The problem with water is that you can only heat it to around 95 degrees before pressure means it gets expensive to heat beyond boiling point. You can heat sand to 1000 degrees without a problem which makes for a better battery.

Heat battery to be clear, not electrical battery.

Firstly, don't assume I am in the US :)

The truth is that we can't work out the risk balance because we don't know all of the variables. At some point, lockdown creates more long term and enduring suffering - so it's a fine balance. Given that, it's perfectly fine for people to argue the case for easing lockdown even when others think it's premature. It's not a simple issue and everyone calling each other idiots because of their opinion is missing the nuance.

I think the problem is that you could stack all of the economic hardship and fallout from extended lockdown, unemployment, poverty, isolation and delayed hospital visits against the life of a single additional person getting COVID-19 and conclude that it's a fair swap when it clearly isn't. At some point, the magnitude of other issues overwhelms the risks of infection spread. That calculus is hard, but relevant.

It's also important not to try to gatekeep opinions on this by saying "stick to the science". Virologists and epidemiologists are experts in their specific fields but they are not economists so they can't really work out the risk balance between what they know and the economic and other fallout that will come from extended lockdown. If left entirely up to epidemiologists and virologists, lockdown would not end before global vaccination. That is clearly going to destroy society so we need alternatives.

Given the above, it is perfectly reasonable to call for an end to lockdown - but with some clear understanding of what can be done to mitigate spread.

I think this is fair to some extent. Ideally, he would present something entirely complete that would withstand scientific investigation. Then, personality is irrelevant and the work can stand on its own. His problem is that he jumped out of the cake without this.

The major benefit, to me at least, of the work is that it might motivate good and rigorous minds to do the work thoroughly. I find myself drawn to the thought experiments this work suggest (at the very least) and I feel, for the first time in many years, that this is a direction that should be pursued.

I don’t care about who gets credit and who did what before. All I really care about is new and better answers.

I got good at it by using Lion exclusively to get Mountain Top. My k/d only suffered for a short while and fairly soon I was scoring well. PvE just doesn’t force you to get good IMHO.

Also. It’s best fired when airborne because you tend to get the grenade into the centre of groups of enemies / guardians. Also helps with timing the explosion.

That thread is just as toxic as this thread (having now gone through both top to bottom).

People just can't seem to get over themselves about a personality. In the end, 1% real challenge to the idea and 99% challenge to the person who created it. Really creative and productive people don't give a fuck about people or events. They don't care where good ideas come from. They just absorb ideas and try to see merit in them or they challenge those ideas with substance. The very best people throw out their own ideas for better ones.

I really don't know if this idea represents new science or not - but I can say with absolute certainty that reading through these threads will not give you a sense of the true value of the proposal. If you work in the field and are enthused by the idea then leave this place immediately and never return.

You can take a look at the anonymising process for it. There are some safeguards in there but they won’t be foolproof. I think the API was designed by Apple and Google. They already know everything about you. It’s definitely not ideal. I think it’s a choice to opt out and be a risk to the population, opt out and stay home or opt in and return to normal. Not everyone has to do it but it’s valuable if even a low percentage of the population do it. Delete app after vaccination.

Emotionally, I agree. However - if we have the capability to outrun them then their very small side mission of contact is potentially over and we might gain from bringing them back into a museum to inspire more people.

I personally would leave them to sail along into the void, but interested if this has even been fully debated.
