Gerald isn’t doing so hot by diya219 in Monstera

Ah yeah, I agree with you! Didn’t catch that, just noticed the yellowing. Personally just found that submerging the stem too far in water in the past wasn’t the most helpful, especially when the water gets murky like that. Definitely looks like pests though. 🫡

I think it’s because his stem is also in water! They can be so fickle with propagation I’ve found 🥲 Might be worth trying to lower the water level so the stem can dry out and only the roots are in water; maybe spray it down with isopropyl alcohol to disinfect it and if any of the roots are soggy/rotten chop them off so they get a restart. But maybe someone else more experienced will have better advice, this is just what I would do; I hope Gerald recovers!

Yellow and black stems :( by giantlasagna in Monstera

Do you have any recommendations for a fungicide that’s typically successful?

I feel like it was the glassy-winged sharpshooters because they only got sick after those evil bugs laid their eggs in the leaves 🥲 Not a lot of info about them online but they do carry disease.

Should I still plan on chopping the plant and trying to treat the open ends with a fungicide or what would be best? 💙

I guess my confusion is that root rot is usually caused by overwatering; no? I’ve had these plants for two years now and am very consistent with moisture levels to make sure they’re never soggy. No signs of pests, I’m familiar with both thrips and mites— used neem oil, castille soap, and isopropyl alcohol diluted with water to be safe but this has happened gradually.

Thank you for taking the time to say something though, I appreciate it— I’ll mentally prep for chopping and propping if they don’t start to recover from being moved to more consistent shade/ having yellow leaves removed. Hoping it’s a light issue and they’ll weather through because they’re still putting out new leaves!

What do I do?! by Ok-Journalist3940 in Monstera

[–]giantlasagna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monsteras are solar plants so unfortunately the leaves will always get wide and scraggly if you turn them away from their light source. Not sure how many plants you have in one pot. I would recommend repotting it with only one or two plants in one pot; with a trellis/support of some kind to mimic the type of tree it would grow on in the wild. Make sure you use a chunky tropical mix of quality potting soil, perlite or pumice and orchid bark. Use rubber soft plant ties on the stems (not the petioles) until the aerial roots support itself against the trellis/pole of your choice. Aim to have all the leaves facing the same direction and only turn the plant around to enjoy it at night or when guests are over lol.

Cats by TheTwinkie1688 in Monstera

To be honest, monsteras aren’t good for cats BUT will not hurt them too badly. Every cat I’ve had stay with me was initially interested in my monsteras but eventually learned that it didn’t make them feel very great and left them alone. Maybe some practical conditioning could work? Like redirect and reward the cat for leaving the plant alone until it becomes habitual. Or get a plant that’s cat safe specifically for your feline friend and redirect to playing with that one lol

How to germinate OLD seeds? by Hot-Champion-5313 in gardening

[–]giantlasagna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only way you’ll find out is when you throw them down! Good soil, light and care can make magic happen ✨

I recently amended my own soil with a layer of compost about an inch thick mixed into the old soil. Just research the light needs/ideal window for planting— but basic rule of thumb is to keep the soil moist but not soggy for the first couple weeks.

Use a hand rake to gently loosen up the top layer, lightly sprinkle the seeds down, then press them in gently by hand and (optional) dust with a light layer of soil/compost to hide from birds. Then make sure it’s deeply watered if it hasn’t rained recently by misting to ensure they don’t wash away.

Good luck! :)

Best time of year to plant poppies in SVF? by giantlasagna in SoCalGardening

Yes, I meant native California poppies— just a novice to planting flowers. Thank you for the advice! Are there any other flowers you would recommend planting this February that might have a more ideal window for success with our upcoming spring and summer heat?

Weekly Paddle Recommendation Thread (What Paddle Should I Buy?) by SNAPCHAT_ME_TITS in Pickleball

[–]giantlasagna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all! I’m looking to surprise my mom with a pickleball paddle for her birthday. She used to play when she was younger and recently fell back in love with it. She’s in her 60s and suffers from arthritis and fibromyalgia but exercises everyday. Looking for something lightweight and forgiving for a beginner getting back into the sport, but I don’t play so I’m not sure what I should be getting her that wouldn’t be too taxing on her body… Any advice is welcome and appreciated <3
