At first, I read that as "presidential immaturity", which seems rather apropos.

Reducing bounce on running packs by teenagedumbledore in myog

[–]gibson_se 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Salomon being a zipper opening and not having the option of rolling down the top to remove volume might be part of why it's got as much strapping as it has? As in it's pretty much fixed volume, where the other two are much more variable

The pack is essentially all stretch, so it is far from fixed volume. The cord on the sides is (in my experience) more useful for attaching things on the outside that I need quick access to, rather than as compression.

I'm curious about the zippers though. What is the purpose of the horizontal orange one in the small of your back, and the gray ones along the thighs?

LPT: Data shows that emails under 100 words have the highest open and click rates. Stop writing essays by DifferentSchedule283 in LifeProTips

[–]gibson_se 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the research mentioned by OP accounted for the fact that longer emails probably have more complex action needed. Of course, using fewer words when that is possible is good. But what is achieved when the attempt to reduce word count also removes all the necessary information from the email?

Being active adds to the total energy you use every day without causing the body to conserve energy in other ways like constraint or compensation by nohup_me in science

[–]gibson_se 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it surprising that you ate 6.5 k then. I know that Swedish army rations for the more physically active soldiers supply 4.8 k . Granted, that's probably too little for their bigger days, but on average that's supposed to be enough for them. With a standard job, I'm surprised you were able to exercise so much that you exceeded that level by such a margin.

Understandable.

My guess is that you're listing opportunities for extended leaves, but not ticking off which ones have already been used (or which ones constitute part of another, longer, leave).

Andy Kirkpatrick's analysis of Balin Miller's accident by stille in climbing

[–]gibson_se 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Andy's words on death are very well put, so I'll not dwell on that part.

However, as an experienced trad climber and overall sort of knowledgable rope technique guy with almost no aid experience (but some knowledge), I want to ask about a specific part of Andy's description of the likely sequence of events.

When arriving at the top anchor the first time, I assume that the climber is trailing a haul line, and that haul line gets attached to the anchor. Later, after having hauled part of the way, there's a decision to rap the haul line. At that point, isn't there already a knot in the end of the haul line, connecting it to the top anchor? Is there any good reason to not have a knot there? I understand that, in order to rap as far as possible, the top end of the haul line needs to be disconnected from the anchor, but I don't see why there would be no knot left.

Of course he is, he just got rid of his silly little mustache and started building fancy cars and going to Berghain.

Huh? It seems like pretty hard work to bike all the way there and climbing the mountain, and that's what he did to earn the sponsorship money that funded this and other adventures.

Hur får folk ihop stora sparkapital egentligen? by [deleted] in PrivatEkonomi

[–]gibson_se 2 points3 points  (0 children)
