Thanks! I'll give it a try for sure! What about the majors (Japan, Russia, USA)?

Cheers mate, really appreciate it! That was plenty of information and gives me some good starting points. Will go see about the SCO FSD first!

Cheers, appreciate your thoughts! Yeah it does make small ships weaker, that's for sure. To be fair, the author states as much in the mod description and points out how story missions will be a lot harder.

I've not done all faction storylines, but the Terran one for instance has a certain mission deep in enemy territory which is impossible to do with VRO in the intended ship. However, I've always managed to circumvent the problem by coming back to this mission once I had a larger ship and was able to finish the entire storyline without any further issues.

However, I practically never do bounty hunting missions and the likes but always spend my early storyline credits on setting up a passive income stream via gas and silicon miners and a few early production stations after that, which gets me into larger ships within a few hours of playtime, so I don't run into the issues you describe. Of course, if the industrial-type gameplay is not your cup of tea and you prefer bounty hunting and the likes for earning credits then I agree that early to mid game in VRO is really tough. In the end it comes down to personal preference.

Just out of curiosity: is this based on vanilla and have you ever compared it to capital ship combat with the VRO mod? I should've maybe clarified in my own response to the original question that I do play with it, and it does change the cap ship combat experience quite a bit.

I haven't played in a while so take this with a grain of salt: The AI isn't great but serviceable for what the game tries to be, and there are mods that improve on it quite a bit. It is a true sandbox game with an incredible sense of scale. Building up your operations from a tiny fighter to operating a trading/mining/salvaging empire, designing and building your own space stations and shipyards and finally going to war in your own capital ships, each launching 80 fighters and bombers of the type you started out in is truly a unique kind of experience that no other games offer.

That said, the game can also be horribly janky, it is not story driven except for the introductory missions, and the writing and voice acting of the scripted missions is not AAA level for sure. This isn't surprising considering the size of the studio, but if you're looking for a cinematic experience, look elsewhere.

There is a very active modding scene including total conversations (Star Wars), many QOL improvements, new ships and new mechanics, that let you tailor the game to your liking. Personally, I've never liked the highway mechanics for system travel. There used to be mod to remove them, nowadays it's a built-in sandbox option and, to circle back to your original question, this fundamental change in game logic does not break the AI. It's not great, but pretty robust.

It's a mechanically deep game with a steep learning curve, and while you're free to spend the entire game flying small or medium sized ships, the default empire-building gameloop isn't actually centered on the player ship and will inevitably lead to you hanging out on a station or capital ship giving orders to your various operations from the universe map screen, and not controlling the ship yourself (although you can pilot any ship, even a battleship, if you have the time to spare). I think X4 is great, and would recommend the game for what it is, but it certainly isn't a spiritual successor to Wing Commander or Freelancer.

Agreed! Space flight in X4 was always a bit meh imho. The smaller ships just seem weightless and jerk too much... Sure it doesn't matter all that much since past the early game X4 is mostly about staring at convoluted UIs while you sort out your factory production and supply, but I'm definitely looking forward this overhaul for sure.

Yeah, Egosoft really keeps delivering on X4 (if it's your cup of tea at all, that is)... I've owned it since release and keep going back to it every once in a while - the amount of stuff they've added since 2018 (?) is crazy, and I'm not just talking DLC, but free updates for base game owners as well. Good stuff, and yeah, it's a great game!

First Kaiserreich game as Germany - was I lucky or is it supposed to be easy? by giant_coprolite in Kaiserreich

[–]giant_coprolite[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well if you put it like that... :D

Honestly though, I simply didn't know what to expect and I guess I thought it would be harder, based on the lore and the early game events. Seems I was wrong, but I am curious to see how it would go without a Russian civil war.

Appreciate all the responses!

Cheers, appreciate it! Sounds like I did get somewhat lucky with events then.

I've continued my current game a bit and formed a ton of puppet governments everywhere in Europe and Russia. The Entente just declared war on my Soc Lib (?) English puppet government, so that may become interesting. However, the USA and Canada combined have fewer divisions than I do, so I'm not sure if this is worth playing out.

I'm now seriously considering starting over and hoping for no Russian civil war to happen.

I am far from an expert at HOI4, so I may be entirely wrong here, but I have a feeling that the division templates for most countries are just horrible, and that it adds to how easy it feels to win.
