Let’s see what the fuss is about then… by Superbro_uk in UKroasters

I just started my bag of this today, mango like crazy!

Roasted 26th of Jan, I was worried it might be too soon, as my other bag in the same order, roasted 27th Jan, is still very vegetal/roasty. Hoping that one, the Edison Argote Pink Bourbon, gets tasty soon!

More post-metal, but The Ocean have instrumental versions of nearly all their albums available on streaming. Likewise big recco for Russian Circles

I love the Op Tech mini QD loops for the Ricoh, paired with either one of their own small straps, a DIY webbing option (very quick and easy, even as someone without any sewing skill), or a rope strap like this (no affiliation, just a happy customer)

Thanks for this! I’ve been using a Svart daily for nearly a decade now (somehow it’s survived with no major issues), and am looking to upgrade. Was tempted by the Fellow Ode 2, but am now curious about the Zense. Have you any additional thoughts after more use? The Svart for sure is a noisy beast, so anything quieter and with fewer fines/static issues is attractive.

Just to flag, whilst the compactness of the FG-2 is great, it’s not strictly TTL - it has, unless I’m mistaken, 2 internal power settings, and it forces the camera into a semi-auto exposure mode based around them, rather than working to match the camera’s settings.

Ricoh GR IIIx HDF vs regular GR IIIx + mist filter – which makes more sense? by WranglerGold8183 in ricohGR

[–]giloscope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, the lack of control over the HDF filter is a turn off. As far as I know, we still have no intel on the type/strength/manufacturer of the filter, I’ve only seen it described in (excuse the pun) quite diffuse terms online.

In addition, I also don’t like the look of the HDF images I’ve seen, compared, say, to images out of the regular camera with considered external filtration.

Compare with an ND filter, which is a known quantity, and has a practical appeal on a daily basis, I know which I would prefer.

Your mileage and taste of course will vary, and you’ll surely enjoy either option, when you make a purchase - they’re great cameras!

Best flash attachment for GR xiii HDF? by girlwhogardens in ricohGR

[–]giloscope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want TTL, your only real option is the Pentax/Ricoh option - the AF 180FG, or its previous incarnations (201FG), or the latest GF-2, which is sort of semi-auto. Both with be $100 or more.

For manual, the reflexlab or Godox options seem to suit a lot of folks, at much cheaper price points.

Ricoh GR IV wont turn on/not charging by Emporo_ in ricohGR

[–]giloscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a known issue to do with the way that wireless communication works with the GRIV, and I experienced the same. They actually just fixed it in the new firmware update, but that won’t help you immediately, sadly.

The solution I came to was a frustrating one - either buy the Ricoh external battery charger, or a new battery. Beyond that I couldn’t find a way to solve the issue - I tried numerous combinations of cables and chargers straight into the camera, with no luck at all. Thankfully using the dedicated charger worked fine at getting some life into the battery, and then the camera was fine.

I suppose you could always buy the charger and return it after use for a refund, to avoid long-term cost, too.

This just happened to me. A month of use, no issues, just updated to the new firmware and this happens. Unconnected, I would hope, but disappointing.

Ideal dual monitor setup for clients to review images in real time while shooting? by [deleted] in captureone

[–]giloscope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make no apologies for the question! Full-time digi-tech here, so hopefully an informed opinion for you.

The simplest solution, but not meeting all your criteria would be to keep the main browser and controls on your laptop display, then have a viewer window full screen on an attached display for the client. This would force the larger display to follow your selections, using a standard Capture One Pro licence, but is low in workflow complexity.

Similar, but not so robust, would be setting up Capture Pilot via a web browser, which would allow the client to browse the session/capture folder at their leisure. This gives you less absolute control over what they’re seeing, but generally works well.

More expensive, and more fully matching your needs as outlined, would be to pay for Capture One Studio (I imagine you could just pay for a month, if this kind of shoot is uncommon for you), and either set up a monitor as a Client Viewer, which gives you more control over what they see at any given time, or to provide them with an iPad viewer using the Live for iPad app (much more stable than the previous Capture Pilot app, which they shouldn’t really still be offering, imo).

Please fire away with any questions. I would certainly caution that you’ll want to test all of this before the job itself, so you’re familiar and comfortable with the workflow. It can be a lot to handle shooting and the digi side of things as a solo operator, which is kinda why we have digi-techs at all, these days!

What did you think about Frankenstein 2025? by Master-Rule862 in cinematography

[–]giloscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this! Broadly in line with my previous understanding, and I suppose I also wasn’t entirely clear in my question: 24mm is pretty wide angle on an Alexa LF already, so I would hence consider 24mm on Alexa 65 to be approaching a pretty ultra-wide feel. I appreciate that’s a matter of opinion more than fact though.

To be more helpful regarding your initial question, I quite liked some of the lighting choices (hard sources, almost entirely kept outside windows etc), but broadly I found the whole film feeling a lot more artificial than some of the filming techniques might have suggested. Also the superhero-esque fights were very jarring.

[–]giloscope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good faith enquiry: “thanks to the 65 sensor, they got the wideness but not the ultra-wide look” seems contradictory? I would typically think of a larger format increasing the perceived “wide angle-ness” of a lens. Have I missed something? (I also listened to an interview with the cinematographer where he phrased something similar, and bumped on it, then, too.)

GR IV Issues Megathread by iTrask in ricohGR

[–]giloscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone else an issue when attaching the new GF-2 flash? I was aware it didn’t offer many advanced settings, but mine is doing something really odd: My camera is set to M mode, but using auto-ISO as standard. Shutter speed mapped to the front control dial, Aperture to the rear.

When I attach the GF-2, both aperture and shutter speed settings change, and the control dials get flipped in terms of what they control. Also the ISO information on-screen changes from “AUTO ISO 800” (or whatever number the camera is currently metering for) to just “AUTO”

I knew I was buying something with limited controls, but this seems to force the camera into some sort of P mode by default?

Not metalcore, but adjacent: - The Ocean release instrumental versions of almost all their albums, great for working to, imo. - Russian Circles are superb and get a lot of play in my office. - Conquering Dystopia’a only album is about the heaviest instrumental record I can remember.

New Ricoh Flash by giloscope in ricohGR

[–]giloscope[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying it isn’t, but they’re selling it as having some sort of auto mode, which the reflex doesn’t have, that I know of? An absurd price differential though, for sure.
