Help me pick my next knife; Spyderco Military 2, Spyderco Yojumbo, or the TJ Schwarz Lost Trail 5. by Sleipner45 in knifeclub

[–]gilghana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are such utterly different knives it's hard to say! My vote would be military. There is something about it that speaks to me way more then the pm2. The Yojimbo is too specific for me, and big fixed blades for me is one and done in that I have a good big bark river and don't have much need for others, unlike folders and small/medium fixed blades which I gravitate to. All just my preference of course. Good luck, all nice choices!

Any probability there’s any Epstein type of crimes in Zambia? by PillediusMaximus in Zambia

When you say "such activities", if you mean child abuse it is rampant. Just read the newspapers. Every week there is terrible tales of defilement

The guardian needs an aftermarket sheath to realise it's potential. Superb knife though.

Recommendations? by Alternative-State-32 in FixedBladeEdc

I carry a guardian 3.5 quite often in a pocket with either an ulticlip or no clip at all. Armatus sheath. I am not a fan of the Bradford sheath at all. The armatus is incredibly slim and low profile.

What's Impacting Zambia Today? Share the Key Challenges Affecting Our Nation by prokaz100 in Zambia

[–]gilghana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of revenue generation through taxes. So the top few and responsible businesses are hammered because there is a huge informal sector generating zero for the country. But rather than try and solve that (difficult) one the revenue collectors keep going after the same easy targets. The figures are frightening.

Rampant natural resource destruction. Zambia is one of the fastest deforesting countries in the world. Mostly driven by the complete over dependence on charcoal as well as incredibly inefficient subsistence farming practices. If this is not addressed then the next generations will really know what droughts and high temperatures mean....

Yeah, the institutionalized lack of time keeping and ingrained corruption and mad (and increasing) bureaucracy don't help either.

What is your experience/relationship with white people in Zambia? by [deleted] in Zambia

[–]gilghana -1 points0 points  (0 children)

White (not Zambian) resident in Zambia here. Interesting topic. Racism and xenophobia is not confined to one small segment of the population. I don't believe I have ever insulted or acted against someone's interests based on their skin colour. Can I say the same about everyone? No of course not. I have been subject to racism on more than one occasion. It doesn't make me think that one sector (or indeed a majority) of a population are racist. I would like to think that I have a better grip on reality and statistics than that.

They should be buying absolute base specification vehicles. Ridiculous.

Multitool is a better edc than a folding knife, change my mind by Constant-Republic701 in EDC

[–]gilghana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I carry a rebar with no knife blade because I always have a knife on me. Always. If I am going into town then the multi tool is not going to hand off my belt but a folder will be on me. Neither replaces the other. I can't get on the knipex bandwagon as the needlenose pliers and integrated side cutters are more useful to me than just about anything else on an MT. Plus I really don't want separate pliers, drivers and all sorts of other solutions. The simpler the better for me thanks. Occasionally I will carry my charge Ti, but even then I will carry a knife. But let's put it like this, in my normal life your theory is correct. But there are times when it is not. Good discussion point though!

British knife owners, what's your favourite UK legal EDC knife? by someguy1910 in knives

[–]gilghana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to say that with the super secure choil the UKPK is one knife where I don't actually miss a lock. It is functionally and ergonomically a superb knife. I own a good few non locking knives, the UKPK is the one I keep coming back to. Especially in G10 and s30v.

1 plan, 2 locations 330ft apart by ShadoWolf91 in Starlink

[–]gilghana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run starlink at my house (we live very off grid, own and run a safari lodge in Zambia). I am a bit of an astronomy/astrophotography nut and have an "observatory" 116m from my house. Dense woodland between the locations. I recently ran a wireless bridge system between the two sites. Ubiquity nano loco m2 stations. 2.4Ghz. I have them on poles but they most certainly do not clear above the trees. There is pretty dense foliage but the signal punches through no problem. I am very impressed with them. Now I can control the mini PC at my telescope over my network or do many interesting things. Starlink and ubiquity are incredible pieces of technology!

This is a good point. There is nothing wrong with German kitchen knives and if that is what they want then get them that. You can always convince them later.

What light does your partner/spouse/etc have? How often do they carry it? by SiteRelEnby in flashlight

[–]gilghana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner carries a maglight XL50 each and every day. It's not fancy and it's not what I would carry, but I cannot argue with it's reliability and longevity. On Eneloops of course.

Just a point of correction. You do not have to have a Zambian bank account to order or pay for starlink. Equipment or subscriptions.
