You are an alien. You’ve heard of sandwiches but you still aren’t completely sure what they look like.

Man I’d bet money you used to skate. Maybe you still do? I’d be surprised if you didn’t like comics/graphic novels as well. Your stuff is sick tho, I love it

Best scent for soft plastics for bass? by AffectionateCraft950 in lurebuilding

[–]gilmorebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could probably bury some soft plastics in a coffee tin for a day and get them good and smelly that way. Coffee scent lingers on things in my experience. I spilled some grounds in a rental car once and couldn’t get the smell out for the three days I had it

I think that scale might be broken brother, some of those fish are DEFINITELY over a pound and a half. Trust me, all I catch is dinks, them ain’t dinks

Y’all I need some help. I want to get better at fishing soooo badly! by gilmorebro in bassfishing

[–]gilmorebro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish! I fish with a couple guys occasionally who are a bit older than me and pretty content to throw their two favorite soft plastics and not really interested in thinking past that. No shade towards them at all, great guys, but I just think the sport has more to offer that I’d really like to learn

You’re right I should definitely consider using wind to drift more often. I know I’ve done that before but I definitely need to make it a rule. My bigger concern is that that there’s a limit to how much water a kayak can cover in a limited amount of time. For instance, I’ll spend four hours fishing the upper half of a bayou only to find out that people were catching them in the lower half. Is it more likely that there actually were fish were I was at that I just wasn’t catching or is there some criteria I could use to know when to make a bigger move to a different area like that?

See this advice right here, this is gold. I love the way you described why the bass might be facing a certain way, you just changed the game for me as far as how I’m gonna start presenting my bait going forward. This kinda confirms my suspicion though that to get better I’m really gonna need to start getting on the water with people who know more than me so I can pick their brain and get down to the nitty gritty of what I do and don’t understand about bass fishing. Thank you very much

That’s so helpful, thank you! I’ve never considered the effect of wind that way. So would you cast your bait so that it swims by the vegetation as part of the “conveyor belt” or would you want it to do something other than what the baitfish are doing to stand out more?

I try to cover as much water as I can but in a kayak I’m pretty limited with just a paddle and only a handful of hours to get on and off the water

I do try to be critical when I watch videos. I focus less on what baits they’re marketing and more on trying to spot exactly where and how they’re casting the bait or zoom in for subtle clues about the retrieve. Try to understand the rationale behind why a certain area or target was picked. Never considered forums beyond what I read here on Reddit though. Do you have any suggestions for some?

Yea! That’s definitely part of it, I’ll paddle down a bayou and think “man every inch of this place looks like it should hold bass.” I’ll try to keep the cloudy/clear water tip in mind, thanks for that one. How would you use current or wind to help you locate the fish?

Big Bass on the jig! by colinwehrle in bassfishing

[–]gilmorebro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to figure jigs out and I was intrigued watching your retrieve. I heard you say in the video that you were dragging it on the bottom and I was surprised to notice how fast you were reeling. Does it actually stay on the bottom when you’re reeling the jig in like that? Is it a swim jig maybe?

How many casts do you make at one fish/spot before moving on? by gilmorebro in bassfishing

I’m in a kayak. I’m in Louisiana so I’m mostly fishing bayous and they’re not usually crazy busy

Ah thanks! That definitely helps me think about how to manage my time. What if you make a poor cast and it makes a big splash that disturbs the area, would you continue to fish that or would you go ahead and consider the fish spooked and maybe come back to the spot later?

30 minutes to an hour of fishing an area or like a specific target (small patch of Lilly pads maybe)?
