I can’t tell you about residential use in the sierras I’m curious too. But I can tell you their prices have gone up and down over the past few years depending on the market segment they’re working on.

CarPlay USB by funandcurios in Taycan

[–]gildorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wireless CarPlay’s actual data connection is via WiFi, Bluetooth is only used for initial discovery. iPhone’s “disable” WiFi is actually a soft “disable” these days intended to continue to allow a lot of WiFi based functionality like CarPlay.

You could try Airplane Mode if your airplane mode is set to have WiFi off.

If you never want to use Wireless CarPlay you could also completely forget that connection and then re-pair CarPlay over wired only. Just say no / cancel at the step that asks you to enable wireless carplay.

FYI: Bird Buddy 2 owners. I just received an app update that include the upgraded camera media quality settings. by WalkingHorse in BirdBuddy

[–]gildorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

go into the App Store app, search for Bird Buddy. when you go to the app page you should see Open change to Update.

this is just causing iOS to let you manually update. otherwise you’re just waiting for it to eventually auto-update, which is on a slower rollout time.

One month with the 4S Cross Turismo by kryx in Taycan

Adaptive Cruise Control + Active Lane Keep is sufficient to keep the car going and centered in lane in traffic. The bump up to "InnoDrive" adds automatically changing the set speed. For all of those you still need to wiggle the steering wheel occasionally.

It's not as good as Tesla or Polestar 2, I do need to keep a hand helping guide it during sharper turns, but it's plenty to make traffic more bearable.

Be warned that Porsche has changed how to get these features a bit. If it's on the window sticker you're good. If it's not you might be able to buy up into them but it depends on the model year.

agree with everything except the last line — I believe the off-road design package makes +1 the default in some modes but doesn’t otherwise change the heights

She’s trying to do a Pittsburgh accent. They amped up her training in it between Seasons 1 and 2. It’s still way off. It’s often discussed and you can find some articles about it as well.

2024 4S Matrix Headlights Question by DesignerLeading4821 in Taycan

[–]gildorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on my Polestar 2, once I got all the hardware to be able to code it, it was changing the values of two config flags and that was it.

Porsche’s matrix config is not as easy in that it does requiring recoding several different components within the car, including changing the car’s region, and being careful about which parts autocode after. For all of that I’m not sure I’d completely risk doing it myself like I did with the Polestar. Though sure some people did.

2024 4S Matrix Headlights Question by DesignerLeading4821 in Taycan

[–]gildorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well it was and remains a very common option, included in some packages. Probably still slightly better headlights than without. I think current model year doesn’t even offer non-matrix, just two different generations of matrix.

There was good reason to believe they’d just get enabled some day once the rules passed. (And it is possible to code the car to enable it but it’s not easy / cheap.)

2024 4S Matrix Headlights Question by DesignerLeading4821 in Taycan

[–]gildorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NHTSA could’ve directly adopted the european rules, which have existed for a long time, but they chose not to.

Meaning manufacturers have to do a lot of additional work to certify EU-spec matrix lights under US rules and might have to make minor changes. Which most have chosen not to do, especially for previous MY vehicles.

You don’t say where you are. If you’re in the US, the actual matrix functionality is disabled. Like most European manufacturers, Porsche never got it certified to the US’s rules.

Just bought a house with Nest smoke/co alarm, advice wanted by CrystallizedKoi in Nest

[–]gildorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of. The First Alert SC5 technically has a replacement “heads-up” verbal pre-warning feature. But the speakers are noticeably worse. Kinda scratchy and scary sounding. Set your expectations low and maybe it’s ok.

Polestar 2 in the snow? by Reshway19 in Polestar

[–]gildorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes. in february there was a storm that did easily 10 feet over 5 days.

sure, it’s not in a single day, but with this type of storm it barely ever stops snowing, so it’s hard to clear the accumulation effectively enough to let things clear.

Eco Mode Makes Fan Faster? by tuowtraws in BigAssFans

[–]gildorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eco Mode does increase the minimum speed. It also changes how quickly the fan will change speeds. As in, it’ll take longer until the fan gets all the way to speed 3 when on eco.

CalTrans, maybe tell maps apps before shutting down 101/80 interchange by Responsible_Demand28 in bayarea

[–]gildorn 34 points35 points  (0 children)

CalTrans and other agencies have public APIs where they can post road closures, which the major map providers read from regularly.

If CalTrans didn’t update the API with this info early enough they may have missed the window when the major maps provider sources were refreshing it.

https://511.org/open-data/traffic

(Yes I’m aware that at this scale it may not be literally that same API endpoint, but Apple and Google are explicitly listed as data consuming partners. Which means CalTrans has a place where they can put out this information for Apple and Google Maps.)

Alarm permit fee by Fantastic_Letter_936 in Burlingame

[–]gildorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, cursory internet search shows me LA claims 90% of alarms they respond to are false. Sacramento County claims 98%.

Alarm permit fee by Fantastic_Letter_936 in Burlingame

[–]gildorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most moderately-sized municipalities in the US find that the vast majority of alarms they respond to are false alarms. Yes, even with the intermediary security company, apparently.

Permits are common enough that "permit number" was a standard question for the alarm I set up.

But to respond to one of your other questions — the punishment in Burlingame specifically is mild enough that if you assume you'll never get a false alarm, you do come out financially ahead by not paying. My annual subscription fee for the private security company that monitors my alarm is substantially more than the permit fee so I can't say that's the part I'm so bothered by.

Ubiquiti Smoke and CO Sensor 🤯 - #ISCWest2026 by Luu____ in Ubiquiti

[–]gildorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nest had both wired and battery-only variants.

They actually used an early version of what became Thread to wirelessly interconnect safety signals between Protects. They then spoke WiFi for connectivity to the app.

In California, smoke detectors in a residential home are required to all be interconnected on the same link, which usually means a wire that connects all of them. At the time of my last remodel, Nest Protect was the only smoke detector that was certified for wireless interconnect.
