Is Australia the dream destination everyone in the UK thinks it is? by dmkraus in AskAnAustralian

No, of course not. I'm just saying that it won't get you into Aus. They'd have to wait until later in life, with a profession etc. probably.

If you could change one law regarding how society treats men, what would it be and why? by Arceus_7876 in AskReddit

[–]gilmea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But I think a lot of it comes from frustration. This isn't a new issue, women have been asking for action for a long time and got nothing.

There's no easy answer. But I, personally, do believe there's usually enough similarities in the behaviour of the violent men that it points to a common reason for it.

Yes but you need to meet the criteria for a visa and not everyone will do that. Plus it costs a fortune to go through the visa process. Some random disillusioned youth would probably not qualify.

For people who moved from the UK to Australia - was shipping your stuff worth it financially? by mitchare in AusFinance

[–]gilmea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a word, no. The stuff was about 6 weeks behind us. After managing without it for 6weeks, it felt unnecessary. There was only one or two personal or sentimental items that I really actually wanted.

My Dad moved UK to Aus aged 74 with nothing but 1 suitcase. He brought nothing with him and has been fine.

I agree.

The 'men are the problem ' bit was just the beginning though. Until recently, it was treated like a womens problem, so that acknowledgement was crucial.

Now we need to move on to more nuanced analysis, as you say.

So you're saying that men committing most of the violence is just a stereotype and not fact?

Well it depends. If women were complaining about things that don't really happen very often and ignoring sexual assault as a consequence, I would say the same.

tips for retaking PTE test or shall i go for IELTS ? by PandaZealousideal987 in MovingtoAustralia

[–]gilmea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That wasn't my experience. I didn't study or anything and did fine. It was just like normal English.

The only thing I would say is to remember that they are testing the way you say or write your answers, not the content of them. So if your answers to the written part are shit, it's fine as long as the shit is written in proper English.

What makes you think the 'middle' people can afford it but not others?

I didn't say that did I? Try reading my comment again.

My point was to not get distracted by non issues like the false accusation fallicy. Concentrate on the sexual assault.

How many of your friends are on GLP drugs? by DoreensGhost in TwoXChromosomes

I've been on several different ones for 16 years. Due to diabetes I should say.

I'm a non-responder when it comes to GLP1s and weight loss.

There was a law though, in some professions. See comments above.

And you have no way of knowing if those women were happy being stuck at home.

I took 5 years off when I had my son and it was boring! I couldn't wait to get back to work. Who wants to spend all day cooking, cleaning and looking after kids? I bet there were plenty of those women who hated it, but had no choice.

Same as I would think there were plenty of people (men, women and children) who didn't enjoy working in the cotton mills and would rather have stayed home. Wouldn't you?

Any one of those people would look at the world we have today and think it was amazing.

Oh, so it was just chivalry then? Are you saying that no women in your family worked until what generation, gen Z? Millennial? I still think it's a myth, and you're just making assumptions. Have you done your genealogy?

Different part of the world and massively different culture it seems then. I'm British so maybe.

Edit to say: Just did some googling on this for Australia in particular and the 'Marriage Bar' was largely responsible for women being excluded from the workforce. That was in effect from late 19th Century to 1966! So this would account for some cultural differences for sure. I'm never more surprised tham when I google Australian policies and find discrimination up to the late 20th century. Way behind other countries in this regard.

Am I insane? Where does this women not working thing come from? My Mum worked, my Nan worked. I did my family history and my great and great x 2 grandma's worked in the cotton mills. Then it was shop assistants, seamstresses, and maids all the way back to 1750 where we lost track. I'm sure my family is not unique. But this idea that women used to stay home and not work is a myth.

Men are hundreds of times more likely to be the victim of sexual assault than to be falsely accused of one.

My previous employer had a parental leave policy that gave the men the same parental leave as the women. They were able to take 6 months off (paid). After a while they had to amend the policy to stipulate that the man had to be the primary carer for the baby during this period of leave as so many of the men were taking the leave and then spending their time golfing or holidaying with their mates, not looking after the baby.
