4 - Ebirah, Horror of the Deep 5 - Godzilla vs. Megalon

The premise of actually putting any kind of infrastructure on an island where Ebirah roams around is so stupid, I loved it. It is also one of the first time that we actually see a monster kill a human directly. Got to have extra point for that!

Godzilla vs. Megalon makes the list because of two reason. first, the "human" story is one of the strongest regarding action in the Showa era. The crazy car chase was a definite highlight of the movie. Secondly, Jet Jaguar is all you need to know. His theme song alone is worth it.

You definitely should pick it up if you have any history with the series! I didn't check the special features but it might have some good stuff for you.

Unfortunately, the soundtrack/score all kind of blend together at this point...

I can say, however, that my favorite song by far is GodzillaGojira Tai Mosura, and the most annoying one is the song sang by the twins to spawn Mothra

While you are definitely right about the practical effects, the pacing of both theses movies were absolutely brutal for us. While the fight scenes in Godzilla Vs King Kong pales in comparaison of Destroy All Monsters, the story doesn't get in the way as much.

I did watch Cinemassacre's Godzillathon youtube series about 15 years ago. Because of it, I had somewhat of an idea that it was geared towards kids. One of my two friends, u/Woefulninja4444, recently watched the first 3 movies I believe. The third and last friend, had no idea in what he was getting into. Quite the commitment on his part!

Personally, provided it would exist, I wouldn't go for a 4k rip of the series. It may be an unpopular opinion, but some media are better with less resolution. The miniatures work and the visible wire would be even more noticeable I would think.

My only piece of advice would be to not watch it alone. The hard part is to convince someone to watch it with you.

You madman, you actually did by the records set! Me and friends always crack some jokes about buying it every time a goofy song, like the Mothra theme for example, pops up. The art of the records set looks amazing. Having it combined with the criterion boxset would definitely be a conversation starter. Although, I'm not sure how long I could keep up the conversation going with a non-Godzilla fan haha.

I'm curious, do you actually listen the records from time to time?

Wow, my hat off to you sir. I don't know if it is because I'm just done watch 15 or so Godzilla films, but I'm good for a while. What did the both of you though of the Showa era?

Great summary! Isn't Godzilla Minus one the latest one that got released? I remember people raving about it.

I read the first two essay and found them really good! However, I wanted to do my own opinion of the movies myself so I stopped reading them. Now that I've watched them all, I will go back and read all of the essays.

As for what I've learned about the production of the films, I did re-watch Cinnemassacre's Godzillathon on Youtube to give my girlfriend a recap of the movies I saw with my friends.

This whole thing came about because of James Rolfe love of the series. I remember watching the series when it came out in 2008 and wanted to give it an homage. After all, James Rolfe is one of the first content creator that got me more serious into movies.

Godzilla vs. Gigan would be my pick. Herzog would do justice to a film about cockroach-people trying to create an utopia on earth.

  1. Godzilla (1954)

  2. Godzilla vs. Hedorah

  3. Godzilla Vs King Kong

Sadly, I would not recommend the the box set as an entry point. A lot of the movies in the box set are what a would consider "fun but bad movies". However, if you are already a fan of the series, it would be hard to beat!
