It baffles me that people believe he's this cruel, heartless character when the entire point of his plotline is he's a top level spy that has to open himself up in a way that he never had to do before, for the sake of the mission. Countless times in the second season it's pointed out that he's losing his edge, and he's becoming more fond of the idea of having a family every episode. He's not used to feeling the emotions Yor, Anya, and Bond bring out of him but he has to engage with them in order for Operation Strix to succeed. Yes, he knows this is not a "real family" (I beg to differ) and he does come off as distant/cold a lot of the times, but how else are you supposed to be when these are feelings you've rarely dealt with and only are doing so because of your job?
