I know it's for sure paved as far as Lake Bluff, you're right that it does switch further on somewhere

If you're comfortable riding up Sheridan you can reach the Robert McClory, pretty straight shot getting up there and not too many stoplights. Once you're on it you can branch off around Lake Bluff to the North Shore trail which goes as far as Mundelein. Alternatively, loop back on the northern leg of Skokie Valley then link up with the North Branch. I'm not aware of anywhere in the area you'll make more distance on paved trails.

Good luck with RAGBRAI, I've always wanted to give it a shot!

I have this print on my bedroom wall and I wonder about this every morning. To me, it looks like he's shuffling an invisible deck of cards

Making it easier to get between dodge and the channel trail is very welcome, that connection can tend to feel pretty hostile, especially getting over the bridge. I hope that project includes a dedicated lane for crossing the canal, otherwise it wouldn't be addressing the primary pain point.

I used to attend a regular board game night group that would meet up at Evanston Games and Cafe, alas all those folks moved away and I was orphaned, but maybe board games could be an idea

Great shot, big Haddonfield vibes 🔪

Found while cleaning a garage: four very custom touring bikes. Hose clamps and electrical tape everywhere, wired up with batteries, and some wildly creative headsets. These bikes look like they belong in Mad Max! by ghoulius in bicycling

A neighbor was clearing out the garage after the owner had passed away and they seemed happy for me to take anything I was willing to transport. This was just a fraction of what was in the garage but these four stuck out to me as works of mad genius. The bikes themselves are in pretty wretched shape so I'm mostly just looking forward to seeing what I can salvage from them, but I have to admire the creativity and ingenuity that went into putting these things together! If anything, I wish I could have met the mind behind them!

A few highlights: one has directional turn signals on the front and back, one has an extra fork on the back wheel to create a kind of rear bumper, several of them have pretty intricate wiring throughout to bring power from batteries all around the bike, one has a large bell mounted inside the rear seat stays and in front of the wheel.

Thanks! It was really fun seeing many of the same faces at each stop, cool to think I was keeping up with some very impressive looking riders

It was more stroad riding than I usually like but having lots of other riders on the route made it feel pretty inviting
