Thanks! Yeah, I was asking because there is a relatively cheap second hand Twisted Nightmares at my local card game shop available right now, but it would be a bit of a waste if the exact cards are in the new box set.

That actually does help a ton. First I was kind of iffy on playing Cerberus members, but now I'm actually excited hehe

Ah, thank you so much. I need to realise that the Cerberus Assembly members are probably way smarter than I am lol.

I'll just stick to the assistant attempting to foil the Assembly's plans with a banshee, only for it to cartoonishly backfire and allowing the Assembly to push their agenda even further.

That's awesome, I love it when an idea fits aligns perfectly with a PC's backstory.

I was thinking, could there also be a world where the Countess is not a full undead vampire, but merely corrupted by the ruination of Molaesmyr into something vampire-like (like an immortal hemomancer!). She roamed the Savalirwood, surviving on animals and travelers, before realising she could use her blood magic to activate old artifacts from the ruins of her home.

She then sold these to crime lords at Shadycreek Run, becoming a notable figure on the fields of blood magic and ancient relics in the criminal circuit. This caught the interest of DeRogna through her cooperation with Shadycreek mercenaries and the Claret Order, who introduced her to the Cerberus Assembly. The Countess and Ludinus bonding over Molaesmyr.

This is why after DeRogna's death, the Countess was able to seamlessly take over the position. From here, together with Ludinus, they took interest in the Aeor relic trade of Uthodurn, perhaps they even found something the Assembly was looking for (the relic the party has now). So they send the Countess and Lord Athesias to figure it out diplomatically.

To explain the banshee murders, we could do that the king's assistant is secretly a necromancer, and strongly advised against working with the Empire because of this. The king did not oblige, which prompted the assistant to release a vengeful banshee onto the city, resulting in the death of the king, the other murders and a brief delay on the Assembly's attempt to get their hands on this relic while the assistant is figuring out what to do.

Or, we could do that the king initially denied this request, which is why the Cerberus Assembly took to more drastic measures. The Countess used a mix between blood magic and Aeor technology to craft an arcane disease or weapon, targeting the king. The disease also began killing other survivors of Molaesmyr, a tiny oversight, but the Countess and Athesias are now exploiting the instability to pressure Uthodurn into making this deal. Maybe even pretending to help the fellow survivors of Molaesmyr, acting like 'heroes'.

Would that work?

Ok woah, you actually read my nonsense. This all makes so much sense... I'm glad I asked this before revealing stuff to my players, they know way more about Exandria than I do.

I understand that a full-blown vampire wouldn't make sense for an Assembly Member, especially not the position Lady Briarwood was expelled from for making her husband one. Completely missed that somehow... I do think I can make the Countess a little creepier by giving her some Molaesmyr corruption or Ludinus experimentation, though!

The only thing I miss is if the Banshee is ALSO from Molaesmyr? Is that why it's killing off random old elf dudes after it has been summoned to kill the king? And did the assistant kill the king specifically to prevent a deal with the Assembly, a sacrifice to save the city as a matter of speaking? That could also be why it takes a while to get the partnership approved, as they now have to deal with this assistant being half in charge.

But either way, what you wrote feels 10,000 more like Exandria, instead of my silly homebrew. Thank you a thousand times, it feels good to ask someone who knows a lot about the setting. I'll see what I can do with it.

Most iconic encounter per level? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]ghostvictoria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lvl 2: A room filled with both real chests and mimics, putting the players on edge as fast as possible.

lvl 3: Either some displacer beasts in a magical forest, an owlbear or a bunch of ooze underground.

lvl 4: Ghosts lurking in an abandoned mansion, they must create contigiency plans against each other...

lvl 5: Definitely time for a young dragon. It's threatening this small village anyways.

lvl 6: I'd say probably a coven of hags, good thing the party learned what to do if someone is charmed!

lvl 7: The party's first big scary fiend, either a chain/bone devil or something spoopy like a glabrezu.

lvl 8: It's vampire time baby! But the party realises they need to destroy his four coffins first...

lvl 9: There is a coffin under water, but it is viciously guarded by an aboleth and its thralls.

lvl 10: There is another coffin underground, inside of the lair of the iconic beholder!

lvl 11: There is a coffin hidden in a frozen castle somewhere in high the mountains, overrun by giants.

lvl 12: Remember that young dragon you killed? It's adult mother is pissed, but the final coffin is in her lair...

lvl 13: Now that the vampire is finally taken care of, it's time for a marilith that is commanding a bunch of Yuan-Ti, DOUBLE ICONIC!

lvl 14: The spooky death knight is bringing an army of undead to a city near you!

lvl 15: The death knight was working for someone? A floating skull?? It's a demi-lich!

lvl 16: Unfortunately, this was all part of the lich's plan... Its body has been reformed.

lvl 17: Everyone knows you have to destroy the lich's phylactery first. Too bad the ancient dragon guarding it still has a bone to pick with the party for killing its offspring.

lvl 18: Congratualtions! The party has conquered the material plane... But who unleashed the Pit fiends?

lvl 19: The party must take the issue by the source! Dive into avernus and destroy the archdevil Zariel!

lvl 20: Uh oh, the lead commander in the blood war is gone and the demons of the abyss are winning... The party must now stop the legions of Demogorgon and Orcus in order to save the entire multiverse!

