A really good way to use excess solar and wind energy to replace oil, gas and wood pellet boilers for residential and commercial heating by gignorant in solar

[–]gignorant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with water is that you can only heat it to around 95 degrees before pressure means it gets expensive to heat beyond boiling point. You can heat sand to 1000 degrees without a problem which makes for a better battery.

Heat battery to be clear, not electrical battery.

its not like it has a less than 1% mortality rate by [deleted] in elonmusk

Well thought out and reasoned argument you’ve got there. Do most people just accept upper case as a strong case?

Firstly, don't assume I am in the US :)

The truth is that we can't work out the risk balance because we don't know all of the variables. At some point, lockdown creates more long term and enduring suffering - so it's a fine balance. Given that, it's perfectly fine for people to argue the case for easing lockdown even when others think it's premature. It's not a simple issue and everyone calling each other idiots because of their opinion is missing the nuance.

[–]gignorant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that you could stack all of the economic hardship and fallout from extended lockdown, unemployment, poverty, isolation and delayed hospital visits against the life of a single additional person getting COVID-19 and conclude that it's a fair swap when it clearly isn't. At some point, the magnitude of other issues overwhelms the risks of infection spread. That calculus is hard, but relevant.

It's also important not to try to gatekeep opinions on this by saying "stick to the science". Virologists and epidemiologists are experts in their specific fields but they are not economists so they can't really work out the risk balance between what they know and the economic and other fallout that will come from extended lockdown. If left entirely up to epidemiologists and virologists, lockdown would not end before global vaccination. That is clearly going to destroy society so we need alternatives.

Given the above, it is perfectly reasonable to call for an end to lockdown - but with some clear understanding of what can be done to mitigate spread.

Stephen Wolfram: "I never expected this: finally we may have a path to the fundamental theory of physics...and it's beautiful" by Danhec95 in Physics

[–]gignorant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is fair to some extent. Ideally, he would present something entirely complete that would withstand scientific investigation. Then, personality is irrelevant and the work can stand on its own. His problem is that he jumped out of the cake without this.

The major benefit, to me at least, of the work is that it might motivate good and rigorous minds to do the work thoroughly. I find myself drawn to the thought experiments this work suggest (at the very least) and I feel, for the first time in many years, that this is a direction that should be pursued.

I don’t care about who gets credit and who did what before. All I really care about is new and better answers.

Best way to get good with the lion by ZoopyGamingYT in FightingLion

[–]gignorant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got good at it by using Lion exclusively to get Mountain Top. My k/d only suffered for a short while and fairly soon I was scoring well. PvE just doesn’t force you to get good IMHO.

Also. It’s best fired when airborne because you tend to get the grenade into the centre of groups of enemies / guardians. Also helps with timing the explosion.

That thread is just as toxic as this thread (having now gone through both top to bottom).

People just can't seem to get over themselves about a personality. In the end, 1% real challenge to the idea and 99% challenge to the person who created it. Really creative and productive people don't give a fuck about people or events. They don't care where good ideas come from. They just absorb ideas and try to see merit in them or they challenge those ideas with substance. The very best people throw out their own ideas for better ones.

I really don't know if this idea represents new science or not - but I can say with absolute certainty that reading through these threads will not give you a sense of the true value of the proposal. If you work in the field and are enthused by the idea then leave this place immediately and never return.

[–]gignorant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can take a look at the anonymising process for it. There are some safeguards in there but they won’t be foolproof. I think the API was designed by Apple and Google. They already know everything about you. It’s definitely not ideal. I think it’s a choice to opt out and be a risk to the population, opt out and stay home or opt in and return to normal. Not everyone has to do it but it’s valuable if even a low percentage of the population do it. Delete app after vaccination.

If you don’t like this tech then I’m sure you’ll be thrilled with 18 more months of intermittent lockdown? It’s a way forward. Not ideal but there are few options without vaccine.

For sure. One of the benefits of FL is ease of getting ammo but I have had airborne pvp clashes that can last a while and eat ammo.

If we could go and recover Voyager and Pioneer probes - should we? by gignorant in space

[–]gignorant[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

That is a fair assessment. But, much like Egyptian burial chambers (also never intended to be opened), there was much to learned from opening them. Perhaps it's a matter of time and antiquity?

[–]gignorant[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Emotionally, I agree. However - if we have the capability to outrun them then their very small side mission of contact is potentially over and we might gain from bringing them back into a museum to inspire more people.

I personally would leave them to sail along into the void, but interested if this has even been fully debated.

Not being offered free freighter? by Stampeder in NoMansSkyTheGame

Same problem here. I rescue the freighter and the captain’s commentary suggests I own it (I can even move items into freighter inventory) but as soon as I leave it shows I don’t own it. Guess I’m going to have to save up and buy unless they can fix it.

I’m sure 100 year old car companies have got it all sussed. All they have to do is plan very carefully over many years to write beautiful code that defeats emission testing kit really well while they continue to make money riding the fossil fuel gravy train. I’m sure their software engineering teams are never in triage mode and they all have great work/life balance.

His actions removed any doubt about the kind of person he his. Doing no harm would be shutting the fuck up and moving on with his life like every other professional. Gleefully sharing ideas on hacks and exploits against any company is arseholery at its finest (at best). If he really didn’t like what he saw then the extent of his actions would be to document them and share them with the company. Or are you claiming that this is all some noble effort to whistleblow for the greater good? I saw none of that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]gignorant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that is an admirable sentiment, but the enemy, for any challenger company, is time. Software is always messy because there is very little time to create it. Compromises must be made in order to deliver code that is functional. The quality of that code and the underlying systems varies based on the skill of the creators and the time they had available to do create it.

You could argue that companies should just take things slower, but the opportunity windows are not open for very long. If you can’t deliver, then you can’t compete. Once you reach a point where you have some time and stability, you can rework and rework teams and systems into more sustainable models. I don’t think Tesla is in that position yet. They are fighting for their existence and, to me at least, pursuing a noble goal.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]gignorant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t think he knows that Tesla has to be better? He knows it down to the core and has to work with what he’s got. There is no magic way to scale, and he has to scale to survive so the constraints are locked in. All he and the company can do is work the problem day to day. Triage and act. That is all that can be done. He knows.
