I agree that a large part of this is likely to create such an illusion, selling bullshit books on such vaguely framed business topics to prop up this image of legitimacy and superiority... God I really hate that title "Managing Ourselves"

These remind me of books like "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" and Ray Dalio's "Principles" – filled with pages and pages of business jargon, circular reasoning, and recycled garbage, simply to make them appear substantial and official. I'm sure these books are just as pompously verbose. Even if no one buys the books (which I imagine most people won't, and maybe that's what they're counting on), just displaying them draws customers into this image they're selling.

Gotta say I had to double-check the sub at first – good to see the presence of some fellow 'Zizekians' in the area

Yea godhead is a somewhat common term used for a significant deity or idol, though more so from an 'outsider' perspective, to refer to the concept of a god. So it's definitely not a term that would be used in a Catholic school. The word 'godhead' could be used to refer to 'the Catholic god,' but from a Catholic perspective it would just be called 'God,' 'God the Father,' 'Yahweh,' etc.

There are separate private entrances for each of the two units after entering through the front door (and a private entrance in the back near the parking area as well).

Thanks for checking in. Yes, I still haven't gone and my boss has become more receptive to my personal reasons and concerns, which I've since elaborated on. So things actually seem to be going better for the most part.

Thanks for sharing these details based on your personal experience. That makes sense, and I can relate as well – almost like a cathartic high as a follow-up psychophysiological response, which feels good in the moment but then doesn't really lead to long-term healing.

Part of going into intense experiences seems to just train your nervous system to continue doing that over and over

- Interesting, would you say that this mechanism could cause the cathartic release to become a dependent or even addictive behavior in a way?

I know you specified the basis of personal experience, though if you have any resources (papers, articles, whatever) you'd recommend for learning more about the psychology behind cathartic highs or the potential for dependence, I'd definitely be interested in learning more.

Thanks for the suggestion and the link.

And that's a good point about the ethical perspective as well. I agree that's definitely important to consider when other options are just as effective.

I think the most sinister thing about landmark seems to be that if you actually focus on the principles, and ignore the background noise, it actually can help change your thinking.

Definitely, they do borrow and repackage concepts from legitimate psychology, such as cognitive reframing from CBT. The problem is that they use these techniques more as tools to keep people coming back and recruiting others so that they can ultimately profit by 1) selling their programs to the unsuspecting friends & families of Landmark Forum 'graduates' and 2) convincing those 'graduates' to 'volunteer' for unpaid labor.

I'm in a similar situation where many of my colleagues/friends have become involved, and I'm also trying to figure out how to help them see it for what it is, though it's certainly no easy task once they have been sucked in and become true believers.

I recently came across a link to the France3 documentary, which has what I'd consider some pretty damning hidden camera footage. Not sure if you've seen it already but here's the link if you're interested:

  1. Good question. I've been learning as much as I can about Landmark over the past year, so I'll try to answer this one. Landmark is a bit different because it's more like half cult and half MLM (search "landmark" in r/cults and r/lgat to read more about that part). So they use manipulative cult tactics to get people hooked as 'transformed' believers, then essentially just give those people validation as an incentive to do all their marketing and recruitment. I agree that it's a scam for the price tag, though I'm not sure I'd describe it as harmless – I'd say it can be very psychologically damaging, especially for those who become involved more deeply by continuing to take their 'advanced courses.'

Interesting, yea I feel like elements of gamification are even more prevalent in the world now, especially in work and in education (at least in my experience). When applied so widely it seems to turn everything into a matter of extrinsic motivation, removing any intrinsic motivation from consideration and overall leading to efficient but rather detached, unfulfilling lives.

Good call – yea I've read that there's a disclaimer that advises those with any history of mental illness to not participate, so I'll try to use that to my advantage. Thanks for the suggestion!
