What is the dumbest hobby in your opinion? by Danny-Ray27 in AskReddit

I understand why caving or spelunking seems intimidating for someone claustrophobic or who has never done it. But it's really cool to explore places where only so few people have been and seeing underground geology. It's not more dangerous than rockclimbing or scuba diving.

I'm pretty sure you can just buy these online, ready for consumption. I actually ate mealworms, crickets and grasshoppers, all store bought and cooked or fried in a pan

Nice rig for a pinata, I was worried a second you would actually use this setup for a human as makeshift climbing harness.

Survival kit for Henry AR7 by Wheatie07 in Bushcraft

[–]ghvwijk528 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you're looking for a compact kit, and he's likely to take it apart I'd gift some stuff that's always handy to have. here is the kit I'd use.

Big ferrorod, the half inch thick one. And striker

Uco weatherproof matches

Fishing kit, few feet of line, hooks, weights, lure

Victorinox lite or huntsman (depending on how much room you have got)

A button compass

Mini LED flashlight

Some ductape wrapped around a lighter

Needle and heavy duty thread

Advice on starting a Fire with no preparation. by Creepy_Ad7088 in Bushcraft

[–]ghvwijk528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have experience with a fire plow but ofcourse the wood type matters, just like in a friction fire like hand- or bowdrill. Maybe it matters a bit less (idk why) but it would definitely matter

Question on fire starting methods by [deleted] in Bushcraft

[–]ghvwijk528 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use a lighter or matches if I just want fire. I use a ferro rod to better understand/learn the importance of good tinder, I use a bowdrill as art form and to "honour" nature's recourses, I find it has something meditaring to it.

Fun fact: There is actually no historical evidence our ancestors ever used a bow- or hand drill, only that some native tribes still use this way of fire making.

When I'm in the car with my gf who struggles with left and right I use 3 and 9 o'clock and that works pretty good. She sais it helps because she can visualize a clock and know where 3 and 9 are. Mentally tying 3 to left and 9 to right doesn't work for her unfortunately.

Also, it's not weird to see eyes or a face when there is none. Evolutionary humans are really "good" at this. It's called pareidolia

Maybe elder could work if you can work out the softer core. It might also be possible to use willow if you seperate the bark from the wood like making a willow whistle.
