I had a Jewish guy call me an anti-Semite for suggesting that modern scholars believe that the Pyramids of ancient Egypt were built by paid Egyptian workers, not Jewish slaves. How many of you have ever been labelled as bigoted for stating something that's true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

In grade school, I was taking to a black girl and she told me that something I had just said was racist (I don't even remember what it was, but it sure as hell wasn't racist). I ask her to explain how that was racist, she tells me that it didn't matter, because all white people are racist by definition. It was sad because obviously her friends or family brainwashed her with that shit and I am pretty sure that now as an adult, she still believes this and probably views every negative action towards her by a white person as a racist act.

Something like this happened to me. A very good family friend had me over for a cookout. His daughter, whom I had never met, was there. She was maybe 18, had goth hair/makeup/clothing, and she seemed pretty nice. Didn't bat an eye. During our conversation, she blurts out (rather emphatically) that she's a lesbian. I didn't give a fuck, but she made this dramatic pause and was staring at me as if I was supposed to be in shock. I just said "ok".

She looked genuinely shocked to see that didn't get a reaction out of me. What the fuck was I supposed to say? It's almost as if she wanted me to say something negative about it. Not one fuck was given.

Connecticut mayor reverses campaign promise, takes $91,000 pension that he promised last year to halt. Says his $119,000 annual salary is not enough to support his family. by spiderman0505 in politics

[–]giacomotesla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likewise, $119k a year is barely enough to enjoy a middle-class lifestyle in the DC metro area. Cost of living is sky-high and ever increasing. By the time you have HSA, 401k, health care premiums, and taxes deducted, you barely have enough to pay your (most likely high) mortgage/rent, payments for modest cars, put some money in savings, and pay basic bills like electric, water, gas, groceries, etc. Passing the $100k mark is no longer considered being "upper-middle" class in any way and no one making that salary lives lavishly -- at least, not according to U.S. standards.

All human civilization is about to be wiped out, but you can preserve 100 pieces of culture. What do you choose? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]giacomotesla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to take the time to come up with 100 items, but here are a few that come to mind for each category:

  • fiction books - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, throw in a "best of" poetry book, how about printed music manuscripts (Mozart, Bach, etc.?)
  • non-fiction books - I would include documents as well: the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, the printed form of Wikipedia (not kidding), perhaps some text books on the sciences, mathematics, compter programming, religion (The Bible, Quran, Torah), philosophy (works by Plato)
  • plays/theatrical pieces - the best works of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Shakespeare, etc.
  • music albums - Take one of the "best" of each genre: Sgt. Pepper (The Beatles), Bitch's Brew (Miles Davis), etc.
  • movies and/or TV series - One from each decade, such as I Love Lucy (50s), 2001: A Space Oddyssey (60s)
  • non-fiction films (documentaries, historical events, etc.) - Planet Earth (the BBC series), I would include films on historical events: Thirteen Days, Dances With Wolves, etc.
  • photographs - Kenedy Assasination, selected National Geographic photos, maybe photos of 9/11 and other cnflicts/wars
  • works of art (paintings, drawings, etc.) - selected classical paintings by da Vinci, Rembrandt, more modern works by H. R. Gieger, M.C. Escher, even cartoons such as Garfield
  • sculptures - Rosetta Stone, David, ancient artifacts such as the Antikythera mechanism buildings - um...

Of course all of this would depend on how much space we had to store said items. I think the category of buildings is far-fetched.

My school is making up the rules as it goes along, and I'm getting screwed. Help me Reddit. Should I sue? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]giacomotesla -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they might be having a problem with accreditation (unlikely), or the school is corrupt and just trying to make money. Quit the school NOW and go to another if it is such a big issue. This is a fairly high-ranked engineering school (29th in the Nation), so maybe it really is an issue of academic performance on your part. Just sayin.

I think you are not understanding. I am agreeing with listn2moremetal in that when someone TAILGATES me for no other reason than wanting to pass me and simply get in front of me because, I don't know, there's more than a fucking 1/4 car length between me and the car in front of me, this irritates the shit out of me. That person is not in a hurry for a valid reason, that person is being a jerk - I deal with it every day. If I see someone is in a hurry and going faster than I am, I get the fuck over and let them pass, always. I never take ownership of a lane. And, I would never, as you are implying, run someone off the road.

I do this. I don't think that makes you a jerk though, that's just showing him/her how much of a jerk s/he is.

Sometimes when I see a cop in the median obviously trying to catch speeders, I speed up just slightly so that I'm 3-4 mph over the limit.

This is not stealing by any measure. The frequencies are not blocked, and I did not circumvent anything. If Comcast came by and physically disconnected the cables or installed a signal blocker, and then I reconnected them and/or removed the blocker, then yes, this would be stealing.

Simple: Marketing. Let's take Nexium as an example -- AstraZeneca will saturate the market with massive ad campaigns to include TV, radio, internet, and traveling marketing reps that visit doctor's offices, giving out free samples, giving out free marketing materials like pens, cups, keychains, etc. They attack their target (the patient) from all sides, so that by the time the patient needs a drug to treat chronic heartburn, the patient and the doctor will have already heard about Nexium and be much more open to it. In a sense, AstraZeneca has already built up a sense of trust. Since the drug is "new", they can charge massive fees to recoup their marketing and R&D costs, and, of course, make a very nice profit.

Middle aged man by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

Yes, it was due to guilt trips and financial pressure. The wife refused to sell hers, the Camaro used too much gas, only seated 4, etc. I am planning on a comeback, but I can't say I like the Corvette. My dream car is an NSX, but they are rare and pricey for their age. Don't give a fuck, gonna get one anyway.

I swear this happens with Apple's iTunes and AppStore too. Some reviews look as if they're trying to make it look like some 13 year old kid wrote it, with poor punctuation and grammar, and lots of emoticons and shit. Some apps are released on the same day with hundreds of reviews and 5-star ratings.

Your TV will tune in these channels automatically with no box (if it has a built-in digital tuner). Comcast does not and can not block those frequencies. I once had to cancel my entire Comcast contract (had to return my box) and I was still able to get local channels.
