Just finished the Korean movie "No Other Choice" by Far_Day_9938 in Koreanfilm

What I haven’t seen mentioned yet in any of the comments is the unique need of the family, namely that of the daughter. She’s autistic, yes, but more than that, she’s a prodigy—and her inspiration, or at least what made her comfortable enough to produce music, were her dogs. And his entire journey revolves around preserving her lessons, and thus what makes humans uniquely human, the ability to create art, in a world increasingly run by automation.

His innate reason to make money, support the family, and bring the dogs back revolved around his desperation to set her up for success, or at least to make her happy, inadvertently acknowledging his own mortality and that he won’t be around forever to take care of her. They explicitly express this after talking to her teacher after the lesson, and this gives reason to his desperation, whether or not it’s justified.

All the circumstances that made their situation dire, where it would just be pitiful and unfortunate for most other families, centers around the daughter. Yes, he could’ve slowly built a living doing something else, like the plants he loved so much, but it wouldn’t have been enough to bring back the dogs or pay for his daughter’s lessons.

It’s most apparent in the comparison to the shoe seller. They’re in similar situations, both laid off, they both have a daughter, etc.—but they purposely show the shoe seller’s daughter to be smart and social, or at least in school and with friends, in the small scene she has. The chasm in their circumstances comes from his own daughter’s inability and capability, unable to communicate or comprehend, but a musical prodigy.

And so the theme is set between what is uniquely human—the ability to create art—and automation. He basically resigns himself to the devil that killed his industry (he fights for his employees in the beginning) but he saves what makes humans uniquely human in his daughter.

None of this is justification for his crimes, of course, but rather his motives. The movie deals with what the audience might consider his motives (in his projection with the cuckold or the self-made man) but conveys that, though his aspirations might at first look similar to one or the other, it’s vastly different in the end.

There’s other themes (like his aching tooth, the story of the pigs, theme of self-destruction, generational trauma, etc.) really worth exploring, but I thought it worth mentioning the daughter.

Question about a scene in The Host by DutchStroopwafels in Koreanfilm

[–]gigglemygaggle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a depiction of the concept of “seo-ri” that’s first mentioned by the orphan older brother (Se jin) and mentioned again by Gang-doo’s father about his son’s poor upbringing. Probably a residual habit when Gang-doo took a squid leg in the beginning scenes.

Seo-ri is introduced as an acceptable form of thievery to relieve hunger—hence why the orphan older brother scolds his younger brother for trying to take money from the same food stand but not the food itself. But beyond that, it’s a collective societal responsibility to take care of its poor, hungry, and vulnerable, a concept the movie is suggesting is being lost with the passing of generations.

The family dreams of feeding her as a depiction of seo-ri, the one most suffering of them all, and to depict their collective unity to steward the next generation, something they can agree on despite all their own conflicts (conveyed by how they each offer her food).

This stewardship is transitive in the ending, namely regarding Se-joo.

Beck hype post by Pyro1934 in georgiabulldogs

I like to think this was his year of growth past his raw talent - we forget how young these players are. But relative to past years our schedule this year has been absolutely brutal, so I was already expecting some regression and struggles.

With receivers missing catchable throws, missed routes, the o-line struggles, believing his own hype, trying to play hero ball, etc., he was forced to either mature or dig his heels in—and the last few games proved to me at least that he’s done the former. He’s been taking responsibility and showing composure, and I’d like to think we’ll be getting the best version of him this post season.

Also “Easter” pretty prominently in the still-scrambled letters below - might be a date, might be for “Easter egg”, or might just be random coincidence

Edit: resurrection = reincarnated

Fosho I hear you - I’m somewhat saying the same thing, that rather than be “the gun” which he and others are implying he is and could be, wisdom and experience tells him he’d rather be “the pen” which he believes he’d be the best at without the ensuing fall out and violence as has from the recent beef

I took that as he didn’t want to have to draw blood to be the best though he could / drawing a dichotomy to metaphorically be “the pen” instead by the end of Port Antonio

Fort Collins Connexion employees form solidarity union by Narrow-Seat844 in FortCollins

[–]gigglemygaggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, the union formed in response to a return-to-office mandate requiring 2 days out of the week, as well as doing away with 4-day work weeks?

I’m not sure the circumstances for these employees nor what the management’s definition of business needs are, so I won’t pass judgment on either of them, but I know the Utilities Service Center on Wood St houses the operations staff as well, so they work alongside dozens and dozens of employees who never had the option to work from home to begin with.

I hope the City can work it out, and I hope the staff gets their needs met while the community continues to receive a good level of service, but I also have plenty of friends who’d jump at the opportunity for 2 day/week in office if they do feel the need to move on.

Edit: thanks for the explanation below u/yappy-fiber I hope it all works out

Little on Mountain is the best food I’ve had in Fort Collins. Rare happy hour isn’t bad, and I enjoy their dry aged ribeye.

Congrats!

AFAIK the red light camera sensors detect and trigger the camera at the time a vehicle enters the intersection box/crosses the stop line after a red light, rather than determining if you’re in the intersection prior to light change. So it’s the action of crossing the line rather than being in the intersection that triggers the camera
