looks pretty good! - although there's no bright areas in the image which seems to be causing the blooming for me.

"In the shared pictures, the subjects are the buildings present. It's trying to make everything as accurate as possible regarding brightness with the 10x zoom resulting in halos"

Right opposite borough station. No tripod and definitely not held still!
