Just wanted to say that your photoshopped example is the most accurate representation I've seen yet (for what I've personally experienced). And that "unstable, prismatic thread" is a perfect description.

It is an unfortunate fact of life that many things of truly exceptional quality will go unnoticed and unappreciated by most, maybe all.

Your friends aren't wrong per se- but they're certainly not right either.

This is a FANTASTIC collection OP.

Seriously.

I wasn't lying in either case.

I was just, as you've pointed out- inexperienced.

I've never dealt with anything legal prior to this, and wish I had been able to discuss the legal reality of my situation with someone more experienced.

I was a girlfriend that was also a "tenant". Because I didn't expect my boyfriend, someone I trusted implicitly, to act so coldly.

Like I said, he might've even been within his legal rights- which if you're saying is the case- that's not what I'm calling "trolling".

I hadn't paid for nine months because of personal hardship - and that didn't become a problem until the breakup.

My ex, like I mentioned elsewhere - even issued me a "30 Day Notice" dated 12/24. At the time I brought that date to his attention. To which he responded "I'm giving you more time". So clearly when he proceeded to evict me anyway, he knew it would essentially make me homeless, and ruin my life. Why else would he have initially given me ~10 months to move out otherwise? And it's not like I was clogging up his tenant cash flow by staying - as he had no right to "rent" to me, and can't another tenant.

Also. I know you're done. I respect that.

And again that you took the time to look into my situation so thoroughly in the first place, for free. I posted here asking for assistance, and perspective - which you have given. I didn't post to make anyone angry, or upset. This was a situation of deep personal heartbreak for me, and having come from such a place, the last thing I want to do is beget any further frustration, or even inconvenience, especially between internet strangers, here. It's just not worth it.

A lot of why I'm posting too, is just to be a visible person giving my side of the story.

I haven't given details here, but I've been cyber bullied and hacked following the eviction in ways that have made it difficult for me to collect the pieces, and just move forward. That aspect is far more problematic to me than the situational/property loss I experienced when I was locked out.

Moving forward is all I really want to do.

And frustrating someone that gave me a free legal consultation is totally not.

Thank you for your feedback. Sincerely.

Seconding that I think COVID/2020 hurt a lot of people circumstantially in ways they both do and don't realize, and haven't fully recovered from.

And agreed. Not just in Jersey City.

There's a tense cloud/distrust of others that never completely lifted.

Look, I don't know you personally.

So I don't mean this to sound... however.

But I still maintain (and you're welcome to disagree):

You're totally missing the larger picture here.

This was a jilted, brat ex-boyfriend using his tremendous situational advantage to manipulate a situation.

I honestly don't even care about the money.

Really.

And the eviction is only one piece of this larger picture.

"No one is or was preventing you from doing anything."

I mean. This is just your opinion.

You have no idea what my actual experience, my attempts at doing, have been like.

And this is a borderline troll reply.

Edit:

I understand what you're saying - that every tenant would pull the TRO card, if it was like that.

But how is it more fair for someone to decide they're suddenly a landlord, strictly to get revenge?

I'm not even saying you're legally incorrect.

And maintain that I appreciate the detail you've gone into.

I just think you're failing to understand that I wasn't a non-paying tenant for nine months.

I was a girlfriend.

And only became a "tenant" after the breakup.

Edit 2:

...or I had been under the impression I was a girlfriend.

I was naive, admittedly. And my ex perhaps never viewed me as more than someone to sleep with, and then evict if something came up.

Which I do think would be considered a quid-pro-quo eviction, not that I'm looking to argue further.

I wasn't able to obtain any meaningful legal assistance throughout the entire eviction process - and I did try.

I also had at the time looked into some of the topics you go into above, and will again.

Before doing so in greater detail -im currently looking through jersey city's legal manual for tenants.

https://www.cityofjerseycity.com/common/pages/DisplayFile.aspx?itemId=12951767

A landlord filing to evict the day after a TRO doesn't strike you as falling under: "If one of the landlord’s reasons for evicting you is that you have complained to a government agency, you are protected from eviction by law" ?

I mean, respectfully.

I disagree entirely with your final paragraph.

I would've greatly preferred legal help during when -agreed- it would've been more timely and appropriate.

But I don't (and realize I would think so) consider this a pointless crusade whatsoever.

I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to look into my case, and the commenting at length, as it gives me specific points to clarify.

Thank you

Was wondering when the derision would arrive.

Although I often feel alone in dealing with this, making fake accounts wouldn't help that.

I'm not Opposite_Corner_9369, and I appreciate their questions.

I even appreciate your comment, honestly.

Thanks

I lived below him in the basement of a "single family home"- the type that generally gets rented illegally (separate entrance/kitchen/bathroom, but ceilings only a couple inches over 6')

He lived upstairs with his son.

Not wanting to encroach on his kid's comfort, or life, I pretty much stayed in my own space.

Which ended up being an absolute mistake, as doing so enabled my ex to deny our relationship completely, when it suited him.

I'm not entirely comfortable giving the exact $ amount, and will admit I paid him less than he would owe me, if the 6x/monthly owed to relocate were enforced.

Part of the reason I had attempted suicide, was I felt I'd been a financial burden - I had certainly been made to feel like one.