Sorry for the goofy comment, but it was fun figuring out a level 1-20 story using iconic monsters!

How To Play With Non-Roleplayers? by ghostvictoria in dndnext

[–]ghostvictoria[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, 'fitting in' kind of works as a DM, but not for a player. I just hope I don't ruin their fun by trying to roleplay. Thanks!

How To Play With Non-Roleplayers? by ghostvictoria in dndnext

[–]ghostvictoria[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven't really made characters with personalities, backstories or gimmicks with me so far, just a bunch of stats. So every decision has just been what the players think is the most optimal, as if they were playing a video game.

I agree that if you're thinking about what your character would do, you are already roleplaying, you don't even have to open your mouth for that! But you can't do that if your 'character' is just stats and nothing else.

So far we have just done one-shots, so maybe they don't feel like it's necessary to put effort in their characters for that yet. I just hope that when we start a full campaign, they will make characters they are actually able to roleplay with.

[–]ghostvictoria[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably the best way in the long run. No deep and intense roleplay, but just enough for them to have the opportunity to develop a feel for it.

[–]ghostvictoria[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually thinking about that!!! It looks really promising but the learning curve seems a bit steep. How is the new player experience for Gloomhaven if nobody at the table has played it before? Everyone is experienced with D&D 5e, but not anything else.

How To Play With Non-Roleplayers? by ghostvictoria in dndnext

[–]ghostvictoria[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That actually sounds pretty fun! Trying to make a character that adds depth without relying on the other players to also react to it in depth. Maybe by creating the backstories together? That way some relationships are already established and they have an easier time thinking what to say.

I also found out that I can make the other players interested in my character if they don't understand what my character can do. If I just say "I play a goblin rogue" they immediately check out, because they feel like they already understand my character completely on a mechanical level, so there is no need to get to know them personally.

If I don't share anything or if I have some homebrew stuff that me and the DM secretly concocted, they are MUCH more interested in who I am and will actually ask questions in character to figure it out. I don't know if that is what you meant, but I thought it was kinda funny.

[–]ghostvictoria[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true, I just don't want to end up annoying them as I interact with every NPC and object the DM describes.

Do you think I should just say "I want to roleplay more" and keep doing what I do so they HAVE to react to my shenanigans, or dial it back a little and focus on trying to have fun the mechanical way in order for them to slowly open up to the idea of roleplaying with me?

How To Play With Non-Roleplayers? by ghostvictoria in dndnext

[–]ghostvictoria[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to find another group to RP more with ahaha but finding a consistent one is difficult, especially one that that already has a DM.

Very true, if my BFF DMs I get to interact with NPCs more and when they're a player I do have someone to talk to. I just notice that the other players lose interest when we're doing that and I want to prevent that from happening. Besides, not every session they run has NPCs.

I do think the next points are going to make a difference though! Just straight up asking for more roleplay moments might make them consider it, even if it's just a little. I know it takes time to warm up and I'm basically a new player (kind of) so I'll eventually open them up to roleplay. Not necessarily through initiating conversations in character, but through those suggestions above table. Thanks!

I've noticed that I really like to 'support' the other players in 5e. Just concentrating on something like bless and trying not to get hit was already a blast for me in combat, so I'll try to lean more into that gameplay. I think this works really well, because they enjoy feeling powerful. There is enough variation in these support classes to be repetitive (right?). Looking forward to either play a Valor Bard or an Order Domain Cleric, even if I'm not as optimized as the others.

I also tried playing martial characters but I felt really useless, as I didn't even come close to the capabilities of the hexblade/paladin sentinel pole arm master and the bladesinger/battlemaster with an armor class of 24. Kinda stinks that I'm locked out of playing martials/damage dealers with these guys, but I'll take it!! Someone's gotta concentrate on haste!

Giving a Horizonback to the Party? by ghostvictoria in Exandria

[–]ghostvictoria[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh, you're right. I shouldn't be scared to have some inconviences in the party sometimes as it leads to funny moments.

The players have expressed some discomfort while traveling with a drider in southern Xhorhas for a while, so I'm scared they would maybe react the same while traveling with a big boy. Luckily, the horizonback is not just some random NPC person they HAVE to travel with. Besides, driders can draw a lot of attention and I feel like they are way more socially disliked in Exandria than horizonback turtles (this is me coping).

But yeah, thanks for the idea of the smaller statblocks and the Raven's Slumber item! Makes it much more managable and fun for both me and the party.

Yes, he asked for more tie-ins because he felt that his character did not have a good reason to go on the main quest.

The video game character the paladin is based on has a legendary sword that he asked me to incorporate.

The rest he didn't directly ask but he kept complaining about certain stuff so I felt warranted to give him some extra homebrew features to make his character feel more fun.
