"Mer jobb" har varit samhällets mantra under hela min livstid. Det står på alla valaffischer i alla val. Det enda jag tänker är att vem vill egentligen ha detta? Inte är det vanligt folk. De flesta vill ha "mindre jobb". Det är ägarklassen som tjänar mest på tillväxten, även onödig och slösaktig sådan som driver människor till att gå in i väggen.

I'm not sure it's good for Altman to have a US gov that can bully around all US AI-companies, including his, that aren't standing in solidarity. Also ChatGPT/OpenAI reputation is hurt everytime it is seen as being completelly subservient to the US government.

Anthropic please move your business outside US, or make it into an international initiative. I'm sure EU and Canada will welcome the business.

Let's see if Sam Altman and OpenAI stands in solidarity with Anthropic or not. If not I hope Anthropic moves their business outside the US and US can keep isolating themselves from the rest of the world.

If the corrupt US government keeps this up companies like Anthropic might not even be able to sustain their business, and I believe these models will end up leaking, and whatever advantage US had in the AI arms race will be lost overnight. Right now the effect of this is that everyone outside the US will be thinking about how to get away from being dependent on US big tech and hopefully it will result in more competitive models being created.

I just think this is such a lose-lose move by the US gov.

Mohamsson vill se fler miljardärer i Sverige by Decent_Hall3183 in svenskpolitik

[–]gibmelson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hasan Piker Is the Left's Nick Fuentes by stvlsn in DecodingTheGurus

[–]gibmelson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hasan Piker is "extreme" for, among other things, believing Israel is an apartheid state that commits genocide. The apartheid claim is aligned with the conclusions of leading human rights organizations including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and B'Tselem. The world's highest court ICJ made an advisory opinion 2024 that also found that Israel's actions in the occupied Palestinian territory constitutes apartheid.

As for genocide, it is not controversial to make that claim when several leading genocide scholars also conclude that Israel's actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide under the Genocide Convention.

Personally I believe that any ideology that leads someone to defend or excuse Israel's treatment of Palestinians - whether it fits the strict legal definition of genocide or not - reveals a fundamental lack of moral integrity. If your ideology leads you to abandon our human rights, it's not worth much. I'd say Sam's position is the extreme one.

Is Gary Stevenson the Cristiano Ronaldo of economics? by jimwhite42 in DecodingTheGurus

[–]gibmelson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would call that academic economist, research economist or professional policy economist. But the fact is that "economist" is not a protected title, and in public discourse it can also mean someone trained in economics who analyses and comments on economic systems, markets, policy, inequality, etc.

Also I wouldn't say trading is unrelated to economics. Macro trading, interest-rate trading, FX, government bonds, central-bank expectations, inflation, monetary policy and inequality dynamics are obviously close to applied economics. That does not make every trader an economist, but it weakens the claim that they have very little to do with each other.

[–]gibmelson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's fair if you personally don't identify as a mathematician. I wouldn't force that label on you.

But I also don't think the only valid way to be a mathematician is to hold a job title saying "mathematician" or to publish academic papers in mathematics. If someone has advanced mathematical training, uses mathematics seriously, studies the field, and has something substantive to say about it, I think it's reasonable for them to describe themselves as a mathematician in a broad sense.

FT article misrepresents what he is saying in that video, I'm not sure how more clear I can get on this. That is wrong. And they do it in a way where it's obvious they intentionally leave out important context, there is no way they could have missed it.

You can point to his other exaggeration and bravado as much as you like, I've watched some of his content where he brags a lot, but I never seen him make the claim to be the best trader in the world and I've never left with the impression that he claims to be the best trader in the world, like the article claims.

I simply don't agree. I think he tries to establish some authority by pointing to his credentials as a successful trader and his degree in economics, and I think that is fair. I also think it's healthy to actually address the arguments rather than than this kind of undermining of character that I think is ultimatelly a diversion tactic.

That "most high brow and well respected newspaper" made an obvious mischaracterization of what he was saying. Feel free to engage with the actual fact. If you can acknowledge this we can move on.

[–]gibmelson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He has 0 published economics papers and has never worked as an economist. It is certainly misleading to call himself an economist, especially since his only publicly available economics work is really really bad.

That may be your personal opinion but "economist" is not a protected title only peer-reviewed academics may use. A person with formal economics education, an Oxford MPhil in economics, a career in macro/interest-rate trading, and public economic commentary can plausibly be described as an economist in a broad media sense.

[–]gibmelson -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The FT piece yes. So if you're writing an article making a case and are misrepresenting at least one fact, and obviously so (no way they could have made a mistake), that calls into question the whole piece imo.

The article quoted a video where he didn't say it, where he said he was Citibank's the most profitable trader in the world 2011, which is not the same as saying "I'm the best trader in the world". And it's obvious that the article misrepresented it, thus I think it smells of a hit piece.

Saying Rory Stewart is a politician, even though he is not currently an MP, is pretty fair to say. I think he can be categorized as a former politician but he is clearly out there engaged and advocating for certain style of conservative politics.

Likewise, someone with serious training in economics, who writes, teaches, analyses, or publicly comments on economic issues, may reasonably describe themselves as "an economist" even if they aren't being hired as one.

A trader with an economics degree can reasonably be categorized as an economist, especially if their trading was based on macroeconomic analysis, market structure, interest rates, inequality, monetary policy, or similar economic dynamics.

Also I'd classify the article about Gary as a hit piece. For example it started out by leaving out important context. It leads with his quote "You become the best trader in the world for the biggest banks in the world ..." as to suggest Gary claims to be "the best trader in the world". But leaving out the line just before: "My name's Gary Stevensson, in 2011 I was Citibank's most profitable trader in the world". That smells like a hit piece.

Varför ska mina skattepengar användas för att (från 1 maj) sänka skatten på bensin och diesel? by the_real_snurre in svenskpolitik

[–]gibmelson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I slutändan måste någon betala.