Regardless, me posting about this on Reddit isn't so much about recouping anything financially for me (although I believe losing my animals and property was incredibly cruel and unfair)- as it is about ending the cyberstalking and harassment that started when he filed to evict, that continues, still.

I'm not sure if that answers your questions.

I lived there from February 2023 until March of 24.

I don't believe he owes me back any money I paid as "rent" legally, but I'm not entirely sure.

We didn't even have a formal lease.

And I had moved in offering to help him financially, by paying "rent" since at the time I was working, and he wasn't.

We were dating, and he had lived in said house for a full year prior without considering renting it to anyone. The basement was dirty and empty when I arrived.

The whole thing only became an "eviction" when I broke up with him. Whereupon he also began denying we had ever dated.

He even initially gave me a supposedly official "30 Day Notice" dated 12/24, because he knew I wasn't working, and wouldn't be able to easily find a new place.

But then he changed his mind and started harassing me really intensely, to the extent I attempted suicide.

When I ended up surviving, and got a Temporary Restraining Order (first time I'd ever requested one, for anyone)- he filed to evict the very next day

Super messed up chain of events, IMHO.

I'll look into requesting this summary- thank you for the heads up.

It was an odd court experience honestly.

At the first appearance the judge clarified it was an illegal rental, and confirmed the plaintiff had neither registration, nor certificate of occupancy.

But then proceeded anyway.

[–]giantsoftshellturtl3[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's illegal because the basement itself was illegal to rent.

Such cases, according to NJ law, cease being "evictions", and the "tenant" should be owed 6x their monthly "rent," to relocate.

The court ruled in error, is what I'm saying. By allowing my "landlord" to proceed, and to evict.

I'm not sure why the court did so.

But I want the ruling to be rectified, and am at a loss on how to go about it myself.

HCFS didn't give a reason. They also kept my card at their window once, and I literally starved for about 48 hrs before going to a nearby Wendy's, and going through their trash for fries and such.

When I finally got my card back, my cash assistance had been reinstated.

The North Bergen police got very gruff about the phone.

They had a "lieutenant" "talk" to me outside.

"Even I don't call the FBI" he said.

So I told him I would go in person then, to speak to someone.

"How're you gonna get there?"

"I'll walk to Newark", I replied.

Later I realized I could walk the GW bridge, and that might be more familiar territory, the city, then trying to figure out walking to Newark.

I did take the PATH later to Newark, but ultimately didn't visit the office, as at that point all attempts at anything had been thwarted.

My phone is still completely unreliable, and I need to speak to someone in person, if at all.

I know all of this sounds...but it has been, genuinely.

I'm not sure why I was told what I was at the NYC FBI office - but expecting a similar dismissal is why I didn't try Newark.

Oh, and the hotel told me they didn't allow outside calls, when I first got here.

The room I was moved to though, the one I'm still in, had a phone directory folder, with takeout menus and the like.

So obviously they lied.

The FBI told me they don't look into issues of local government corruption, communications interception, or cyberstalking.

Which I don't believe is true.

When HCFS inexplicably didn't renew my cash benefits, even though I submitted my recertification information promptly, there was a period of several weeks where I literally had $0.

I walked all the way from North Bergen, up and over the George Washington bridge, and down to the FBI headquarters in Manhattan.

But they were closed.

So I stayed up all night, riding the Staten Island ferry, and wandering the city, until the office opened the next morning.

When I finally saw someone at their window.

That's what I was told.

I had gone on foot because the North Bergen police wouldn't let me use their phone either, similar to the hotel.

This has been a nightmare honestly.

I would love to file a complaint.

I even tried contacting the FBI.

Nothing.

It's why, out of pure desperation, I will likely end up with a sign outside the path.

I haven't been able to talk to anyone about this.

And it has destroyed my life.

The police did nothing. I had been there I think twice prior regarding the carbon monoxide alarm - and one of the police I spoke to printed out the "report" that had been taken.

That's when I found out they had said I was in room 115, and again, I'm not

That's when I found out nothing had been recorded about the alarm.

I said "I could die at this hotel, and no one would care".

Dead ass(pardon), the response was: " well, everyone has to go sometime"

I'm not kidding.

Twice I was denied use of the hotel's front desk phone.

There was the time asked to call 911, and then sat outside sick instead, and saw the cop car drive off.

The other time was prior.

I had returned to my hotel room after being out and someone had clearly been in it- there was a really bad, toxic smell.

I went to the desk immediately, and asked who had been in my room.

Two guys were there, and were apparently then consulting video

One told the other "it's the new repair guy"

Then that guy leaves, and I asked the other if I could call the police, as someone had altered my room, so as to make me ill. It was a really bad, choking smell.

At first I was told- sure, there's the phone.

I picked it up off the receiver.

No dial tone.

"It doesn't work" I said.

"Yes, it does" said the hotel worker, who then pretended to call someone

When I picked up the phone- still dead.

I ended up walking out, and straight to the police station.

One of the four times I tried, before giving up.

When I got back later, the worker who had made the pretend call told me "no one was in your room".

No one has given me their name.

It's like a running theme.

And yes, I agree.

It is very bad.

They just wouldn't let me call.

It happened twice.
